So many of you know and have been incessantly trying to help me figure out this vibration issue. The problem is above 70mph the car starts to vibrate so violently that the dashboard, rear view, and everything shakes a good 1/2" up and down. It tends to get worse when I am going that fast and let off the gas. So accelerating hard above 70mph makes it shake and then letting off makes it even worse. Once under 70mph the vibration is gone.

1. Originally Ford Nut thought it was the driveshaft, which I'm starting to think maybe that really is the problem.

2. After Ford Nut came up with that idea I took the car to the shop and they said I have broken motor mounts. Problem is if it's the motor mounts causing the vibration I speak of wouldn't the vibration be consistent and not just above 70mph?

3. The shop then said motor mounts wouldn't cause vibration over 70mph and blamed it on my bad tires. So I bought new tires. Vibration is till there no change after the tires.

So now when looking at aftermarket driveshafts it mentions that there is a strong vibration when you get gears. I wonder if I'm getting that same vibration without gears and it is my driveshaft.

Could my new exhaust setup be heating up my driveshaft warping it?

What do you guys think? The person with the biggest spoon is the only person that gets to claim they spoonfed me! :D
 
Not knowing the history with your car, it's only a guess. You said new tires, it could be a bent rim. They should have caught it when they balanced the new tires, but I seen some unbelievable things missed by qualified people making basic mistakes. As for the drive shaft, It's not uncommon for our drive shafts to do just what you describe. Just my 2 cents, good luck.
 
Unfortunately there are sooooo many options but......

I'm going through the SAME EXACT problem but the shaking isn't as bad as yours that I know of anyway. It gets violent between 68-80... Once I pass 80 it smooths out but if I let the gas off the pedal then it feels like hell.
My friend is a good mechanic & when he test drove my car he told me that he noticed the steering wheel shake plenty when braking at 30 mph which means the shaking comes from warped disc brakes. He told me all 4 of my disc brakes are horrendously warped & they could even ruin my bearings! I simply can't replace them due to my economic situation. I just thought I'd share my story since it's EXTREMELY similar!
 
mine is the same way between 70 and 85 so I tend to end up driving too fast or too slow :(

I hope to get it sorted before the new driveshaft and 4.30s go in :)

one of the tires threw a weight like 10 months ago, that probably adds to it
 
What year is your Mark?
There is a 93 in my salvage yard with a good drive shaft, I have a bad rear end hop and vibration going on too... But I think my sway bar bushings may be shot because mine always tries to hop it's ass to the left
 
The car is a 97. Pm me your prices for the 93 shaft.

I have a limited budget so my problem is I can't really guess wrong on this. I can fix one thing. I was going to do the motor mounts and tranny mount. But If that's not what's causing this I wouldn't want to spend all of my money on something that doesn't fix the issues I'm trying to fix.

Is there any way to find out if it's the driveshaft?
 
Sounds like the driveshaft u-joints to me. I personally don't think its an engine or transmission mount being the sole cause of your vibrations.
 
I have the same problems as mentioned above. Replaced entire suspension and new tires. Only thing I can think of are: rims or the driveshaft.

Checking driveshaft bolts: where? front and rear?
 
Sounds like muffler bearings.

Are the muffler bearings next to the rodical beam thrusters?

I'm thinking you're probably right. I'm going to try and tackle the engine mounts next weekend. If I do that and the vibration is still their I'll buy a dynotech driveshaft.
 
I would say it is a combination, the drive shafts will most always cause a slight vibration, but with a bad engine mount it will be transmitted to the car 200%, so fix the engine mount and most all should go away.
 
Your driveshaft might just be low on pneumatic fluid. :D

No, seriously, how are your ball joints? That was the problem on mine. It didn't show up until i hit 65-70.

That is what I told him, because of the clunking.
That is before he found out his trans mount and motor mounts are shot.

Trans mount being shot will give you all kinds of issues.
The whole drivetrain is bouncing around like a dam basket ball.
Fix you mounts and I bet 99% of your issues will be fixed.

Your car is not safe.

Pay Jamie the amount he needs to fix your car if you can't fix it yourself.
It will be done right be the best guy in your area, and better then any shop.

update... $42.58 for the 93 drive shaft

a tad more research for ya..Advance has your motor mounts (Anchor) for $73.00 list / $142.00 cost each
list is if you have a commercial account at the store, cost is for the general public
trying to find a trans mount----

I think I'm going to tackle it myself. I don't have a ton of money to give Jamie. So that isn't an option. I'll just have to try it with the online advice from a few kind souls on this site and pray for the best.

Sapper I don't have gears...but I wish I did ;) As for engine mounts I already have a set of rubber engine mounts I got from supercoupeperformance.com and a oil pan gasket as well. I just need to find a tranny mount now.

Laser yet again you make me laugh! Laser always comes to the rescue with a funny response! HAHA!
 
If you have a kind enough friend with a spare known good drive shaft and a few hours of time. Have them give you a hand and swap out the drive shaft and see what happens. I know even when the two piece came out, ford had a lot of problems with them twisting like a pretzel and shearing into two pieces. To add another possible culprit your output shaft may also play a role in your vibration... but try a driveshaft first as it will be the least intrusive thing you can do.
 
I had said problems with my 96'. So I went and got a one piece 93' shaft and put it in when I did my 4:10 Track Lock swap. Still had it and it kept getting worse and worse. So I changed the U joints like some suggested but still same vibrations.

Finally while I was getting a trans filter done at a shop I worked at they told me my trans was broke and it wasn't there fault! As they added fluid it would dump out the back of the trans as fast as they put it in :eek:

I went under to see and the tailshaft housing bolts had come loose enough to just let it wiggle and now leak. I tightened up the 13mm bolts and the vibration went away :cool:
