Hey guys,
Someone asked me last night, why do we mod our cars in certain ways? I said that It gave the car an attitude or a soul. It also makes the car distinctly yours. I do it because my car is my hobby, and who likes a stock car anyway?

Why do you guys mod and what types of modifications do you generally lean towards and why? (drivetrain, exterior, stereo)

I do Stereo first thing so I can have my Sirius/XM plus iPod. Of course that leads to me messing with the cross over that built into the Alpine and then I have to put in my JL sub and amp.

Then the car feels like it's mine!

Normally I go drivetrain, exterior and then audio.

This 95 had been a little of all three at once.

I usually start with the cosmetic/stereo stuff first. Performance is usually the last thing I do, if I end up doing it at all.

One thing I would like to do in the perf/driveability category is to get a sct2 again.

I mod it cause it isnt fast enough, stop enough, turn enough or loud enough. :D

Hobby, people don't understand how that's fun, they just don't get it.
But when the get in the car for a ride.....then they want it.

Its a accomplishment to take something that nobody wants and turn it into a car people stop to look at.

I go power first, appearance next.
A real hotrod doesn't need a sound system it has one coming out the back ;)

I wanted a Lincoln version of a Cobra. To build an affordable American car with luxury and performance. I found it easier and more rewarding to make the Mark VIII more like a Cobra than to make the Cobra more like the Mark VIII. Not to mention more affordable.

Depends on what vehicle. Daily driver like my Mark Viii it's all sound system and comfort.
My Thunderbird is all power. Although most of the time (all of the time) has gone to a full restoration of the car because it was total junk but now it's time to add more power ;)

Making as base Mark an LSC is OK, adding Clear HID lights is OK, lowering, wheels, stereo, interior, is the most I would do, especially if there is a half a chance I wont own the car in a year, it is wasteful to do any go fast stuff.

I think we mod these cars to personalize them to our own wants/needs/desires. I love the bodystyle of the Mark VIII as well as the sophistication of the 4-wheel independent suspension and multivalve DOHC V-8 engine. I also enjoy the creature comforts such as auto level control, heated seats, and power everything (as far as I'm concerned, I'll never "crank" a window up or down again for the rest of my life:D). I can't afford to do any real mods, so I have to do little things like installing blue LED interior lights, HID hi beams, and AM/FM/DVD head unit. Then there's the 3rd cat delete, H-pipe and cherry bombs to give it a unique sound that's all mine:) Eventually I'd like to make it faster. But that costs money. Something I don't have. So that will have to wait until the kids grow up and move out or I win the lottery, whichever comes first;)

its more than a hobby for me its like a lifestyle. you WANT your car a certain way.when i bought the mark it was pristine i had my zx-10 for speed that i rode most of the time, i just needed something for rain, etc and was going to leave it alone. when my suspension went into day after day issues, searching led me to this forum and all the performance things available. so, i decided to do what in do to all the cars ive owned, which were sports cars t/a irocs, 5.0, 01 cobra, and a 74 impala, this is just a luxury model.but going from 10 second cars to trying to get a luxobarge into the low 13 or 12's n/aseems like a task. im against nirtous, ill probably enup with a supercharger evantually, maybe not,but its not a hobby its a lifestyle for me,fast cars, loud music, partying late with strippers, the gym, fighting all of it, now that im paralyzed im left with only a couple of those.

That's where I'm at. Mine has almost 119K and runs extremely smooth. No shudder, idles without the slightest shake or vibration, even with the air on. I do not drag race so really, IMO (in my case), why spend the cash to perk it up faster and cause me to get a ticket that's just gonna cost me more money and higher insurance rates? I'm just speaking for myself here. I want the booming system in mine for the HWY rides. Kinda like a NOS bottle. You know it's there whenever you need it.

I go for the appearance on the interior, has to have a system in it and I do all that myself. Next will be exhaust. Already have the wheels that I wanted to put on it but haven't put them on yet. After that, LSC front and rear bumper covers and I'm calling it a day. I'm done after that. Air ride is 100% complete and all new Motorcraft. I can't call that a modification but I can say my car is very well taken care of. I love my car and I try to treat it with respect as if it were a person.

Mods that concern stalls, gears, Cobra intake, supercharger, twin turbos, C-heads and all the other stuff associated with these things will never happen for me. Has nothing to do with not having the money for it. I got it but not wasting it on stuff like that. I just want a nice clean ding free, rust free Mark VIII. That's all. :)

People that do choose to make their Marks stomp out 300 to 500 RWHP, I'm happy for you. It's your hobby and that's what cranks your tractor and makes you feel good. Will I ever see you to race? I doubt it. If I know you can beat me, I ain't gonna race you anyway lol. I do admire many of the Mark VIII's on here that have been modded. I don't look down on those that want to do the things they do to their cars. Again, if you do it, apparently it is your hobby and you get a good feeling from doing it and you only live one time. Do what makes you feel good and be proud of what you have accomplished with your car.

One thing I do hate seeing is for someone to have a nice Mark but they're broke as a joke. No Mark VIII should be owned by anyone that stays broke, period! If you don't have the means to take care of it as stock or modded, let the next man have it that can. Ok, I've said more than enough.

by the way no limit, the ride height is just beeeeeaaaaauuuuuuuutiful in your mark, classy.

Thanks gr81 but that's just the "Rays Switch" and sitting height. I did however drive it right after that particular pic was taken and I didn't reset the switch because I knew the road I was about to pull out onto was super smooth for about a 1/4 mile, maybe 1/2 mile. I learned very fast that the road was not as smooth as it appeared to be lol. When I came to my turn that leads me to my house, I pushed the reset and got it back up to a sensor lowered height. My actual ride height is about an inch higher than sbcaprice's car. In other words, I'm using the air ride lol.

I mod everything ..engine, intake, exhaust, trans, interior, body, stereo, wheels, brakes, suspension, steering components, light bulbs ....because I can

At least being paralyzed, your qualified to sit ..which lets you keep the strippers :)

We want

I guess it's the perfectionist in us -- We want what we want --- and we really really want it --- Just think - this car is at the top of it's class -- 2 door american rear wheel drive all aluminum 4 cam 4 valve V8 -- air ride bucket seats console --- to make it what we want is like having a pedigree -- good DNA.
Either that or it's { the little d+ck syndrome }

What I really want is a tranzilla 6 speed - close ratio - 2:66 lo - update to beehives and drive the pith out of it until I die.
