Kenwood eXcelon DNX9980HD install

No problem, I deleted the quote of yours from my post - allowing you to edit yours... which it looks like you did ;)

Got the passenger side C-Pillar pulled out to find the retained accessory power (RAP) wire... I see a black bundled taped up wire harness.

Do I open that up/un-tape it, and find what color wire in there for the RAP?
(I've read many threads, it was mentioned more than once that the RAP wire is located there, but not specifically what the wire color was or where it's at other than in the passenger C-Pillar).

Can anyone provide more info on this please?

Great, thanks. I found a detailed thread, from you:
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=46760&highlight=retained

This one mentions gray/violet:
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showpost.php?p=434353&postcount=9

I don't understand these connector names or where they are...

Question#1: Is C920 the one behind the C-Pillar and above the rear deck that I would need to tap into (gray/violet wire)?

(Too bad we all haven't found an exact one somewhere in the front dash or kick panel area that was easier to get to).

This is what you stated before: The wire color is gray with a violet stripe. I tapped it at connector C501, which is to the driver's door module.

Question#2: Where is this C501?

That's all for gen II. I'll have to look it up to see if it's the same for gen I.

C501 (gen II anyway) is behind the door trim of the driver's door.

The RAP wire almost certainly has to run through the dash somewhere, since it goes to the driver's door.

The in-dash jacks came in today. I used a 3/4" spade drill bit for the mini-stereo jack, and 13/16" for the two USB/IPOD jacks (manual says 7/8" but I found the 13/16" was smaller and a better fit). The mini-stereo jack had to be mounted a touch higher because the mounting nut was larger and on the rear. The USB jack mounting nuts are on the front face and had to be a touch lower. Placement in the glovebox still allows the Lincoln owners manual etc to fit and other larger items.

Quick question. What is that Valet button? I've never seen it in any LS before.

I didn't get a valet key with mine now that you mention it (bought the car used), had to look up the answer to your question.

I like this install super clean.

Sweet install. Impressive work.
Thanks guys! I am starting to have fun with the project now. Time to start soldering etc...

Gen I wiring is even more different from gen II wiring than I thought. To make matters worse, the gen I diagrams that I have don't describe many of the signals at all. My best wild guess is that you need the gray/orange wire or the blue/black wire going to the moon roof.

Thanks for looking. Any chance there is RAP in the dome light area where the sunroof switches are?

Your install is coming along nicely. Very good job in the glove compartment! Cant wait to see the finished product.

Hit a couple snags...

1) The 8 pin Scosche harness connector won't go on the cars harness plug all the way... it sits back about 1/4" - doesn't get to the point to click and latch. I have another 8 pin connector without the RCA plugs and it does the same. Pins look fine, no burrs or rough edges anywhere. (When I plug the car harness plug back into the stock headunit it still fits perfect, so no damage done to the car harness).

I have these:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item...ut[query_id]=6803576&SearchClickout[Ignore]=1
(Two different brand 8-pin connectors aren't connecting)

2) The 20 pin square plug for the steering wheel control is loose, doesn't click in... it seats all the way but just won't stay on.
I could tape it on... but I don't like loose connections.

Edit: Going to Best Buy and try a different brand harness: Metra 70-5519

Looking at the Metra Axxess ASWC, I noticed a couple things wrong for Gen1...

1) Their website www.axxessinterface.com for a Lincoln LS 2002 3.9 says "Control Wire 1 Wire Color" White/Black goes to Pin14, and the manual in the box says that too.

2) The Documents wiring instructions link says White/Green goes to Pin14... see link below.

What is the correct wire color for Pin14 of the 20pin connector?

Anyone know of a 20-pin harness connector that fits correctly? (Mine won't stay on)
I couldn't find another one online, other than the one I listed above.

Connect the White/Green wire of the ASWC to pin 14 of the vehicle.
Below is a picture of what the connector in the vehicle looks like, this is the pin view of the connector in the vehicle:

The Metra 70-5519 8-Pin and the 16-Pin works fine.
The Impulse FD-6000 Harness kit does not work for 8-Pin (but has the 20-Pin).
The Scosche FDK13B / FDK13 Harness kit does not work for 8-Pin.

I will tape the 20-Pin on, or insert something into the plastic release clip, so it stays snug.
I removed both pins, and put one back in at Pin#14.

There is only a White/Green wire on the Metra Axxess ASWC (there is no White/Black wire).
1) Connect the Black wire of the ASWC to ground. You may use the same grounding point as the aftermarket radio.
2) Connect the Red wire of the ASWC to a 12 volt accessory wire, one that turns on and off with the ignition key.
3) Connect the White/Green wire of the ASWC to pin 14 of the vehicle.

BestBuy doesn't know where the RAP wire is either.
BestBuy said there is no 20-Pin harness connector, just undo the cars 20-Pin harness and hard wire it.
(I'll use the 20-Pin connector from Impulse FD-6000 instead).

Personally, i always prefer to hard wire steering wheel controls directly into the factory harness. dont cut the wires from the harness, just tap into them and solder the wires a couple of inches back from the harness. since steering wheel interfaces work off of different resistances, you want to minimize the resistance you add into the circuit.

BestBuy doesn't know where the RAP wire is either.

you already know where the RAP wire is, why keep looking?

Thought I'd see if they knew of one in the dash or kick panel area up front. Decided not to hack into the C-Pillar and run a wire back, wasn't much room to work back there. Went on to other things. Using Run/Acc power wire for now to get it installed. Might leave it that way.

Might leave it that way.

trust me, you'll be glad you did, its really only about 15 mins more work and just a nice feature to have.

also noticed that you where planning to use the KCA-IP302 for the ipod, is the aux you ran into the glove box for one of the ipod cables extra connectors? if so, are you going to do the same for the video connector as well?

I kinda want that RAP, I know what you mean... may get to that (I hope I do). Joegr thought it was one of two colored wires, but not for sure. That's one reason I dropped it. Do you know which color it is in the C-Pillar for the sunroof?

Now that I have the main 3 harnesses wired, and other things done, I could tackle running the RAP wire now.

There are 3 AVI in ports, 1 AVI out. I am running 1 AVI via KCA-IP302 and it uses one of the USB ports (and has mini-stereo jack out for audio, and mini jack for video on that cable). This Kenwood HU uses IPOD audio & video input via miniplugs at back of the HU. (There are two more AVI inputs via 3 RCA jacks each, but not for IPOD use). I ran the KCA-IP302 to the glovebox and plugged the USB into one USB jack with the sound and video miniplug jacks going out and back to the HU (need to seal the hole now). The other USB port will be for mem stick/drive and the like, or another iPod (power and audio). Plus a mini-stereo jack for a MP3 player or whatnot (that has headphone out) in the glovebox going back to RCA jacks at another AVI input.

I just popped out the C-Pillar, took a picture... looking at it now... here's what I see back there.

Joegr mentioned: My best wild guess is that you need the gray/orange wire or the blue/black wire going to the moon roof.

They are both there, I pulled them off to the right in this photo... now the question is which one?

Edit: Looks like you signed off. I'll run a wire from the stereo console area back to the C-Pillar now. I will hook it into the C-Pillar and stereo harness later... at least it will be ran. I don't want to put a t-tap or quicksplice, and don't want to cut into both wires trying to figure out which one to use. Don't want to solder back there either, no room for error... a t-tap or quicksplice might be needed anyway... what did you and joegr use for the connection?
