Can I borrow $57,500?

fords windsor series engine made it's debut in 1962...the LS1-1997. sure they made upgrades to the 302, 351 over the years but in the end it's a 50 year old motor, I wouldn't say the small block chevy is still "modern" even though it was produced all the way up to 2000, there are certain things about it that are just inferior in comparison to the newer LS motor..

I'm sure you will come back with a good argument on fords behalf condisering you're a ford fan, but all i know is I'd take a brand new crate LSX 454 for $14K over a blown mod motor making less power (with a blower mind you) for $21K..or go the easy way out and get a junk yard 6.0, swap heads intake and cam and have an easy 500+hp at the crank for a fraction the cost of either of those options..

Just in case you missed it here is my Mustang. You tell me.:D

I'm not here to get in a blowout just going back and forth. Also the LSX is a great platform not saying its not. My buddy has a 2000 camaro with NA lsx that runs 9.5's on street tires.

I just want to throw this out there again for the $$$ guys.

Brand new 5.0 Aluminator 7300
Brand new Hellion TT kit 8500 HP 1249 for 15,800 You read that right 1249HP

Heh... Mod motor modern? I think not.

4 cams DOHC, all aluminum..... Sound familiar? Other then it's huge...

I do find it amusing how much LSx motors remind me of Ford's Nascar engines...

Ahhhhhh! The good ol' GAA Sherman tank engine. I would love to have one of those. Something like 1300 cubic inches (21.3 liters!!!!!!) and 600hp with 1100 ft-lb torque back in the 1940's when it was new. I've seen one of these in a '69 Mustang drag car. The engine is bigger than the front of the car:eek: It's crazy! I could see possibly putting one of these engines in a Ford Super Duty pickup with a little front end modification...okay a LOT of modification:D But that is one bad a$$ engine! The funny thing is that it was a 60-degree V design instead of 90-degrees like modern V-8 engines. But it was DOHC with 32 valves just like our engines. Too bad Ford didn't downsize it for regular production back then.

ah yes, I have seen this pic before, impressive! I'll give you that, I love my mark viii, but I would never waste my time trying to build up the DOHC 4.6, I would go the route you went with your mustang..maybe not to this extent..I know your a pretty efficient budget minded kind of guy, what did it cost you to build that motor if you don't mind me asking? Those look like some expensive heads on there what's the port size? the primaries on the headers look massive for a small block, and I assume that dominator isn't just for show! lol

That's because it was originally a V12 for aircraft. When war broke out, there were better aircraft engines available so Ford lopped off 4 cylinders and the GAA was born.

LOL SB pffft.:) The heads are full CNC Dart Pro1 355's its 555CI. The primary tubes are 2 1/4 dia! One tube is same size as complete mk8 exh.

Yep. I forgot about that. The military was more interested in a good V-8 for their tanks since they already had radial engines for their aircraft at the time. They did bring back the 700hp 1650cid V-12 for some prototype tanks but it never went into regular production. Now I'd love to see one of those up close and personal!

Oh I thought I remember you saying you built a stroker motor based off the 351, I figured it had some exotic cylinder heads and intake..now come to think of it it doesn't look like a windsor head at all, is it a 460 block?

IDK if anyone read the article Saturn5 posted with the pic, but it mentioned the tank crews removing the governors from the engines, which rang true with the stories my grandfather used to tell me about being a tank driver in WWII. He said after a tank mechanic told him how to remove the governor, he would take it out and leave it out all the time (which was not SOP), and, as a result, burnt up more than his fair share of engines, but he would always reinstall the governor after they had blown. He said his superiors would chew him out over the blown engines, but they never figured out what he was doing. He was one of the best tank drivers in his outfit and would volunteer to take missions no one else wanted, and I guess it was because of that they let him test a prototype tank at the end of the war. He said it had 2 500 hp engines and would go through pretty much anything. I have no idea what it was beyond that, though.

The new set up is 555 Big Block CHEVY! Notice no distributor in front?

Sacrilege!!!!

:D

LOL I was same way for longest time but as you get older you thoughts change. I always wanted a Big block Ford but could not afford throwing cash out the window since buying house. Said and done I got 930HP engine for 5500.

I can understand. But I'm a Ford guy and I always will be. Out of 40+ vehicles I've owned, only two were not either Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury. And I had a 1971 model 365hp 500ft/lb D0VE-C head 10.5:1 compression 460 out of a Lincoln Continental sitting under my grandpa's shed that I was going to put in something someday...until somebody STOLE IT!!! It only had about 70k miles on it too:( That was a sad day...

Let me ask you this ?. You have a complete running drag stang with a SBF. You find a deal on a BBC that new costs 15000 and can get it for 5500. What would you do? Also said and done there is not one real chevy part on this engine.

Oh wow I don't know how I didn't notice that, the sheetmetal valve covers are throwing me off, makes sense now why the brodix intake looked Chevy to me..

all you have to do is look at hylands website and add the parts, some are insane and custom made, 7g for heads, 1000 for reground cams, whole billet longblocks for 20,000. heslying through his teeth. ive spoketo sean, hell speak to anyone happily and give info to anyone but i doubt hed charge 47g for a motor

There is no Ford Windsor series, the only Windsor is the 351W.The LS1 is nothing but a 302 and 4.6 all merged into one. That's GM they can't come up with something new.Even the old Chevy is resembles the Y-block.

I rather have the guy at Accufab john mihovetz build me a 4.6 (if I had the money). He's used stock cobra block, crank and highly ported b heads and is making 2000 + hp.Try that with stock LS parts!. Plus a 4.6 will probably last longer then a LS as I seen plenty of 300.000 + mile 4.6 sitting in the junkyard. Plus I rather put the money into a Mark VIII then a newer ugly ass Camaro! :D

I've driven around with some healthy horses. Not really strong but 500+ and 580 or so ft/lbs. You do not want this for a daily driver. It's fun but on a rainy day you have to be careful. You do not get decent mileage.

This is what I would like for daily power:

Sheer elegance in a straight up motor. Quick response and a a flat torque curve.

How do you figure they copied off of anything..its called doing your research on what works and what doesn't, they took the basic design of the original small block and made improvements to the block to strengthen it and redesigned the cylinder heads big time along with numerous other things.

I call it working smarter not harder, if I were to want to build a 500hp street motor I would go for a budget LS, SBC, or SBF over anything else, I don't give a :q:q:q:q if its been done a million times before..there's a reason for that, because its the best bang for your buck..now if you're just stubborn because you love Ford so much and want to blow your money on a 4.6 trying to get the same amount of reliable power out of it then go for it..its not that I don't like fords, I just think there are much better motors out there to start with than the mod motors..but hey if you have money to burn have fun with it.

You cannot compare a 4.6 engine to a 6.0 engine. Also 4.6 are not known to make huge power on nut like LS engines. 4.6's shine when boosted. If you want a real large HP your are going to have to step to the plate with both ls and mod engine and force induction.
