headers or manifolds?

I'm needing to do something with my exhaust and i keep flipping back and forth, so i thought that i would get some other peoples perspective. I'm running a kenne bell 2.2 with an auto and 3:55's. I'm trying to decide between headers and cobra manifolds. I have heard that the cobra manifolds flow much better than the marks and i can pick them up for $50 or so and i wouldn't think they would produce as much heat as the headers, which will help the blower. Headers are $850ish from scp(kooks) in 304 and the larger primary's and 3" collectors are another $75.

Does anyone know how well the manifolds really flow?

Are the headers really worth the money?

Seriously, I have the Kooks headers on the '93 and the Cobra manifolds on the '96.

IMHO the headers are better suited for NA and the Cobra manifolds will be just fine with boost when mated to a free flowing exhaust.

I just don't have the boost yet on the '96.

Actually I changed priorities. I postponed the Vortech project and decided to build a garage first.

At least that's the excuse for now. ;)
 
I'd go with headers. In my opinion it's more important on getting air out faster, before being able to take it in.
 
With boosted motors evacuation is imperative. I am running Kooks with 3" collectors and pipes.
 
As I stated on the phone....

Jeremi was running kooks on his 1st eaton powered setup, and didn't like em because of the increased noise. He ended up swapping them out. The cast iron manis are ALOT better at keeping noise down than the kooks. And flow wise I would be willing to bet that the kooks aren't gonna be worth the 800 extra.

I know I wouldn't run em for that ammount.

I agree that is an INSANE amount of money for headers. Personally I'd figure out how to fab a set of cheaper headers to work with my car. You know what they say...where there's a will, there's a way! :)
 
pretty sure you can make cobra shorties work but I dont think they are good for much of a horsepower boost.
 
I recommend going to Kenne Bells website, and read about his dyno testing with stock 03/04 cobra headers and catalytic h-pipe.
 
yes, I've read that before which is why i wasn't overly concerned with headers at first(and the price tag). Like mike and i were talking about though is the fact that KB has no data on the mark viii's which has restrictive exhaust. I guess the real question i have is does anyone know how much better the cobra manifolds are over the mark manifolds. It seems kinda dumb to swap one manifold for the other, but if there better I'm willing to try it. I already have a dual x-pipe and lms mufflers with 2.5" exhaust, but it doesn't seem to act like it flows that well. Just wanting to pick up any extra hp that might be there.

It's worth it IMHO, especially if you can go cat-less.
 
i can delete the latter 2 cats as im not running egr anyway. according to the kb article discussed earlier they say there is no gain to be made, but i'm sure you have seen positive results or you wouldn't advise me in that direction. So the next question is

are there any differences in the cobra exhaust manifolds?

Would a set of 04 marauder(c heads) manifolds be the same/work? cause i know where there is a set for free!
 
Extrude honing is going to put you Right back in the price range of headers. And not worth it anyway. There is something to be said when stock exhausted terminator are putting down the power that they do.

I would expect the shorties to be worth a pretty small gain on an N/A app.. They're designed for size and cost restrictions rather than tuned exhaust scavenging performance gains. But one thing's for sure, they'll flow better. And on a SC car where scavenging takes a back seat to flow, I think they would do well.
 
LSC8, why don't you read the article at KB's site? Just trying to help you avoid an expensive science project.

We are trying to discuss the advantages/pitfalls of cobra/marauder manifolds over stock VIII units, while still thinking about headers.

Kenne Bell's article has nothing about how an VIII's exaust would lend itself to an S/C application. That being said..... I feel jeb should just slap the FREE marauder manifolds I have availible for him on his car and quit being a sissy la la. :p
