Since he has a 1996 his temp gauge should read dead in the middle. It sounds like you have air bubble in your system thats one reason why the gauge will jump

Try to avoid any auto part store. Two years ago my original alternator went out. I had to go to pepboys. At least at pepboys it has a lifetime warranty, but in those 2 years I already went through 3 pepboys alternators.
I do not have a blown headgasket. I kept on adding fluid through the over flow bottle which I know is wrong. But the gauge did go lower. The only issue I have now is the water pump leaking. Even though its less than 3 months old. Good luck maybe you have air trapped in the system?
