I copied this from my previous thread, just kinda thought it would be best to make a new thread since now I actually have the thing.

Well.... I got the chip today. Took 2 weeks. Anyhow, I noticed a few things, the shift points are definately later, which is what I asked for to go with the 3:73s. I have the t-loc and 3:73s sitting on my bench but wanted to get the chip before I threw them in. So once the gears are in it should shift about spot on. This morning, the car seems to have adapted a bit and the light throttle shifting seems to be better. Second thing is the shifts are firmer. Now, I have a j-mod done on this car and you dont feel as much of the "firmness" unless you are in the throttle a little. Now you feel it every shift. I don't know if this is a result of more power, or increased trans line pressure. Probably pressure. All in all, my first impressions are meh. I realize this was a supporting mod for the gears, so I can't make my full determination until they are in. As far as increased power goes, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Launch is exaclty the same as before. It feels like it pulls a bit harder in the mid to higher RPMS, which is I guess would be the case with advanced timing. Not sure I feel that the 325 was worth it, but again, I can't make a full opinion until the gears are installed. I am going to try running higher octane fuel once this tank of regular runs out, and reset the PCM, see if that makes a difference. Also Dennis said he would include a multi position switch -- he didnt. He also said he was going to send it 2-day air -- he didnt, it came ground.

Recommended to run premium gas for these engines.

Not sure if it's like the N* or not, but I wouldn't bet on the chip upgrading the performance if you fill it with premium gas.

And if that's the performance difference you 'feel', I would say the 325 could have gone into a suspension upgrade instead.
 
Well... the first thing you should do, in my opinion is make the computer start thinking its faster. Not thinkg like a grand marques, make it think more like a mustang. One of the biggest thing that these chips do is get rid of the stock retarded timing on shifts. Also... in my understanding, the chip advances the timing something like 10* over stock, and the computer can add or remove timing if it sees detonation. That is why I was asking if anyone with experience with these chips could tell me if running a higher octane gas is going to get me a little more power because it can run more advance, more often.

I have always ran 93 so I can't tell you if running 93 made a difference. I know for a fact that it made a HUGE difference on my Mustang GT, but I haven't tested that on this car.

On the mustang if I used anything but 93 after the tune my engine would ping. If I filled up with 93 the ping would go away.
 
these car recommend 91 from factory it tells you on the gauge and also on the fuel door and i know that you know that also man run that gas out fill it with the good stuff and run it a bit give it some time like couple hundred miles or so and then you will notice it better acc. when i had the chip in my car before it took about that long at first i notice the shifting but then i notice it starting to pull harder all the way around it was a beast now im ready for another one so will see keep us posted lol.
 
More than likely the car is pulling any timing added by the chip because of the 89 octane. The knock sensors pick up inaudible pinging before it is a problem.

I actually have seen regular gas vehicles tuned for premium gas get better performance and economy.
 
Gasoline grade has to do with compression ratio. Run the wrong gas and you can ping. If you ping, there goes your oil pump. Nuff said. Run what is suppose to be ran.
 
In a stock mark viii, if you ping or "detonate" it just pulls timing. I'm not going to ruin my oil pump. I have ran 89 in all my cars. My 95 SHO, my 3 Mark VIIIs forever, never hurt anything. I am also sure that probably 95percent of people here probably run 89. I know the car calls for premium but it does not require it if driven daily and not beaten on.

ABSOLUTELY run 93 octane

with the stock programming the mark 8 "runs on the knock sensors" at WOT, meaning it's pulling timing.

if you dont run 93 with the performance tune, it's gonna just pull out ALL the added timing.

for best results you should drop your spark plugs down ONE heat range which helps prevent knock sensor activity even on a stock tune car.

As long as your knock sensors function, you are correct.

I doubt the 95% claim though.

I'm lost why anyone would buy a performance chip and then run 89 octane.

premium is indeed recommended, but not REQUIRED with the stock programming, with a custom tune consider 93 octane REQUIRED now.


detonation WILL kill your oil pump....fact

yes, the knock sensors will pull timing BUT its only pulling timing AFTER the engine detonates.

knock sensor REACT TO DETONATION the do not PREVENT DETONATION



also, while I may not represent the majority of folks on this board..
in almost 1/2 million mark 8 miles, I have NEVER pumped any octane lower than 93 into my car, even before i put a chip in it.. i always ran 93.

FWIW I have a tune and some common mods and I always run 93. I would even run better than 93 if t was readily available at all gas stations. I did try regular and even mid grade a few times and like many are saying not only did it counteract my tune but it seemed even worse than stock programming due to the timing pull.

I would definitely concur that if you fill up with 93 and try it out again you should notice a difference as long as the tune is good. But also like you said if the tune is setup to enhance your new gears and they aren't installed yet than you may be right back to stock or worse performance even with the 93 octane.

you realize those ratings are a "minimum".

I'd inspected millions of gallons of gasoline over the years and (98% of the time) 93 octane is usually in the high 94s or 95 octane

i have never tested 91 octane that wasnt 92 or 93 octane.

remember what you see on the pump is the AVERAGE of the"knock motor octane number" (MON) which is a physical test and the "research octane number"(RON) based on a computer model and chemistry
you should see something like MON/RON on the sticker on the pump

so if it SAYS 91 octane rest assured its 92 or 93, unless you get it from a crappy company like citgo.

the BIG3 gas companies ALWAYS test higher than they are rated, in case a delivery truck "cross dumps" they dont want to lose a full fuel load.

crappy, unfranchised gas stations buy the fuel that didnt pass the test.
these crappy station often SKIRT the minimum ratings, which is where the
"bad gas complaints" come from

running a higher octane than required will COST you horsepower.

higher octane does not make more power.
higher octane means the gas is "less flammable".

lower octane will actually "make more power/energy" so long as detonation isnt present.

octane is merely a rating showing a fuels resistance to detonation/ping

You are 100% correct on that. I only meant that I would want it to further insure there would be no detonation. I goofed on the down side of over octane-ing your car lol.

Thank you all for the GOOD information. I was unaware that knocking could ruin your oil pump, how is that? I've just never heard that before, I didn't know. And I do realize that the tune will require higher octane so that the engine can run more advance, I just had a full tank of 89 when the chip showed up so I'm trying to burn it all before I fill up with some 93. Also, I've never had any problems with 89, and I know it is recommended, but just never noticed a difference any time I would try a fill up with 89 vs 93. Even after resetting the PCM after the fill up. I will be running premium from now on, I was just more curious if I would "feel" a difference. Thanks again for the good info guys.
 
And another thing, I'm not sure that the tune being for higher gears is really going to hurt my engine performance. Yes, it is going to shift way later, but power wise it is not effecting the motor.
 
Chevron or Shell 93 for me only. Was Phillips 66 down the street because there was no ethanol in their gas but now there is. Yes, it was labeled multiple times outside the store and even on the big sign where the gas prices were listed that their gas was ethanol free (sugar free) but now all of that is gone.

Since then, I have went to Chevron and Shell and sometimes BP for 93. It has always given me better gas mileage and I have never heard one ping. My guess is that 95% use 93 or 91 if that's what you have in your area. I can't speculate on ping shutting down an oil pump.
