Turbo kit thread

Thanks guys, its great to have her back and running.

How's the transmission holding out?

Doing good. I will be rebuilding it soon too. I actually wanted to do that before the turbo, but I didn't get a chance to.

320.. that's a little disappointing, but for a first run that's always good to be positive :D Hopefully with some upgraded parts you can get towards your goal of 400, it would be sick.

Any plans for the gears? or did you already do the swap too

Yeah, it was very dissapointing at first. I was there all day so I thought about it for a good 2-3 hours on getting the boost controller to up the boost or not. I just decided to to risk it yet, the last thing I was right now is to send my ls back to the shop for more weeks when I just got it back.

I was very close to saying :q:q:q:q it, 7+ psi i'm in!!!!! But last second I backed out.

I'll think about the gears later, but for now I will probably just stick to the gen1 carrier with a t-loc. I picked everything up already a few weeks ago, just need some time to get it done.

Vids! Or at least photoshoot!

On my way out right now or I would. Tonight I'll upload some.

Glad you've got it back and are enjoying it finally. Numbers are nice and all, but a safe tune that isn't going to blow your hard work through the hood and out the engine block is far better. :) Enjoy it, man! :Beer

True, thanks!

Nice! I would have loved to see a 400hp LS but still! what are the crank numbers? 360 ish??

can't wait for vids/pics.

i know what you mean about the rasp lol and i don't even have a turbo, been considering resonators myself.

are you going with the aero turbines? i found them on ebay for like $38 shipped.

I dont know what stock rwhp is, I got 225 with a tune, 2.5'' exhaust and magnaflows. That would be a 20% loss, which normal would be 15-20 I think.

Working that back, it would be ~360 to the crank. ILLS hit 350 or so with his so I'm sure I can push it to that with a little more boost but I decided not to risk it for now.

Oh and I also picked up some mpg which I was surprised about. I would get ~24 mpg on the highway going 70.On the way back with the turbo, I reset the mpg reading and when I got home, I was at 31.8 mpg. Very surprised about the gain, I thought I would loose some since it using more fuel.

Do the math by hand; tuning has most likely made the fuel economy calculations skewed.

As for the build: well done, and 300WHP should not be disappointing. I know that for some reason there was a dream of 400WHP on this, but the reality is a few pounds of boost is not magic. You probably gained ~70HP at the crank, which is 14HP/PSI...anything over 10HP/PSI is doing good!

Sometimes I feel like my LS has 180hp... She doesn't like 100+F days.

I totally noticed that today and during the recent heat waves. I was about to post inquiring as to why my LS seemed to take 6 years to get to 3000 rpms (see if maybe it was something else besides heat)... I thought I was back in my Escort lol. Heat really seems to rob my LS of its low RPM torque

Same with mine. I think it's the transmission...when it's really hot it shifts like crud. In the winter it shifts with ease and the car seems quicker.

I need to do a filter and flush and possible solenoid.

..I thought I was the only one...

Cooler denser air will make it run better, hot days and an air filter in a hot engine compartment isn't the best performance condition. Same principle to using an intercooler with a turbo

Can't wait to see the vids, awesome achievement

Hmm, my shifting seems fine (besides 3rd which is always kinda like "what?") but under 3K rpm its just SLLUGGIISSHHH, as soon as I get over 3K I actually have to let off the gas or I'll start trucking real quick

Congrats on getting 'er back. I'm sure you had a big ol' grin on your extended drive home.

Man this is so awesome. I need to get out of school already so I can do this kind of stuff haha

Same here. Need a second vehicle. In time...in time.

+10000000

if the fan is running, "forget about it"

Expected, when my ac is on, dubbed out turd. "fuhgettaboutit"

Yeah I was also thinking the tuning skewed the mpg reading. With the half done tune the original tuner left, it read 18 on the highway going 70 so when I saw 31 with the new tune, I was surprised. I'll try and calculate it out and see.

Thanks for making me feel better about 300 wrhp

I just put some aero turbine resonators on and its sounds better, no more rasp.

I'll be making an exhaust and turbo vid, then I'll post up the dyno vid as well.

Brett said he probably wouldn't make it a few months back after the some delays and the trouble it was to get it done. I spoke with him last night and he said he would talk to his welder and see about making it. He said he would let me take the orders so I'll be the middle man I guess. I'll update the thread on how the turbo and ls run over the next 30,60, and 90 days. Then if anybody is still interested, they can talk to me about it.

He said the kit is good for 700 hp, but its up to each owner how far they want to push their stock ls or build it for more boost.
