Custom Exhaust

By the way Quik...the guy at the custom exhaust shop stressed the fact that he needed to know the part #'s to do the custom job. Any chance you have those for any of the parts you listed, other than the mufflers? Also I think a picture of the setup would be real nice for not only me but alot of the people on this forum. Thanks in advance. You're the man.

any word on the above ?'s quik? I just went to meineke and the guy basically stated my best bet is to buy the magnaflow kit for $760 or whatever, pay $150 for labor, and then if i really want to i can replace the magnaflow mufflers with the 40 series flowmasters. he said labor alone for the custom setup would run me about $450 to fab all pipes to fit right plus the $450 for parts. reason labor costs are so high is cuz the labor is $88 an hour...it takes longer than 2 hours to custom fit and install pipes for a car with such little room, according to him, and he is the muffler guy...lol. now im just gonna try and get the magnaflow kit at a cheaper price and have someone install for about $100-$150...that way there wont be any ?s as to fit/function/quality and if i want more sound i can replace the mufflers for about $200. like they say...you get what you pay for...

sorry for the delay - I'm in Vegas this week......... (working)

yes - I have cats still - and have to pass annual inspections.

Well - my piping is considerably straighter than OE.

I wanted Flowmasters because I wanted a mean sound, and that's what a got, V8 rumbly at idle. I have heard both magnaflow, borla, and Mclaren but were all too quite for me. People who like the magnaflow would think my exhuast is too loud. I also removed the resonators as part of the install.

What i posted are the partnumbers off the work-order - so I am assuming they are internal Meineke part-numbers - not actual aftermarket numbers.

Here's the pics -

I did the custom thing - very happy and only $450 in parts

2 x 42443 (flowmaster super 40 muffler) $80.99 each
1 x MAG X-PIPE (magnaflow x-pipe) $89.95
2 x MAG TIPS (magnaflow dual double-rolled tips) $49.95 each
2 x CON PIPES (2.5" piping) $29.95 each
2 x EX-PIPES (2.5" piping) $14.95 each

labour $150.

I have a few more questions about the exhaust (SORRY! if I'm going to do it, I wanna do it right...lol). Which ex-pipe do you have, magnaflow carries two 2.5" versions, one 9.5" long and one 12" long. As far as the tips I have no idea which one's to use. I'm going to bring the pic of Quik's exhaust to meineke tomorrow, it would just be real nice to know exactly which part #'s for the magnaflow products. Thanks in advance.

p.s. the part # listed for the flowmaster muffler references the following:
Flowmaster 40 Series Mufflers (NOT SUPER 40s) Muffler, American Thunder 40 Series, 2 1/ 4 in. Inlet/ 2 1/ 4 in. (NOT 2.5") Outlet, Steel, Aluminized, Each

Is this rite? I want the SUPER 40s and I'm pretty sure I need 2.5" inlet...

I believe my x-pipe is 12" (goes in place of the resonators) - but either will work

The mufflers defenitally use 2" 1/2 inlet/outlet

These part nujmbers are the best I can read from the local Meineke hand-written workorder - so take it for what their worth.

You want to go to 2" 1/2 from the stock 2" 1/4. Some LS owner that went to 3" actually lost some torgue on the dyno - so it appears the car needs some back pressure.

The stock LS exhaust/intake is restrictive as a wall, so putting any kind of 2.5 inch tubing with any kind of mufflers will most likely breed the same amount of hp gain.
Note that this is only true of the '00-'02 LS. The '03-'06 LS has a very free-flowing exhaust; Magnaflow was only able to pull, at best, an extra 5hp out of the exhaust--that's why they don't offer an exhaust for the '03-'06 LS.

Bump bump bump...So what is going to give you more power? The custom or the magnaflow? I'm up for the power and sound, which I dont know how loud the flowmasters are. I dont want a monster rolling down the road, I just want enough sound the make it sound mean. Quik, you are probably annoyed already but is the custom a better addition?

depends - usually it's a balance between the sound you want and hp you can get.

I believe if most hp is the goal - custom is the only way.

Quik,

Which Meineke did you go to? Since we're both in Austin, I'd like to go to the same place you took yours since that shop has worked on an LS already.

Thanks man.

Ok fool, whoever heard of a rice with Flowmaster 40s. Oh and the meaning of ricer is...a car with no power, but all the looks. Sorry, just thought I'd point out the obvious.

No kidding. 40 Series Flowmasters are made for ANYTHING BUT RICE. I can't wait to slap mine on. Unlike Quik I don't have to worry about emmissions so I'm also thinking of removing the cats or at least hollowing them out. We'll see what happens.

not sure I would pull the cats out - the LS uses high-flow cats so you are not loosing much there.

with O2 sensors before and after the cats - not sure how the LS will react to the missing cat - you may find that the post-cat O2 sensor sees too much fuel (that the cats would normally remove) and start cutting back on your fuel delivery....

Thanks Quik...the guy who keeps telling me to do all this stuff drives a 5.0 stang. If you guys weren't around I'da probably wrecked my car 6 months ago! lol!

Me and you will get along just fine! I'm thinking of just putting the Magnaflow on mine.

I am not sure about the LS but in the mustangs at least (4.6) the rear o2s monitor the cats efficiency. If you hollow out the cats or remove them, the rear o2s will throw a CEL. With a tuner on the mustang we are able to turn the rear o2s off to accomodate the off-road Xs, Hs, or what have ya. I don't have a tuner for the LS, does yours have any setting like this, to turn the rear o2s off?

question: how much more hp will I get with a custom exhaust from the LSe exhaust. I think the LSe exhaust works alright and I dont want to drop too much if it isnt going to give me that much more hp (if any)

remember - an LSE is exactly the same as a regular LS - plus a body kit, exhaust tips and a LSE badge - nothing more - so whatever works on a regular LS works on a LSE.

My exhaust yielded 11rwhp on the dyno - but - I already had my intake and scoop in.

BTW - I though LSE were only V8?

You

The first time I've ever outsmarted Quik!! Yes they made some V6 LSE's but very few. 11 RWHP means...25 or so engine. Am I right?
