I am going to get the ten spoke wheels on my car rechromed because the ones on the car right now are peeling and look terrible, and I don't want to buy another set to have the same thing happen in a few years...

Has anyone had experience getting chrome work done, and does anyone have a place to recommend?

i'm gonna voice my opinion here and say if you want it to last, its better and cheaper but go with nickle instead of chrome. there is a slight difference in appearence, chrome is chrome, nickle is chrome looking with a slight slight hint of a bronze to it, side by side you could tell which is which, but once plated and on the car you'll never know chrome from nickle. i like nickle better but thats my opinion.

this is chrome plate:

Don't waste your time.

If the chrome is peeling/bubbling, the base metal below is pitted and corroded.

I bought a set off someone who had them returned from a chrome shop because once 'de-chromed' the base metal was too far gone to be re-chromed.

I was going to use them for drag wheels but found the snowflakes were lighter, so now they are just oversized paperweights. :(

Aftermarket wheels are cheap enough now that maybe you could find a nice set for less than the re-chroming. What ever you decide to do, keep the wheels waxed. If you live where it snows & they salt the road I guess you should pray.

I like the ten spokes a lot... but it seems like finding a good set is getting really hard...

Gonna have to look into this more...

What about getting a set of the painted 10-spokes, and having them chromed? I would imagine the painted ones would still have been protected, and therefore should be in good shape for the chroming process.

thats what i would do, the silver 10 spokes tent to hold up very well. perfect for chroming. you can even get them powder coated chrome too, the new powders are killer, specially chrome, you cannot tell the difference anymore the chrome powder has a luster like chrome plate now.

I have seen the painted 10 spokes in person and the finish does seem to hold up very very well... now to just track a set down.

What my next goal will be is keeping the new wheels from corroding like the old ones....

just keep them clean, out of salt, and put antiseize on the back side where the rim sits on the hub you'll be all set!

lol been there seen that, believe it or not that nut will come off no problem as long as you have a good impact gun with alot of air. but there wont be any threads left on the axle shaft. if i were you, over the winter while you have time and if you have the money, i would order a new set of axles for it and replace them.

If that were my car, I wouldn't be too worried about the nut not coming off, I'd be more worried about it coming off as I'm driving down the road, since there are no longer any threads holding it on. I've never seen that before on ANY axle on any car. WTF happened?

Wanna see something scary...

One of the axle shafts on my 98 is heading that way. Not that bad yet....I'd say about half as bad as that. The threads are still mostly there, but I'm scared that once the nut is taken off, the threads are gonna come with it. I've got axle shafts next on the list of stuff to do.

There used to be an eBay store that had them *supposedly* brand new (44 available), but I can't find them anymore. I had them saved in my favorites, but they aren't around anymore. :(

I've got two axels out of my 97 parts car sitting on the floor of the garage waiting to go in when I put the 4.30's in :)

I sprayed them down with some JB 80 and just letting them sit... I'm sue the 3/4" impact will buzz them off though.

I wish I had a parts car.

I bought the 97 ($900) under the impression that it would probably end up as a parts car, but it just runs too well for me to take it apart. At least, for now. It may still end up as a parts car. I've put about 10k miles on it so far since Feb. It keeps the miles off my baby--the 98.

its called road salt and water, it happens to way more mark VIII's than you could even imagine. and there are still threads on there, under the nut, just not at the end of the shaft. that nut will never come off driving, maybe it would rot off if it sat like it is for another 5 years, but it would never come off driving, and even if it did, the way the IRS is built you could drive the car for years with no nut on the axle as long as you never jumped the car. the axle cant come out of the hub by just taking the nut off, the rear end has to be taken apart before you can get the axle out anyway. its not good with all the rust back there, but unfortunately that is an all too familiar sight with these cars now, specially any northern mark VIII's.
