So from time to time ill be dropping in some images and stuff that I have done with audio in my mark viii. The past 2 days was spent sealing the trunk. I thought for sure this would be a 2-3 hours project. I WAS WRONG. It took 2 days to complete the project. The first day was about 9 hours and the second day was about another 6-8 hours. Of course you pros out there i'm sure could of knocked it out in quarter of the time. So far the results are well worth it. In addition to sealing the trunk we also reran a lot of the wire harnesses as well. For the time being I tossed the carpet back in it however I plan on removing it completely and just custom fitting some nice carpet to the flat sections of the trunk and leave the sides exposed. I also plan on removing the spare tire cover and hopefully finding a nice piece of smoked plexi to replace it with as i keep my amps down in there. Soon ill be doing the inside of the car next in the same manner as the trunk was done. I am very excited to hear the results. Most of the exhaust sound is gone already and a lot of road noise has been removed. On top of that the bass gains the quality of the bass and the over all sound of the car also improved tremendously.

The things we do to sound good :) I will see about getting some pictures of the 0awg upgrades I have done to the car including the big 3 upgrade. When i seal in the car ill be able to get some shots of the speakers and how they were mounted and the "custom" brackets i used to make them fit where they are. Some of the images are taken with a nice cam and some are a phone. sorry about the quality but it does get the picture across.

I oh a big thanks to my good friend Tim

Great job laying all that down! Not an easy task. Never used that brand before. How much it run to do the trunk?

I plan to do something similar in my LS in the future when i overhaul my system.

are you gonna reinstall the trunk carpet and trunk lid carpet? the job looks great but i hope you arent gonna leave it exposed!

actually, bass or not, its worth doing that because it cuts out the road noise and makes music sound much tighter and better. my trunk lid is done, but not inside the trunk, maybe i should copy this too because i am changing my sub configuration and i know i already have rattles with my 2 ten inch JL's

yeah my jl w3 with j500 is starting to make some rattles. and it will only get worse with time. how much did this run i know dynamat used to be sky hi

the main carpet is back in the trunk. i did not restore the carpet to the lid. i like opening it up and having it right there plus i have no clue where any of the holes are even if i wanted to put it back :) i dont store much in the trunk and i don't see it getting ruined.

as for the cost of it. it was about 90 dollars shipped for 50 square feet. the brand is Fatmat. to me its one of the best out there. the version i used is rattle trap. its 80mil thick.

bad97lsc why would you not leave it exposed?

Looks funky that way. That's my guess.

Nice work though! :) How much did you use up, and what kind amoney did all that run?

Do a BIG 3 write-up for us! PLEASE! Include a list of parts and wire run length.

I give up searching "The big 3". I dont know what that is but see people mention it here all the time. I didnt want to look stupid so I use the search and come up with a crap load of threads with people just saying the big 3 with no explination as to what it is. Anyone care to enlighten me or link me to the proper thread?

No Problem.

Definition: the "Big Three" upgrade means improving the current capacity of three cables: 1) alternator positive to battery positive, 2) battery negative to chassis, and 3) engine ground to chassis. Some people replace the factory wiring; others add additional cables to the factory wiring.

Mike ive already done the big three upgrade. When i get some pictures snapped up of it ill see if i can get guestimates of the wire length. pretty much the only parts there were need was the runs of 0awg wire and rings on the end of em.

We used the entire 50 square foot roll. there was maybe a half foot left over if you were to peice all the scraps and crap together

Just out of curiosity what dose all that weigh? Approximately?

I have heard dynamat is the best for sound proofing. Have you ever used that?

Good job though, I would like to do that in the future to my Mark. Even though I don't have a stereo system, it would be mostly for reducing road noise and such.

dynamat is overpriced.

fatmat gives same results for less funds.

I will remember that. I know when I was searching for dynamat just out of curiosity, it was giving me crazy high prices. That's why I put it on the "to-do list"

I wanna do my doors and the inside of the cabin, should be around $450 if it costs $90 to do the trunk. I am also interested in the weight also.

Its used a lot when doing muscle car restorations to reduce cabin noise and insulate for heat and ac but be advised it does add weight to the vehicle.

Dont think its really necessary with the mark. unless you want an extra quiet interior.

Ah, thanks. Funny cause I did all that! Didnt go insaine but I have two 4awg wires from the block and timing cover to the chasis and another 4awg (with the factory 10awg) ground from the chasis to the battery and then 4awg from the alt to the battery. Kinda figured thats what it was but wasnt sure.

And in the past I have used DEIs VG2 mat and really liked it but it takes a heat gun to form. I have also used the spray on Lizard Skin and that stuff is killer!

Noise

I'd be interested in how much it would reduce exhaust noise. I've got the LMS system with 3" high flow cats, double x-pipes, and LMS mufflers, hung in multiple places with the pipes tied together if a few places to reduce drone, but the thing is brutally loud at specific RPM's.
I wonder if doing the mats in the trunk and against the rear of the back seat would knock it down much.

Fatmat has won more trouphies and has been shown to be better then dynamat. it is also way less expensive as well. that 50 squar foot was heavy as hell. if your looking to go fast i wouldnt put it in. it was probably another 50-80 lbs that was added to the car. as for what it did to the exhaust i dont even hear it at all anymore. i would only suggest doing it if one as stated you want a super quite mark viii ride on the inside. you dont want a ton of rattle either. or you have excessive drone from the exhaust. i personally love the way the audio system sounds now. the bass is way cleaner tighter and deeper then it was before. even at lower volumes you can tell there is a quality increase all around. i still plan on sealing the inside as well just need to get another 50 foot roll of it. i figure with my fat ass i can lose the weight i added from the sound proofing and break even :)

Tripp, seriously, you done a real good job and it's nice and neat. I would find the holes and put the carpet back on the lid. Not only does it help even more to dampen noise but it would look much better. Right now it reminds me of a house that has been framed and standing there with only the outer insulation. It's like "when are they going to put the brick on"

Look at your pics without to help locate the holes. Shouldn't take long to locate most of them. Just giving an opinion but again, you done a very very good job, especially with the detail and time you invested.
