a little venting.....

I know the feeling, I have slowed down a lot, I am 45 now and been busting my ass all my life and feel like I have nothing to show for it except an ex wife that feels it is ok to not work and drain me while the courts allow it.

From what I see posted by you I would say raise your prices on work, that will weed some people out, say no to some, take "me" time and guess what you will still have nothing to show but you will have some friggin peace. Not worth the coming problems at the pace you are going.

well, as my luck has it, ...blah blah blah... i cant win. happy memorial day!

Ok, time for some tough love.

From your post, your problems are those of your own making. Which means you have the power to change your outcomes.

Good luck. :)

Jamie you definitely need a vacation dude...not just from work...like you and the wife alone on a cruise with an all you can eat buffet and no stress! As I was saying on the phone just stop telling people you'll help them. Seriously, you do need to know when to say no.

I'll call around and see if anyone I know has a compressor for cheap.

You should go to the beach with your fam this weekend, and then hit the causeway with me on Fri or Sat. It just sounds like you need to get away from it all.

Well Jamie it seems out of the three places I have called for wheel repair its about $125-$150 per wheel to fix them. :( Guess thats a bit cheaper then new ones.

Jamie,I know I'm a rookie on this site but I've got to chime in on this one.I have been down this road, and brother,I mean to the letter as far as whats eating you,the only differance is I went through this with Harley's.It's bad enough to work a full time job,but then to come home and wrench on bikes(or Mark's)all night for other's,and still try to make time for your wife and kids, well my friend it will kill you!I tried to live this way for twenty years,I really thought I was doing the right thing by helping out others, but some will take advantage of that, and that can be the most depressing thing ever. And worst of all the love you have for these cars WILL turn into resentment twards them if your not carful.I have not ridden my Harley in over two years, and there was a time when I lived for that bike.So take a deep breath, stand back and look at whats really important in life,(kids, wife, yourself)and do what your gut tells you to do,trust me it will get better! GOOD LUCK!

Jamie I dont know if this is the wrong time to ask but I was trying to take off my drivers side valve cover and I lost my patience b/c it wouldnt :q:q:q:qing come off. So I grabbed the nearest object that I could find "which was a hammer" and went BUCK WILD on the cover and I :q:q:q:qing destroyed it.....can you fix it??? LOL!!

BAHAHAHAHA! But I never asked him, he offered to fix it for me. That's the difference ;)

thanks billy, seems like me and you are sort of the same kind of person. and for you guys who cant read, i am not blaming the way i feel on anyone else, i KNOW its my fault, am i :q:q:q:qing stupid? go :q:q:q:q yourselves. that only applies to the idiots. it was a vent, havent you ever vented before?? no :q:q:q:q its my fault lol thank you for that dr. phil!

and again, it isnt about what i am charging to work on cars, its the fact i can never say no, i dont :q:q:q:qing care about the money as much as never having time for anything else in life, so thats why i vented, i need to learn , in a nice way, how to say go shove your car up your ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after this coming weekend i am taking a break from working on cars for others for a little bit, i have my buddy Ed coming tomorrow with his 98 lsc for a door panel change, eatc change, and oil change, then most likely i will fix derrik's car thursday night, friday and saturday i am painting part of jeff in tampa's 96 lsc, sunday i am doing a coil spring conversion for my buddy bob and his 97 mark. after that i am shutting my phone off for a week or 2.

or for good!

You really need to turn it off for a month or two not a week. Your so burned out its not even funny. A couple of months will make a huge difference.

