i went out after dinner to grab a coffee and took the 97 way out back in tarpon springs to anclotte road where there is no civilization and nothing but woods on each side of the road. i was holding my left foot on the brake, my right on the gas, and i was holding it around 1,400 rpm, any more than that and my rear tires would start to break loose. so what i tried about a dozen times was keeping the rpm's at 1,400, then i would imagine a green tree and smash the gas with my foot still on the brake lightly for the first second or two then let off the brake and suprisingly i was getting very very little tire spin but the car would leave hard, i tried a few runs manually shifting around 5800 rpm and seemed to scream down the road, i also tried it in drive with o.d off and i cant tell which was better both ways the car seemed to drive and shift on its own about the same as manually shifting. if i am getting almost no tire spin launching the way i am, i would think as long as my reaction time to the light is good, i would think those tires on compound should hook pretty decent. i want to go to the track as is, but i do want to get a pair of drag radials for the track i really want to be able to take off with no tire spin or next to none anyway. well, it was a fun coffee run anyway i never really hammer on my car because of how thickly settled my area is, but going back there tonight near the coast line and beating the piss out of it was fun!! i was even doing it with 9 air suspension compressors in my trunk lol maybe thats whay i wasnt spinning much hahaha!!!

Your reaction time has nothing to do with your ET, don't worry about it. And don't wait for the green light, leave on the last yellow. Even then, with a Mark VIII, you'll be late.

Turn off the TC and OD.

Jamie, it feels great to floor it every once & a while. I too live in a VERY... ummm, OVER-populated area! On Saturday night I raced a manual '99 Mustang GT out of the hole! We raced twice. I had not raced in over 6 years! 1st gear I'd stick by him, 2nd gear I'd still be next to him for the first 3-4 seconds then he would slowly start pulling away but both times he let off the gas once we would reach 85 - 90 mph. I need to swap spark plug wires/plugs ASAP! I still have the OEM wires on my car!!! I have a feeling that will make a HUGE diferrence!

PS:Hey man I owe Saturday night's adrenaline rush to you!!! Hehehe... Otherwise my car would still be sitting @ 0 MPH!

i have heard that "power braking" causes the computer to pull timing out . my car hits harder if i flash the converter . if you go to the strip you should have better grip any way. my 96 burns the tires on the street and generally hooks pretty well on the track.also , it is correct about leaving on yellow you might even try the second to last yellow ,if that works that will help your reaction time ,thats where races are won and lost. check on that timing thing thou.

The Mark VIII is the only car that I haven't had better success at power braking versus flashing the converter. With my setup on the Toyo Drag radials and 4.30's I do power brake just because it feels like the right thing to do but honestly I can't say I get better results than when I just flash the converter.

You are kinda right. First gen cars command a tip in spark advance when you initially hit the throttle. They add that ammount to whatever the table timing is for the current load. It times out though. So say you have a 93 and its sitting there at 18* timing and you go load it up to 1500 RPM the car will then go to 39* timing to launch itself. But if you sit there for a couple seconds then the car times out and stops doing the tip in advance.
I dont know what the cut off is but if you keep it at 1200 or below then it wont time it out cause it wont command the tip in advance cause you are not in the "window" the cars tune allows that to operate at.

Second gen cars its a bit different and would behove you to sit on the launch a little cause second gens command a slight retard of timing at tip in. I think its 2* but would have to check my files.

Anywho, thats great Jamie! I cant load to 1100 and launch at WOT or all I get is tire smoke. The way you said you had traction issues I am quite suprised you can launch at 1400 and still mat the pedal without having massive wheel spin. Thats pretty cool mang.

IDK what kind of phone you have but the Droid has some fairly nice Dyno Apps. I use one that has been fairly close to the actual times I pull at the track. shows me 13.9-14.1 times and consistant 2.1x 60' times. According to the app my car does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. I still need to use the app again and try better launches cause when I used it I always launched at 800 RPM with no load at all so I was still in an idle loop which sucks.

well depending how :q:q:q:qty my day is wed at work, i might grab my buddy matt and go to the track, i dont know how much it is to run the car but i know its 12 bucks just to get in to watch. they are expecting high rain chances wed, thurs and fri, as i am typing this is just went from dead calm outside to massive downpour! depending how much it is to run the car, i will go to the website and see, i might take it this wed, depending on the weather too, i'll bring my camera and have matt record my runs or maybe my wife will come too, she loves that kind of crap! she could probably run the car down the track better than me lol!

LaserSVT, what dyno apps are you running on your Droid? I just sold my Iphone 3G and got a Droid X...

on both my G-tec and the track my 97 has better 60 foot times when power breaking
BUT over all the car will run a better 1/4 if I i flash the converter just my .02
you will have to experiment at the track

oh i gotcha, well when i go, i will try both and see if it makes any difference. i'm sure my first few runs are gonna make me look like a jackass!!

Nah, you'll be fine. ;)

On my '93, I found with the stock converter I got better ETs launching from idle and with the high stall converter I got better ETs stalling the converter. But it takes lots of practice to be consistent at it.

With a Gen2, you have the option to get a 2-step device from MSD that works with the COP ignition that will allow you to launch at a preset rpm.

You might be surprised....my sister in law is feared at the track.

We all have heard of the Tiffany mod.

Have her do it!!!!
