I've probably back my car up further than he's driven his forwards (joking smile)

his political "cut and paste" far outweigh any tech he provides, yet he's an EXPERT when it comes to giving advice...

The bladders aren't the real issue with the Air Ride system.
It's the components. It's the vent solenoids. The dryer. The compressor motor and the relays. The plastic lines that can be damaged. Or the o-rings in the systems that dry up and can be disturbed when working on the system. It's also the placement of the system and the way it traps moisture.

In my case, the airbags have been trouble free. I replaced them all with FoMoCo parts and expect to get about 150k miles out of them. The "system" has proven to be unreliable and has resulted in my lack of confidence in the car.

One component does not define a "dependable" system.
The system is the sum of the ALL the parts.
A dependable system would not require aftermarket parts like the Spider Valve inorder to INCREASE it's dependability.

Nor would the biggest selling point of the Spider Valve be the schrader valve, providing a way to air up the system (in some situations) WHEN the system inevitably fails.

If it's a dependable system what would you be procrastinating or denying? A necessary round of service or repair.

Your very statement undermines your point.

if you fix it at FIRST sign of trouble it will last along time.

Yes. When something breaks on this "dependable" system, it's critical that you address it immediately. If not, you will run into MORE problems with this "dependable" system.

The Air Ride is a novelty.
If you have the time to tend to it... and the interest in investing the money in keeping it, it's very cool. But it's NOT dependable. It's trouble prone.

Why would I be inclined to ask questions about a system that I'm already knowledgeable about? Don't bother answer that, it's a rhetorical question. I wouldn't have much reason to.

But in your creepy, stalker-like research, you should have seen that Unity and I actually did have an air ride discussion last winter while I was up North. We've both experience the dryers failing on this DEPENDABLE system when exposed to prolonged freezing weather, resulting in a slammed Mark VIII. That was a problem I hadn't experienced in Florida.

That was the longest 3hr drive home I've ever experienced. Apparently the drive there I still had a little air in the rear, but the drive back was completely bled out. I don't think I can fit a stack of cards under my car.

Ive been stuck on flat ground before when it was like that......i couldnt pull into my parking lot because the 3 inch curb was too high. I would throw sparks if i drove over 25mph. I understand what your saying after all i live in Kentucky!!!! lol not much flat ground here.
 
I recall driving about 100 miles of Pa turnpike once in my 93, about 7-8 years ago with front bags that blew out suddenly-it was an experience I'll never forget.

I bought new bags somewhere (don't remember, but they were about $600 I think) and I took the car to a dealer and had to pay them around $300 I think to install them (ouch) I have since done them on my 96 and a good friend's 94, not hard just a PITA, but I do not think I'd hang with this system too long if it got to relays, pumps, dryers, lines, modules...springs for me if that happens, maybe-but mine is not a DD, so I could change my mind.

I keep 5 inch blocks under my car at jacking points when it sits in my garage, it drops about an inch onto the blocks instead of slamming-keeps it from developing the dreaded cracks where the folds are and I think also helps the pump, since it doesn't run for a long time after startup. That also indirectly has to be good for the alternator, since it doesn't have to satisfy a battery that has been sitting, and the load from the pump. I do like the air ride, but if it were a DD, I know I'd eventually change it out.

Its an old system in an old car, kind of like the 10 disk changer it had that wouldn't play home made CD's, or wouldn't recognize store-bought CD's sometimes-I replaced that with a JVC 12 disk changer and dumped the factory head unit for a JVC that's wired to the 12 disk in the trunk. It's modern and it works as it should. I agree with Tommy, when it works, it is really nice and if you let :q:q:q:q go, you need to identify the problem before it gets a lot worse. but like Calabrio says if it is a basket case, and you use it for a DD, springs are the only way to go. JMO
 
I did this when my compressor went bad, drove across houston haulin ass, was irritated enough just to say F it and get it home.

When you think about it, how old is your car? One update should get you into many more years of air ride enjoyment. I don't think I could ever have a rear passenger or put anything in the trunk with coils. I like a level car. Well, when it's low it's more important to keep it level I suppose.

well said and i agree wholeheartedly.

i almost let my friend convert his car, had the air ride computer not solved the problem it would have been converted

but he did his due diligence and didn't wuss out at the first air ride error and convert to coils, as ive seen many do

a basket case air ride issue, with probable wiring issues..agree'd conversion is an option.

but i'm a decent mechanic and i dont wuss out when the going gets tough.
i'd rather REPAIR than put tbird struts on my car

in the end its up to the owner, and their budget.
nobody can make that decision except the owner of the car themselves.

the whole "AIR RIDE IS NOT DEPENDABLE" BS is just that....BS

I'll burn my car to the ground myself before I convert to coils.
 
I went with coils and struts because my compressor failed, both front bags were shot, driver side ride height sensor was broke and i had just replaced the valve in the drivers side strut......it was a more cost effictive thing for me to do since i didnt have the extra cash to dump into fixing the air ride. After i converted to coils i also found out one of the lines was cracked and both rear bags had been over inflated for quite sometime and had lumps in them. Since i converted i havent had 1 single day of regret and the ride and stance is just what i wanted.

that's called 'cutting off your nose to spite your face'.

If it can be fixed without replacing/throwing parts at it, they last pretty long and are part of the allure of the Mark-but a basket case, or a beat daily driver, you'd have to think all bets are off.
