MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY!

Ok, well, it's not a HUGE deal but I flipped out when this happened & I like when everything works in my car as it should. Where is the physical compass in our cars? Mine went bonkers & I suspect it must be in the trunk.
I took my 12 inch PUNCH sub-woofers out of my F-150 & into the trunk of my Mark VIII this afternoon & 30 minutes later I start the car & I get this instead of my digital compass...

:confused:I am assuming that the HUGE magnets on my sub-woofers completely threw off my compass. I removed the speakers but I still get the same display. Is it a big coincidence? I don't use it but it's nice to have everything working in our cars as it should. Is there anything I can do to fix this? HELP!

Ya. The 93 to somewhere in 95 have the unit in the trunk. In late 95 and 96 for sure it was a module located under the front mirror.

try disconnecting the battery to see if that works. then try and re cal it.

Ya, sounds like the sub magnets are interfering with the module on that plastic tray. Here's the pic out of my book:

WOWOWOWOW! Now I know what I have to do to shed some weight off my car. GOD there's so much crap in there! I thought it was just the JBL amp. Go figure!

Yeah for sure it's my sub-woofers then. The box is too big & didn't fit with the speakers pointing outward, it only fits very snug with the speakers pointing up! In other words, the left speaker is literally sitting RIGHT BELOW the compass module! Oh boy! Back to square one! I really wanted those sub-woofers in there. Maybe it's a sign that I need to grow up & toss the subs!

my sub doesnt mess with it.
i have a jl audio 12w7 and it has a huge magnet

Would you rather have the subs or the compass? With a modern GPS system, who needs a factory compass?

How many of hundreds of M8 owners have big ass subs in their trunk? A lot. Just let it calibrate and see if it comes back. I've only ever had that message one time in my 5 years of m8 ownership.

It's not a matter of which, I just like everything to work like it came from factory!

My 93 & 95 both did this with subs, you can relocate the compass to solve the issue.

Any ideas on where to relocate it to? Does it have enough wiring so that I can move it away from it's current home?

The thing with mine is that the speakers are (FACING UP) literally sit about 2 inches from the module. This means that the magnet is about 4 inches from it. It's been displaying the same message since yesterday afternoon & it won't calibrate. As long as the magnet is RIGHT THERE it simply won't calibrate.

Again...

Anyone with ideas on where to relocate the module to?

Looking in the trunk, it's up on the amp rack to the right hand side. I took mine out of my 94 because I removed the entire amp rack to make room for the three 10" sub box. You have to ask yourself this question. How often do you really press the button to see what direction you're going?

If you sell the car, remove the subs, calibrate again in a big circle and all will be ok.

I never use it, that's for sure but I was finally teaching my girlfriend since she's a bit air headed when it comes to sense of direction!:( (Thank God she knows nothing of this thread!:D)

Make new sub box that fits
Can't even begin to afford that right now. I have another box with 2 10" Kickers as opposed to this HUGE box with the 12's that will fit way better.

that or buy a gen 2 lolol :D
I will have a Gen II & that's a promise! However it will sit next to my '93!:)

I would disconnect it, leave it setting where it is and when sub removal happens, connect it back. Buy the GF a pocket compass or something or add GPS to her phone if it's capable or just let her get lost. She'll make it back ok. :)

Go to your local junkyard. Look for a review mirror that has a compass built into it. The wiring is usually very simple to hook up to your rearview mirror.

Then you have an always on compass in your rearview mirror and you never need to use your factory compass anymore.

That is what I did when my compass went funky.

My 95 has it built in onto the mirror. Just less :q:q:q:q for me to unhook and pull out when the amp rack comes out.

Nice idea! I'm just too evil & I'll end up getting her one of those 25 cent compasses that come in those bubble gum dispensers!:D

Can I adapt a 1996 Mark VIII compass into my 93? Those were mounted on the rear view mirrors as well. I remember seeing it in the 96 I just sold.

Guys, here's my set up, this is why it won't be possible to calibrate. They are just TOO CLOSE!

I don't know about adapting it but my idea is to totally bypass the factory compass. When your rearview mirror has the compass, you never use the one on the dash anymore.

Go to the junk yard and look for a later model car with the compass digital readout built into the rear view mirror and use that. I used one out of a 2005 Lincoln LS. The wiring should be easy enough to hook up.

Seriously, you really should point the subs to the rear (stopping the compass problem) and getting a better sound and I would mount that amp flat down.

Just another idea!

I'm well aware of that but it doesn't fit. The box is too tall so I had to flip it & mount the amp on it's side. I think I'm goin to take it back into the truck. The hell with all this. I already have the BASS in the truck, might as well keep it there & keep the Mark clean. Plus I don't like the extra weight!

Whether I continue with the sound system or not I'm definitely going to look into this!
