LaserSVT 98 White Pearlescent Progress Thread

Wow, what a weekend! :( :) :( :)

So I get to Austin about 9:30am on Sunday and pull into Jeffs shop to do my gears. I was like a retard in a helmet factory, beautiful Stangs all over. Was really cool but we had work to do so we moved the 65 coupe off the rack and got my car up there. Jeff knows his cars and in no time he had the axles out of the spindles and then pulled from the car.

Then we he a snag. The exhaust was fully welded so the entire assembly had to be dropped out as one piece. That brought us to another problem, all the hangers were welded to the car too. No choice, had to cut them off.

IMGP0844.jpg

We get the exhaust on the ground and not only is it the wrong mufflers but its not a mandrel bent pipe kit like the guy said when I bought the car nor is it 2.5", its only 2.25" :(
So when I order the Borlas and the x-resonator and tips I will also get one of the mandrel bent pipe kits and make the exhaust how it should be. :)

So the pumpkin was finally out and ready to be torn apart:

So me and another guy (forgot his name) cleaned up the case:

IMGP0840.jpg

Now heres where things turn to complete crap. I am sitting in the shop while everyone else is taking care of other stuff and I notice this very small issue:

IMGP0842.jpg

I was ready to break down and just lay on the ground and throw a temper tantrum. I was so freaking pissed off and didn't know what the hell to do. The guy swore they were Explorer gears but IDK what the hell they are from. Pinions too long and wrong thread ....... just total crap. Jeff put on his tights and cape and saved the day. He had a set for his wifes car and called his wife and asked her to drive the 1.5 hours to come deliver the gears. I was floored and couldn't believe how much they helped me. I will make it up to them some how. She has a beautiful GT that has caused them enough grief and then I come and take her gears. :( Ill make it all good though.

So a couplea few hours latter he had the pinion and bearings in:
IMGP0847.jpg

Getting the backlash set was problematic though and it took him, me and his wife a couple hours to get the carrier and gear set into the pumpkin. But it finally went in and is set to perfection. :)

A little before 1 AM and oil was being added. Poor Jeff, at this point I believe he was ready to kill me.

IMGP0848.jpg

So we took her out for a drive and it all worked fine so we called it a night. I left around 2AM for my 3.5 hour drive back home. I couldn't keep my eyes open so I pulled over for an hour nap but wasn't comfortable so I set off again. I fought pure exhaustion (was working on friends Mark the previous night until after midnight) and almost didn't make it. The turn right before my house thats a 20mph corner I had drifted off for a second or two and was 40' before the turn doing 65mph when I came too. I had to stand on the brakes and then nail the throttle and modulate to keep it on the road through the turn. Woke me right up! I got home and crashed hard in bed. Was supposed to be at work at 9am but didn't awake till after 10.

Woke up and did the mad dash to get out the door but my cars rear end was on the ground. :( Knowing what was just done I knew where to look. Sure enough one of the rear bag solenoids was leaking fast from a broken o-ring. Ended up taking apart three small flashlights until I found the right size o-ring. Tail seems to be holding fine now.

Heres one last little thing. Never thought I would see one in person. This is a guys new resto project. Its an 84.5 Predator Mustang, number 49 of 50 built that year. Its ruff but the dude is well on his way (thanks to Jeff) to getting it restored to its previous glory.
Previous owners painted right over the GT 302 decals on the side, car was really abused but has a solid chassis and will look bad azz when the guy is done.

Bill, I'm so sorry about the O-ring sir :(

I am glad you made it home ok, I was worried about you especially since, my 1.5 hour drive home was done with my forehead on the steering wheel too, that was one long ass day.

Don't worry about Lori's gears, that's no big deal, but thank you so much for bringing the axles and uprights for her IRS conversion, that really helped that project get another jump forward in that department, now I just need to get the carrier assy from Dick Head ( :) )and we'll be even further along.

I too thanked Lori againthis afternoon when I got up since she had been at an open track event driving all weekend, and was already worn out from racing her Cobra R clone, and she said it was no problem and was hoping you were happy with the mod ;)

If you didn't see them, here are the pics from the open track even, sorry Bill I couldn't get you on track like I said, but prolly a good thing due to the time we spent at the shop.

