I’m experiencing a shaky steering wheel on my 1997 Lincoln LSC with 66k on the clock. It’s most pronounced at about 50 mph and as I increase in speed, the issue seems to dissipate. The shake does not feel like an out of balance tire. I don’t feel the shake in the car; the steering wheel just oscillates quickly back and forth. While I was adding more tire sealant to the air bags the other day, I grabbed a hold of each tire in different directions to see if there was any play in the front end components. I did not notice any play. It all seemed to be tight which is to be expected on a car with only 66k miles on the clock. Could a front end that is out of alignment be causing this problem? I notice that the front tires have significant wear on both edges. I attributed the wear to the car being driven with the front end slammed before I bought it. But I guess I should check the alignment.

I should also mention that the shake is not due to warped rotors because braking is not what causes the shaky steering wheel.

My wheel wobbled at 40 to 50 mph because one of the weights had fallen off. I took it and had inner stick on weights installed by Wal-Mart and drove away with everything smooth. No more wobble and smooth on the HWY.

Our cars are very sensitive to front end balance, alignment, tire presure issues.
My mark has a vibration in the rear that I know is because the shop I had balance my tires didn't put the static weights in the rim like I told them to...when I cleaned my rims last week I noticed I have no weights in the rear at all

I have the same problem --- sometimes I feel it around 50/60 - sometimes I dont feel it at all.. once I hit 80+ I dont feel it anymore :)

You need to do the same thing when you have your wheels moved back where they belong. Have the static weights (like Sapp mentioned) put on the inner part of the wheel and I bet you'll have a smooth ride at all speeds. Wal-Mart does this cheap. Get rid of the weights on the outside of the wheel or any weights that are hammered on to the inside edge or outside edge.

With the age of the car I suspect that it needs a complete front end rebuild. Rubbers and seals get dried out and water then gets to places its not meant to be (ball joints).

Ya im doing my sway bar links and ball joints this week - lets see if this helps me at all? if so Ill report back!

I'm gonna throw out my guess... possibly a broken belt in the tire. Jack up the front end, and look the wheel straight on from the front and give it a spin, see if the wheel spins true. But if it isnt that, I would bet money on out of balance.

+1

check allighnment and ballance first

Weren't you having some front end probs about a week ago, and I gave you a bunch of advise on how to check
it out?

Yeah, one bag started leaking so I had to add some more bug juice into it. So far it is holding well but I need to find another bag.

bent rim.

and for all you guys who think its funny to talk about parkinsons like its nothing i take offense to it, until you have spent 13 years of your life taking care of someone who has it severely you wouldnt dare joke about it.