Yeah dude two weeks won't be enough. You need to take off at least a month! When you get back into it make a decision how many things a week are acceptable. Make a specific day or two you dedicate to working on the cars (if that's what you want to do) and don't stray outside those days. In other words don't let it inundate your life.

well, as my luck has it, i had new tires put on my car saturday morning. as my buddy mike locked my right front wheel onto the balancer and began to spin, i noticed a HUGE wallop in the wheel, HOLY :q:q:q:q i said, mike stopped the machine to make sure the wheel was on right and spun it again, wow what a joke, the car has had a steering wheel shimmy since the day i got it, but it was very slight, whatever no biggy, but now that it totally destroyed a tire in a few months it got worse. now i know why the rim is totally bent, i mean like slammed a curb at 35 mph bent. so, needless to say now i have to buy another rim from brad like i want to drop over $250 on a wheel. then, i took the time to pull my entire interior out to lay out the stereo system right, and i still have alternator whine when it's running. i bought a brand new hid kit for my 93 that has a dead ballast. i need to buy a fuel pump for my 93 because it keeps dieing on my wife in the middle of traffic. my air compressor at my shop finally quit this weekend. i got dragged into the shop today to check out a customers mark which ford told him at all kinds of problems with the rear end of the car, it doesnt have a single thing wrong with it, he was told the trans is shot, there is nothing wrong with it. i totally blew up at derrik and now my throat kills from the volume i made my voice on the phone with him, i told the kids we could go to gramma and grampa's to go swimming and didnt take them so now i am ass hole dad again, i got all my new brake rotors and pads in the mail and now i dont want to put them on because of the bent wheel. everybody and their mother keeps asking me to do this, do that, do this, wtf??????????????????????????????????????????????????

some of my customers and friends are members here, i'm not pointing fingers at anyone, i help you guys because i love these cars, and because i'll fix them for a whole lot less than a real mechanic or a dealer, i have a hard time saying no to anyone, but dammit, i'm gonna have to start soon. i am not a mechanic, i am not a public repair shop, my shop is just that, my shop, its for me not for everyone i know, sooner or later if i dont say no here and there i'm gonna get so burnt out that i say no for ever and i dont want it to get that bad. it seems that all i do is help everyone out all the time, and i never make time for me and my family, and then everything in my life shyt's the bed and everything goes wrong while i solve everything for everyone else. when the :q:q:q:q does something happen for me, when do i get to enjoy life? none of you know me inside, the real me, all you know is my lvc persona, i really live an unhappy, always :q:q:q:qing working, :q:q:q:qty life. i'm not looking for sympathy, just giving you a little inside on my day to day misserable life. all i have done since i turned 15 was bust my ass everyday and what do i have to show for it? nothing, i still do it, but now everyone i do it for benefits off it except me. everytime something happens to my stuff, its never one or two things, its all of them, one :q:q:q:qing problem after another and all at the same time, i cant win. happy memorial day!

Stay out of my diary!! I mean it

I think the idea came up about how much you charge because I'm sure people figured, as did I that you do the work so cheap that people wont leave you alone. I was just thinking if you raised how much you charged for a job and stick to it, you will have less work to do, but the same $$ coming in.

Nope, not once on a public forum.

You seem like a good guy, but if you ask a stupid question...;)

billy may not post much, but quality is weighing nicely over quantity ;) good words Hotties

jamie - in my world you are greatly appreciated and I hope I have never underpaid you! I am going to go dig up the pics from your old post...if I can find them, and let me know if you are serious this time.

Debi

nope i'd take 1,800 AS IS i fix nothing. the car randomly stalls, i'm 90% sure it needs a fuel pump, the traction control stays off all the time, something to do with the abs, but brakes work perfectly fine. i want to buy her a little 4 door jimmy or blazer something like that she doesnt need a 2 door v-8 anymore .
jamie - does she still look like this, and do you think I'd have problems with getting her home or should I plan on replacing fuel pump before I leave? http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=61998

Your right Jamie, you are your own worst enemy.

You have created a monster, one that you wanted but yet it now seems as though it's outta control.

Some of what I'm seeing does have a lot to do with you being able to take control of the situation, here's an example of how some of it is a catch 22 and what I have done about dealing with it, pick and choose how it would work for you:

Both of us have family that you love to spend time with, that is your right and you deserve to watch and be a part of them growing.

It's not about having what you want, it'a about having what you got.

And the big one is, that you have have done this for about ten years so your obviously not doing it for the experiance, your doing it for the money, which I know I certianly am.

As we all know with time come the experience of understanding that some things have to change to make things work for you.

I under stand most of you business is parts and a smaller protion is service.

