I was recently going to purchase the magnaflow exhaust kit for $700 and some odd dollars + install when a friend with a 5.0 'stang equipped w/ 40 series flowmasters advised me I could probably get a couple of those (40 series flowmasters) w/ custom pipes fitted by the local exhaust shop for about half the price. The mufflers themselves would only cost about $120-$200 from Summit. Now with the whole idea of "custom" in mind I've had a hard time deciding upon which specific mufflers I should get. I've never heard a LS with exhaust so I have no idea what to look for. I want loud exhaust but not like a junker. I definitely want to surprise people and performance is also very important to me. I'm really interested in finding out what combo will give me the best HP gain. Right now I'm torn between some 40 series or 50 series flowmasters but what about borla and magna? Any other suggestions or comments on this issue? What about some "success" stories with other exhaust jobs on LS's...how does it sound? Thanks in advance.

Agreed, I saw a video clip with an LS with Dynomax Mufflers and it sounded a lot better than Magnaflow or Flowmaster ever could, depending on your preference. It's a lot louder.
 
I did the custom thing - very happy and only $450 in parts

2 x 42443 (flowmaster super 40 muffler) $80.99 each
1 x MAG X-PIPE (magnaflow x-pipe) $89.95
2 x MAG TIPS (magnaflow dual double-rolled tips) $49.95 each
2 x CON PIPES (2.5" piping) $29.95 each
2 x EX-PIPES (2.5" piping) $14.95 each

labour $150.
 
Different web-sites have the Magnaflow tubing at 2.5", but its only 2.25". From reading numerous threads on this (ppl have tried 3" tubing) and thinking about doing the custom exhaust - Quik seems to have the optimum set-up.

Any muffler shops should be able to order the parts Quik listed. Pricing may be different, but probably better value than ordering a Magnaflow, plus you're giving the muffler people (the little guys) more business - which is good.
 
local Meineke shop had all the parts in stock and did all the work. they let me come back in the shop and help...
 
I'd personally advise against Flowmasters for an LS. however, the Dynomax might give it a nice tone, and also take up a little less space underneath.
 
thanks guys...i think I'm going with Quik's setup. I'd love to see a video clip of other LSs with exhaust...I'll be sure to try and post one of mine as soon as its done. now that I think about it...the only video clip I have EVER seen of an LS was Quik's supercharger (which was good enough for me!)
 
I would post a clip of my Magnaflows on my 04, but cant rev the damn engine to get sound out of it while in Park or Neutral. The drive by wire blows and wont let the engine rev up without it being in Drive.

not the drive-by-wire - all stock LSes have a 3000rpm limit in N or P. You can remove it with the SCT XCal2.

My rev limiter is gone in N or P. I had the Torrie remove it. I can rev my car up to 6000 RPM in N or P but it will take about 1.5 minutes to rev the motor up that high. You cant blip the throttle and have the R's jump up with drive by wire. On my 02' I can rev to 6K in 1 second.
 
I have seen 18 to 20 horse gain with the LSKoncepts CAI and Magnaflow exhaust. Would the same gains be possibla with the LSKoncepts CAI and a custom exhaust?
 
Do flowmasters sound good on an LS? I always thought they were best for old pushrod V8 engines
 
the Magnaflow system isnt anything special except for being all stainless. You can copy the same setup with X-pipe and direct flow through mufflers and get the same results.
 
let me know if you go thru wit that Stinkin... i wanna try and mock Quik's custom exhaust too... i wanna know how hard it will be and how it sounds... im not looking for a really loud rumbling sound

The tubing is also bigger.
 
The stock LS exhaust/intake is restrictive as a wall, so putting any kind of 2.5 inch tubing with any kind of mufflers will most likely breed the same amount of hp gain.
 
If you had the option of the Magnaflow exhaust or a custom made exhaust, which would you go with? I know the Magnaflow set-up is more money. BUT it is proven equipement. My BIG problem is the tips. I will have to cut them and weld on an extension to clear my rear ground effects piece.
 
I have a LSE so I had to fab the tips too. I actually installed the factory LSE tips back on, at least for now, that may change. It took some guts to take a sawsall to it but had to be done. The Magna-Flow system is pricey but, when you consider what you get, not really. The system is a really well made, no overlaps, truely beatiful, its a shame to bolt it under the car. The fit is perfect, no worries about the shop getting it right. My only complaint is I wish it was louder, but I think its proper sounding for a Lincoln. I don't think a muffler shop could duplicate the perfection in stainless for less. I got mine for a deal thou, so thats easy for me to say. BTW its a 2.25" system, the websites are wrong, most say 2.5". I called Magna-Flow and gave them crap, they kinda blew me off.
 
So this weekend I bought a 2002 LSE, and within 6 hours it had Flowmaster series 40 mufflers on it. I personally love it. A nice low rumble at an idle, and a nice sound above 3k. Not to much cabin noise on the hiway either. Mine cost about 200. 120 for the muflers and 80 for tips. Labor was free. Friend who welds and fabricates.:) Lucky me. I also found this web site that night. Now there is so much more I want to do to it.

Welcome, I have a 02 LSE as well. You'll love this site.
 
I went to a custom exhaust shop with a list of Quiks parts to get an estimate. I told him I all ready had the 40 series mufflers and the guy kinda looked at me like I was nuts. He was an older guy and advised me the magnaflow brand has always been his choice, bar none. He also pointed out the fact that magnaflow probably spent a long time fabricating the design to fit the LS and topping it would be difficult. Personally I think the guy just didn't want to do the work for the price Quik had quoted. Instead he advised me he could probably get the magnaflow setup cheaper than $765 if i bought it from him and then he would do the work at a discounted price as well. I left him with my cell# and the part# so we'll see what happens. I'm gonna head up to meineke tomorrow (looks like that is where quik got his done) and see what they say.
