Catastrophic engine failure???

Oil good and it doesn't look like the oil pan hit anything? I bet your engine is good. I had similar situation happen to a buddies trail blazer. The torque converter went out. However, his engine would still turn over. I think these guys are on the right track with the starter but I'd pull the inspection plate on the bell housing and maybe drain your converter fluid. These engines are pretty tuff. Personally I think one of the best Ford engines every. 200,000 miles on a properly maintained Mark VIII engine aren’t bad at all.

Bellhousing is aluminum so it wouldnt deform, only break.

Doubt the pickup. Its bolted down and the pan is protected. There is no real windage tray to speak of.

These dont jump time. They break chains and guides but timing jumps are reserved for belts and Chevy 4 bangers.

Sapper had a car that hit a man hole cover in the road. Beat the hell out of the k-member but oil pan was left un touched.

Starters are fragile in these cars. Heavy impact could have broken the internals.

Yeah, I figured it was doubtful. Didn't know if it was a press on or bolt on pickup.

The starter is permanent magnet so a hard hit will shatter the magnets, and kill the starter.

Curious to see what he finds out.
 
Laser, I figured you would have kept the Jag? Didn't you order a smaller pulley for it, and a few other things? How's the business coming along?
 
Note: The Lincoln Mark VIII manual is misleading in that in the starter removal section it says to remove the two bolts holding the starter, reinforced by the exploded diagram showing a starter with only two ears - but it really has three bolts, which it explains in the installation paragraph. Also, the exhaust must be dropped out of the way, which the manual makes no mention. Despite a good soaking with WD40, one of the bolt heads broke off.

The starter is out and I'm having it thoroughly bench tested...
 
I've never done one on a mark but I here the snapping is somewhat common. Most leave the bolt out and only use 2 iirc.

P.s. I'm pretty sure the exhuast doesn't have to be dropped, though I could be wrong. I'm dreading this repair if/when it happens.
 
With enough patients and extensions, te top starter bolt can be removed without touching the exhaust. Can you turn the crank with the starter removed?
 
The exhaust can stay.

I use a 10 mm ratchet wrench and a 1/4" socket wrench with between 4 and 6 inches of extensions. The last one I did was a couple months ago and took me about 35 minutes...

There's no way I could have used a 1/4" on seized bolts, especially after breaking one ratchet. Maybe if the bolts come out easily and with a lift you could work around the cat, but in this case the front of the exhaust system had to be dropped. A major PIA.

Any recommendations on the replacement. The old one looked really corroded and an ear broke off when we thought it only had two bolts and put a crowbar to it. So, I'll need a new one anyway.

Are the Gen2's different from Gen1's because I had my Gen1 starter out on jackstands in driveway no exh touching.
 
you still havent said if you can rotate the crank yet. with the starter in it does exactly what? "click" . nothing.does it turn at all using any method, jumping?i had a pcm fuse go under the hood and it did nothing ,too.have you checked all the fuses in engine bay?plus you said you hit fender? the fuel lines/ filter goes through there.
 
That was the side that had the cat replaced with a non-factory piece, so maybe the space was a bit tighter than stock. When I had turned the key last time I checked, it made a loud clunk sound like the motor was locked. No, I haven't turned the crank snout because I need to get the right metric socket - looks like 18mm. Patience, thanks for all the input and sorry for all the suspense, but bear with me.
 
hahahaha calm down guys.

better to wait days the strip the bolt and spend hours that you didnt need to on trying to get the bolt out.

might be a dumb idea, but when you hit the bump could you maybe have knocked the PCM out. just by a slight chance that someone didnt put the screw in all the way and if it fell unplugged it. unlikely but, hey **** happens

Lol..I'm with you, id have a breaker bar on that crank pulley like yesterday making sure its not locked up..and then go from there.

ive done more work from a wheelchair with 4 blown motors than he has in a week with one. what happened to the video you were going to make so we could hear/see what was the noise?
 
You guys are too funny...

OK: I had to go buy a breaker bar and the 18mm socket in question.

The engine turns one way and locks, turn back almost one revolution, locks.

That is with the transmission in neutral. Starter removed.
 
Sounds like a hung valve..... While you could rebuild, easier and cheaper to swap in another engine.
