Overheated All of a sudden

This is really weird. Today, was an off day for me, and I've bee driving the Mark around. Prior to day, I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Everything seemed normal. On the way back home, I decided to stop and pick up lunch at a burger spot, and I pulled into the drive-thru. While sitting there, I noticed my AC started to get warm, so I lower the temp a bit. Then the info center says "check engine temp". I start to take notice now. My temp gauge shot up, and coolant start pouring out of the reservoir. I pulled over into the parking lot, and waited an hour, and went home.

When I got home I changed the thermostat thinking I possibly had a malfunction or something. Filled everything back up, burped the system and and let the car idle. I noticed that the temp gauge started to rise again, I also noticed that my fan never came on at all, so I'm thinking VLCM. I had an extra one in my stash, so I swapped it out. My AC also don't cool anymore, so I'm going to recharge the AC. Isn't the fan supposed to kick on when the AC is engaged?
 
If the AC needs charged there is a pressure switch that keeps the compressor from kicking on if the line pressure is too low.

Either way the fan should run just off temp...
 
Fan is dead or its connector is bad. This is the time of year when those issues crop up.
 
I'm going to change the fan next. I have an extra one from my parts car and see if that helps. If the fan quits working, is there some sort of fail safe that prevents the AC compressor for kicking on?
 
Ya, no air flow over the condenser and the system becomes inefficient. That then causes high side pressure to rise and the a/c will shut off. My bet is a dead fan. My SHO did the exact same thing you are describing.
 
I would bet the fan also, on 2 of my conti's the fan motor got excessively hot and melted the plastic housing that covers the fan motor and the shaft goes thru. Then the fan tilted uncentered and stopped working. But all started at the pigtail to the motor.
 
So, I noticed that you didn't list what year car this in.....don't you have like 53 of them?

Anyway, at some point, the fans went from 2-speed fans to variable-speed fans. I think they changed starting in 97, but can't remember. I don't think they interchange, but I can't remember for sure.
I don't know what year your parts-car fan is from either.....just something to remember....
 
Well it was definately the fan. Thank goodness for parts cars. The fan from my 94 bolted right in. incidentally I only have two gen 2's now, and one parts car. I thinned out a bit.
 
alright. i have a similar issue, and before i just chuck a vrcm at it, whats the best way to test the fan?

pull it off and apply 12 volts?
 
Be sure to check the connector on the fan, if it moves more than normal, check it for cracks inside near the terminal and at the base of the connector. Check the harness for cracks near the connector and for wire shielding pealing off inside the loom. It's worth the small amount of time for inspection, mine shorted and caught fire. I experienced the same thing GMAN did sitting at a stoplight so I shut it off and popped the hood, nice little flame and a little pile of black goop laying on the ground. I got it put out fast enough that it only burnt the harness connector and the fan motor connector. Replaced the connector with new wiring and a like new connector, went through 4 JY fans before I found a good one. All hooked up and operates perfect now, but I had to change my undies that day!
 
alright. fan works. plug looks to be in pretty good condition. no indication of excess heat. wiring looks good. no burnt plastic etc.

turned the car and ac on, only have .6 volts coming out of the fan plug. all under hood fuses checked out good.
vrcm time?

Looking that way. It's only about to get hotter outside too. Seems like someone on here had one for sale but maybe it was someone looking for one.

yeah i saw a few on the auction site.
so any 93-95 vrcm will work correct? or are they more specific than that?

No problem. If I hadn't exploded my 94 and burned everything on the front end, I would have just sent you one for shipping but it kinda melted lol.
