Kenwood eXcelon DNX9980HD install

I'm attempting to do some wiring right now and am a little confused. The harness for the HU has a long black wire that says its the ground wire and should go to the car chassis. The harness I purchased that connects to the actual car has a black/white wire that also says it is a ground. Do I connect these two?

I am also totally confused on the steering wheel control harness. So many wires and I don't know where to go with them.

SWC Connections

1) Connect the Black wire of the ASWC to ground. You may use the same grounding
point as the aftermarket radio.

2) Connect the Red wire of the ASWC to a 12 volt accessory wire, one that turns on and
off with the ignition key.

3) Connect the White/Green wire of the ASWC to pin 14 of the vehicle. Below is a
picture of what the connector in the vehicle looks like:

This is the pin view of the connector in the vehicle

4) All other wires on the ASWC please tape up, they will not be used.

Can anybody contact LDM? His pm box is full and I need to ask him some questions.

Ok, I got all of the ASWC steering wheel harness wired except for the white/green wire. I'm still not entirely sure where to put it. Does it literally go into the the connector already attached to the car?

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I've never delt with wiring before except the angel eyes and that was easy stuff.

^ There was your answer.. Yes, you solder it on to the vehicle side of the connector.

On the harness that came with the HU I still have the "antenna control wire" and the "mute control wire" not wired to anything. Where would they go?

I am confused as to what these get wired to...

I have the harnesses, just don't know what to wires to connect them to. I can't tell in that big jumbled mess.

I know that I need to take out one of the wires on the harness pictured to the right.

Also, LDM, where is the smaller harness that came in the package with the Metra 70-5519? I don't see it.

Quit for the night. The radio part of the HU at least works so I will worry about it later.

NO, you are running the wire from the ASWC to the CAR SIDE of the large connector..

The smaller harness is the white plug on the left for 8-pin sub/center amps.

The White/Green wire of ASWC goes to Pin#14 of the 20-Pin plug.
I removed both pins, and put one back in at Pin#14 (blue wire in my photos) and connected it to White/Green of ASWC.
(I used the 20-Pin connector from Impulse FD-6000 instead).

There is only a White/Green wire on the Metra Axxess ASWC (there is no White/Black wire).
1) Connect the Black wire of the ASWC to ground. You may use the same grounding point as the aftermarket radio.
2) Connect the Red wire of the ASWC to a 12 volt accessory wire, one that turns on and off with the ignition key.
Connect the Red ASWC wire AND the Power wire of the Radio to your power source (Run/ACC or RAP wire). That way they both stay on together and you have steering wheel volume controls when the engine isn't running.
3) Connect the White/Green wire of the ASWC to pin 14 of the vehicle.

I didn't use the attenna control wire, I just used tape to cover the end up.

I don't think you hook up the mute wire, try it unhooked, ensure ASWC installed, press Mute on the steering wheel and see if the HU goes to ATT (i.e. Attenuation, it should be almost completely muted). There may be an ATT on the HU also.

If the ASWC isn't working correctly, you may have to program it. I summarized how to do this for the Gen1 LS here:

Always admire fancy audio install like this ... not much of an audio man myself, I've only done a couple
and my last one was in a work truck, a simple install of a regular Kenwood head unit, fresh speakers
and a little pre-amped Bazooka tube behind the seat.

Looking forward to putting a nice system in my LS someday. Nice to see all the expert audio help here on LVC.

Good luck on finishing the job.

I just finished my double DIN install and everything went well except the damn RAP wire. I tapped into the blue/black wire in the C-pillar and used a reversing polarity relay setup and the radio stays on even after I open the door. I used the relay instructions in this thread. Then I looked up a relay setup on the12volt.com and there is a way to use the (+) or (-) door trigger to accomplish a RAP scenario, it used 3 relays to create a 'latch'. I may try that later.

As the retained power signal is in the factory HU you will need something like this:

It's a Directed Electronics 55000. I have NO idea where you can find this, or a similar device. I needed it to keep my amp powered until I opened a door or the 10 minutes expired. I tapped into one of the speaker wires. It may be adaptable to one of the window or sunroof leads UNLESS the HU controls them too.

...s. It may be adaptable to one of the window or sunroof leads UNLESS the HU controls them too.

The REM controls the moon roof and passenger windows. The DDM controls the driver's window. Getting to RAP on gen II is fairly easy, apparently it is more difficult for gen I.

This has me wondering now.....seems it's a hit or miss at the moment on the RAPS....I've started my harness and now waiting for weather and time to get my new HU in....getting sick of the factory one now since the display stopped working. I have the wiring waiting for the RAPS to connect to the blue/black, wish I was that far to help you out.

It's a nice option......but I would trade it to retain the volume increase/decrease with speed.

Cuz it's kewl man...

I connected mine just like LDM said he did in this thread but it didnt work for me. I open the door and the HU stays on and the steering wheel stays out until I unhook a wire (either the RAP or accessory) on the relay and then the HU goes off and steering wheel retracts. I also tried the Gray/Orange wire in the C-pillar and when I open the door the radio stays on and the sunroof opens. I wish there was a clear cut way of retaining RAP because I really like that feature. Let us know how yours turns out.

I don't understand why anyone fights so hard to retain RAP

Because RAP is cool...

Hite337, since you are getting different results w/RAP:

Did you try it without a relay? (Blue/Black wire at the C-Pillar directly to the Red "Ignition Wire/ACC" from the HU).

Yes. The radio turns off when I turn the key off and the radio comes back on and the steering wheel goes into position when I open the door.
