Front suspension pictures and questions

right but you were saying to buy oem on all the strut rod bushings which was what i checked into. I've been checking prices and making a list of all the stuff i need.

upper control arms- moog (for some reason rockauto can only get a lh trw)
lower-same
srb-oem
tie rods? moog unless someone says different or oem (haven't checked prices yet)
 
Glad I know not to use moog, I was about to buy them. What's better the SCP polyurethane or the Ford. I know you guys said OEM is better than the moog etc, but is it better than poly?
 
i'll throw you all off now derrik, i use moog ( blues ) everytime i do a front end rebuild and havent had one fail yet! its all a matter of prefference.

the only other ? before i start ordering stuff(i think) I was looking up 97 t-bird w/ 4.6 for the control arms, but i thought i read something about ordering s/c arms. I was also unaware that some had adjustable suspension. So what t-bird specific arms are you guy's ordering?

Roadboss uses them too if I remember right.

You can use the t-bird for LCA's
Uppers you need Mark VIII, if you have/keep your air ride it has the mount for your height sensor.

The ball stud can be removed from the old arm and welded in place on the new unit. I've done this MANY times. Takes a grand total of 10 minutes to do the work.

I've never had a moog unit "fail". Wear out, yes.

I'm at 75000 miles on my moog bushings right now in the 94. And the people out in Colorado know how hard I autocross the thing.

big gears, Big tires, Big brakes, big swaybars, coils....

They don't live an easy life, but have held up fine.

Will do again.
 
If you order the MOOG LCA's (K80053/K80055) from RockAuto ($63.79 ea. - 5%), what you actually get are TRW stamped LCA's with the good sealed, teflon lined ball joints.

I just received this part today.

You would save about 60 bucks for ten minutes work, well worth it.
Got to love that Lincoln tax.
 
Ok, so definitely no moog. No one has spoken up about Supercoupe poly bushings yet. Wouldn't that be better than even oem because they are poly and poly is stronger than rubber?
 
All of the Poly strut rod bushings that I've ever seen, or tried, were too hard. In order for the suspension to work properly, the bushings at both ends of the strut rod need to be somewhat pliable.

Ask what the durometer of the bushings is. My bet is you won't be able to get an answer. Even if you do, it's likely to be 95 Shore A, which IMHO is too hard. It's likely that 75 Shore A Poly would work, but I've never seen anyone make them from that material, nor have I done it myself.

I'm using OEM Ford bushings at both ends of the strut rod. If I thought that something better was available, I'd either buy it or make it.

Your choice.

A few of you mentioned these was something wrong with these strut rod bushings. What makes you guys say that (what am I missing/looking for here?) Thanks:

When my car was up on jackstands I took pics of the front suspension. Jamie pointed out that front strut rod bushings were new on one side and bad on the other. He also pointed out the ball bearing boot was torn and bad on the passenger side. I think in one of the pics something else seems to be missing a bushing entirely but don't know.

I was also curious if I bought a whole new control arm I know it comes with a new ball joint, but does that come with new strut rod bushings as well or is that separate?

I can see the damage in the pic that ford nut put up, but in rippeds' what am I missing that you guys say is bad?
I need to replace one of mine (passenger side), but wanted to figure what to look for in the drivers side as it seems tight and decent?... joy ;)

Look at the DS and the PS pics. The two pics you quoted are both ps.

The DS one is installed right and is mounted flush, the PS one is mounted wrong (backwards).

ah, ok! Chicken(?) I think it was said it was bad on page 1, so I was confused as to which part was. Thanks for the explaination!

I'm pretty sure my drivers side is fine then. It's tight and not mushed out or anything...
I picked up the bushings for the passenger side as the one was spitting out the rubber and it was starting to clunk a bit. Ford actually had them in stock! ~$16 each, I got a good deal I think :)
Now to figure out how to switch them without taking the whole front end apart, lol...
