31 spline axles what fits?

That definitely helped. I always wondered what was what in a diff. Thanks for that. It helps to now know what I'm looking at. I'm one of those people that works better visually than through text. :)

Dan per your picture:

In order to change the stub shaft that goes into the diff, the CV boot will have to be changed as well as pressing off the bearing guide on the end of the shaft.

The Lincolin uses three rollers with needle bearings that are pressed to the end of the axle shaft, the Cobra axles have a bearing guide pressed on the shaft and uses 8 ball bearings in a cage for the Cobra axles.

I have both here if I get a chance after I clear out some work, I'll get you some pictures

Yar, I dont know all what goes into it, but I knew they could be changed - right?

I belive the splines in the axle shaft it's self could possibly be the same so that the tri-roller assy, could be pressed on to were the bearing guide went on the Cobra axle shaft, but the CV boot will have to be a trial fit basis, as the Cobra axle shaft as you can tell is by far much thicker in diameter than the Mark VIII version.

The simple solution is to just use the 99' Cobra axles which are 28 spline.

Reason being, it that there is no reason to use the 31 spline stuff when:

A) You don't even make enough RWHP to negate it.

B) Your not using a manual transmission, so your not doing 4000k+ side step the clutch launches.

C) There is no stall converter being used.

D) all the above and using wrinkle wall slicks

E) The Marks don't exibit wheel hop like the Cobras do, that's is what 99.9% of the time breaks the axles.

So my solution, is buy a Loc Right from Randy's Ring and Pinion for the open carrier/28 spline, your flavor of gears and be done with it, forget the rest and let the Big Boys play with that 31 spline stuff stuff.

Plain, simple, affordable, practical, and leaves all the resouces alone for people whom really need the parts.

I did the 31 spline stuff cause I got a killer deal on parts
so if you find a good deal on 31 or 28 they are both great
I have seen the spider gears break on stock T-birds and marks
but seems rare the 31 spline spider gears are much bigger along with
a bigger well everything even the carrier doesnt have the notches
were the clutches and steels go cut all the way through

Well, this has been covered MANY times before, but I'm not a search Nazi.

I didn't see it covered here so I'll tell you the pinion plate on the 03-04 cobra pumpkin will not work in the VIII. You will need to order the rear driveshaft flange from the terminator and get a 1350/1330 conversion u joint to mate it to the viii's driveshaft.

I have a LOW mileage complete termi pumpkin sitting in the garage, but can't seem to find a set of cobra CVs cheap enough to make it worth it. I also have a 28 spline trak-lok diff I am thinking about swapping in to the cobra pumpkin. At 5000 miles I think the gears can be reset fairly easily, bearings should be good to go as well.

I HAVE this in my car you dont need to find a cobra drive shaft flange.
Take the flange out of your stock rear end and put it into
the cobra rear end its that simple

Ls?

If you'll allow me to jump into your thread, is there someone knowledgeable regarding the possible crossbreeding of the heavier-duty components shown here into the rear end of an '02 LS? I ask because my in-process project for land speed racing will require upgrades to the factory hardware. In so far as possible, I'd like to use existing stuff instead of having to get custom parts made. I understand that an 8.8 diff can be installed into my existing carrier, but haven't a clue regarding the improved spline-count and larger half-shafts.

Land speed racing doesn't require 'launching' as drag-racing does, but I'll be running a pair of high-boost turbos and have a 400 HP-capable N2O/methanol system operating.
Thanks in advance for your input.

6 of one......half dozen of the other.

I just wasn't keen on removing the original flange, (read, messing up factory preload)

now that I am going to have the diff swapped I will use a Lincoln flange.

Speaking of which.... I have said cobra driveshaft flange and u joint NIB if anyone needs em.
