Kenwood eXcelon DNX9980HD install

there are too many things fixed on my car with epoxy, all seem to be coming common things. message center buttons, traction control button, and the headliner below the third brake.

You're not alone there. You forgot the e-brake button.

Finished product, started playing with it and couldn't get out of the car.
(Low lighting in the garage, kinda fuzzy camera phone pics, but this is what it looks like installed).

congrats bud, looks killer in there, dont forget to get in there and get all of the sound settings right, especially the crossovers, those eXcelons's sound amazing!

funny enough, i haven't had that fall through....YET! I'm sure its only a matter of time. since my trac button was the last to break, the thought of putting some to reinforce the unbroken e-brake button had crossed through my mind, but i didnt mix enough the first time and laziness got the best of me and i didn't feel like remixing and waiting much more.

Yes, I have added epoxy to a few things that haven't broken yet. (If it broke and I had to fix it on one LS, I went ahead and reinforced the same part on the other LS.)

Thats awesome LDM! I think you should put the specifics of your install on paper, just incase you need it for an install in another LS in the future :D.

Wow!! I was impressed with all the effort you put in. I will definitely use this write up to work on mine when I get all the gadgets I need. Looks and sounds bad ass.

Today I added a Garmin Mechanic with ecoRoute HD to my Kenwood eXcelon DNX9980HD:
http://gbr.garmin.com/ecoroute-hd/how-it-works/how_ecoroute_hd_works.html

I also added a Tune Trapper Hidden Car AM FM Stereo Radio Antenna With End Cable in the passenger side A-Pillar:
Amazon.com: Tune Trapper Hidden Car AM FM Stereo Radio Antenna With End Cable: Car Electronics

Both seem to work fine.

I got the ecoRoute mainly as a birthday gift. It should show me codes on the Kenwood screen. I like seeing the actual coolant temp and battery voltage etc. You can change the display to show other guages instead of these (I changed one in the pic below). It transmits the info wirelessly via Bluetooth to the Kenwood HU. It's jammed/wedged under the dash steering column, as you can see in the last picture. It's a tight fit, it's not going anywhere.

The ecoroute looks really cool. Without doing too much searching, will it work (for the most part) with any aftermarket head unit that supports bluetooth?

No it only works with garmin devices.

Should work with most garmin navigation equipped headunits aka kenwoods.

Test above completed, results are as you stated.

I hooked up the Relay in the car:
86-Relay from Blue/Black wire in C-Pillar Moonroof harness.
30-Relay to HU Run/ACC wire has nothing when the car is off, 12V when the Ignition Key is at ACC or Run, 12V when the Key is off and/or the Key is removed, and no voltage when the door is opened.

Thank you 1LoudLS and Joegr for this help! It's a RAP!

Now to tuck in the cables, install the HU in the dash, button everything up behind the glovebox and put everything back to normal. It's time to actually install the HU!

Thanks Guys! Hopefully everything's gonna be all right!

Okay, so this is a little late...

I now see how those two wires from the REM to the moon roof work. They're two logic inputs basically. If both are low (grounded) the moon roof is powered. If both are high (+12V), the moon roof is not powered. If the first one is high and the second low, then the moon roof closes (when you put the key in the door and hold it in the lock position for a while). If the first one is low and the second one is high, then the moon roof opens (when you hold unlock for a while).

Anyway, this means that depending on which wire you picked, your radio will power up briefly when you use the key or remote to roll all the windows up or down. I don't see this as a problem, as opposed to not having the RAP feature.

Thanks for the info/follow-up.

I just tried the remote and rolled everything down/open... the radio stayed off.

If I use the actual key the radio does come on when I open everything or close everything when I hold the key in the far lock or unlock positions. As soon as I center the key (i.e. ready to remove the key) the radio goes off. That works for me. It's great to have the RAP feature, I use it all the time now.

It works with a couple other headunits but not the one i have.

I have gotten a couple comments/PM's about the cost of the Kenwood DNX9980HD HU.

I bought it for $910 a couple months ago from an eBay seller w/free shipping and no tax: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280841099009

It's $860 now (no tax, free shipping). It was quick shipping too.

I was looking for one that was cheaper, but by the time you add the Bluetooth module, a HD Radio module, a Satellite module, and others items and pay the cost of Tax... this was actually cheaper in the long run (everything is built-in, no modules to buy) than a $550-$600 unit in a retail store, and it has more features and a large screen w/2 iPod controls, USB and Pandora, ecoRoute etc.. (I bought the Sirius radio seperately, but the radio has the module already built in).

Sonicelectronix, Crutchfiled and Amazon list it for higher prices.

Kenwood is releasing their new line in April supposedly, so prices are dropping. The new one will be DNX9990HD at nearly $1399 or more.

The Kenwood DNX9980HD is a great unit, impressive actually. $860 shipped.
This is currently Kenwood's high-end flagship top of the line model.

LDM when you connected the Axxess ASWC I see you used the White/green wire where or what does that plug into.

Connect the White/Green wire of the ASWC to pin 14 of the vehicle (20 pin connector).
I used the Impulse FD-6000 Harness kit that has the 20-Pin connector, it comes with 2 wires attached to pins, and I removed them both and put one back in at Pin#14.

The other option is to hardwire it to the wire of Pin#14 of the 20 Pin car connector without using a harness kit plug (some people prefer that method).

Connect the Red ASWC wire AND the Power wire of the Radio to your power source (Run/ACC or RAP wire). That way they both stay on together and you have steering wheel volume controls when the engine isn't running.

Oh thank you so much. I was going crazy trying to figure out what that went to. Should have known that the diagram was wrong. Thanks again man.