One of the things is (as stated before, in this thread and others) price, this does a lot, it weeds out the people who want the cheepie stuff done, IE: pad slaps, band aid fixes, and the time spendt haggling for a deal in price.

I have escilated my pricing to a level that it is fair, look at the local market, here in Austin shops are between $85hr-$125hr, if I'm doing service work it's $75 an hour, that cheaper than the regular sevice shops, there should be no reason to ask me for a deal, that IS a deal.
Some jobs I price as a package deal IE: R&R engine replacement, I have set prices for 1st and 2nd gen jobs and it is what it is, anything above and beyond that is extra, and by the hour.

Something that I have noticed, if they will quibble about the money then several things follow:

They probablly don't have a daily driver and will want you to hurry with the job to get it out.

There vehicle are probably turb rockets and the possibiltiy that they will snowball is greater, Danger Will Robinson!!!

By jacking my rates I have eliminated a lot of these problems, for example, the Shelby owners I deal with, all have daily's to drive, they would rather drop it off and have the job done right rather than me rush through it to get the car back, which I will not do!

My policy is:

Drop it off, don't call me, don't email me, and don't stop by, if you do you have one hour to pick it up before I have it towed off, I adhear to this very closely, I have only had to exercise rule once.

Belive you me, I want your junk outta my place just as fast as you want it back, but I will not sacrifice the quality of my work for speed of returning the vehicle back to the customer (quality work is my business MO).

If they need it back yesterday, they need to go somewhere else.

I also have specific vendors I use, and for good reason, they are probably higher in most cases, here again, why would I spend two hours on the phone calling vendors to get the best deal when it may save the customer $20?
At $75hr, I just lost money, if they want a deal on parts, then they need to call and order them.

Weekends are for me and my family, and I like it that way, if for some reason I bend and work on a weekend, there is a specific reasons for it, and they are more than likely extremely great customers, and they know it, that goes along with me putting them up for the night (bed and breakfast style), and or giving them a loaner vehicle to drive.

Although, a lot of this seems pretty harsh, it protects me and them, they get fantastic service with quality work, and allows me to have a peace of mind and quality time with my wife and kids, and I'm not under the gun to have to jam out vehicles, if I wanted to do that I would go back to being a senior tech at a high volume shop.

I have an online calender for my customer's to pick and choose they're schedualing to make it easier on them, confrimation emails are sent out 1hr-12hr after getting thier request, by the operations manager.

And your phone..........

6pm, turn it off!
I had a vendor I have been needing to talk with for a week, he called me at 9:30something lastnight, I didn't answer it, what's waiting 12 hours?
Nothing, nothing at all, if things are that crazy then you need to rethink what your doing, I'm not gonna make things that stressful for me, so I don't answer my phone after certian hours, and especially at that time of night.

You had better be my parents, sister, any of my close friends/family, dying, dead, or some uber hot alien chic with a private island in the middle of no where and your calling me to let me know you just signed the paper of over to me, if I do decide to take my a$$ outta bed to answer.

And if your not any of the above, you had better be ready for what would happen next if I do answer, cause it won't be pretty.

So really what is comes down to in my book, is don't let the customers run your life or stress level, especally if your working full time and pulling this stuff on the side, no amount of money is worth the life threatening stress it will provide.

At first they will quibble and quarrel with you because of your new customer training tactics, but after they go someplace else and figure out they can't get any better than you, they will settle into your groove and follow the business guide lines you set fother, if they won't you didn't need them anyways, cause there are tons more where they came from that will.

Pending on the impressions I get from certian customers I will also do back ground checks on them, 90% are referrals, and I have and can make phone calls on them to find out what they are like and how they act, if they give me a red flag, they're out!!!

Your life, your business, YOUR SHOP you run it they way you want, give yourself the free time you deserve, you have the control, learn to use it, teach the customer how to respect it, other wise they will use you for all your worth, and take for you all your free time, and they won't give 2 $hits about you.

And once they have used you up they'll kick you to the curb, step out and look at yourself from the outside right now, you look to be 75% there, and it'll keep happening till to do something about it.

You can't help your family if you can't help take care of yourself, then where will your family be???!!!