BTW, even though it kinda goes with the job, thanks for letting me drive your Mark, what a really nice toy you have there, and guys let me tell you it looks so much better in person than it does in pictures, I was very please to have this fine machine gracing the halls of my shop and welcome it back anytime, it was a great addition to the vehicles that are normally in there but were at the track that day with my wife and her clone.

Nathan, my technical college ex-student and part time apprentice, was his name, he's always pleased to help and trys his best, a little goofy, but so big hearted and always willing to lend a hand when he can, with no expectations, he's had it really hard personally these past few months and I give him huge credit for sticking it out and pressing forward.

When your ready, gather the rest of all your parts and we'll just keep chipping away at the things you want to do, to get them done, and we'll hit a open track day again, I promise, and get that monster out on the track

It was great to finally meet you in person, and you know your welcome to stop by anytime you like, if for nothing else to ass around and enjoy so great home cooking.

Jeff

One day we'll get the wing painted and on this damn thing!

BTW Bill, per the conversation about my wife's car and it dramatic inception with all the gory details here's the link to and on going story about all the crap we have had to endure, so if you think for a minute that your the only one who has issues with shops take 15 min and ponder over this thread, and see that I too have been in your shoes, along with my wife, but the clone is finally coming around and is closer than ever to being complete, well sorta.......

Here's the link to the full saga, hope you all enjoy:

Jeff -

Is that your house Jeff?

No sir, my wife and I live in a bubble far from civilization we're very recluse, not very fond of people, and love being out in the country, when I'm not tossing wrenches at cars I'm working in my yard, doing home improvements, and hanging out with my fur persons (pets).

That's actually and old bar/restaurant that's on the Colorado river in old historic downtown Bastrop.

Jeff

he's riding around with the stealth generator running at 104%

no wonder they keep running into him.. they cant see him

one of the very very good factory options for the mark 8 was the built in Stealth Generator, cept for those dumbazzes that will run into your azz cause your "cloaked".

Putting exhaust on the car will help defeat the stealth generator

lol thats like me ive lives in my small town for 9? years and i know nobody, well there is the lady at the gas station and the pizza joint but thats it, i hate people lol

that pic reminds me, last summer i found a place like that out near me, kinda like a old gas station setup. after i change back to the 18's i gotta try and find it again.

over all looks like fun as always only thing im confused by id why did a o-ring leak, did you guys deflate the rear bags for some reason?

Yup, deflated the bags to make it all easier to work with. Gotta say he did make all the stuff I was dreding look easy. Had the axles out of the spindles in under 10 seconds from the time he removed the axle nut. Got the LCA bolt out without cutting it AND discovered a new way to get that LCA bolt back in easily without cutting it. We did trim mine before we discovered this trick though.

Jeff is rerally my hero for finding something stupid I did wrong. My rear sway bar links were too long causing no pre load on the bar at all and also was the cause of the clunk in the rear I never could find. After shimming it out some the tail is SO much nicer and the clunk is gone! :D :wrench

so this is from when you had the other car but, are these the links you were using
For future reference a 99-04 Mustang GT uses the same sway bar end links in the front that the Mark VIII uses in the rear. Same length, diameter and bushing size. $15 and I am good to go. I will slap them in tomorrow morning.

I hate to say it thought you guys did the rear diff swap the hard way... when I did Kirks we did the one wheel method, only have to remove 9 bolts, don't have to touch the axle nuts...

Nope, I lost the sleeve on one of those when I pulled the old car apart so I used the links that came with the sway bar. Their sleeve was too short by about a half inch.

Hey Jeff, kids saying you did it wrong..... AGAIN.
So now you say he did the shaft wrong, and the gear swap wrong next thing you know you will say he filled the fluid in there the wrong way. :p

It's ok, I never do anything right, that why my real job is a valet parking dude, hey everyone is entitled to they're own ways of doing stuff, as long as it gets the job done, and in a timely manner.

Jeff

Hey, I'm just a normal guy (not quite right in the head) but, none the less normal, anyone can do what I do including you ;) .

Jeff
Yup, time to go back to teh muffler shop.
Seriously though you had it apart very fast and easy. If it were not for all the distractions and exhaust issue then the gear issue that would have been done in under 6 hours.
Awww come on now Jeff!

I think everyone know you are 1000x the wrench I could ever hop to be...
