So I have this concern, but nothing to compare it to.

I just had the breaks on my Mark done. New front rotors and ceramic pads.

When I slam on the breaks, I keep rolling. Even at low speeds. Other Ford cars I've had, when I slam the breaks, the tires lock and skid and the ABS kicks in.

When I slam the breaks in my Mark, the pedal hits the floor, the wheels dont lock or skid (they keep rolling) and the ABS does not kick in.

Breaks seem to work fine and stop well for normal driving, its just when I jam them on (like I would if a kid ran out in front of the car or something).

Any suggestions?
Is this a known or common problem? Did my mechanic miss something?

Any help would be SUPER appreciated.

That car should have semi mettalic pads. Also there may be air in the system. Try driving around the block and gently hold the brakes, dont get them red hot but like you just made some highway stops. This may also help. It sounds like air or you're mechanic didn't clean the rust inhibitor stuff off the rotors. Talk to him if the gettin them warm don't help.

I'd say it's gotta be air in the lines....I've had both metalics and ceramics both give the abs studder when you slam em, but always have stopped....if your pedal is going to the floor, i'd say air - jm2cs

Just a thought try checking the brakes. I'm not sure what the breaks do but I'm pretty sure they have nothing to do with stopping the car.

It's easy, Rich, if your BRAKES do not work properly, it can BREAK something if the vehicle comes in contact with a stationary/moving object. But, I think you NEW that...:D

Thanks for the suggestions.

I had new pads, new rotors put on. Let them "break-in" for a couple hundred miles. Brought it back to the shop once already and they said they bled the lines. She stops fine for normal driving. Only problem is when I slam them. The car stops, but not the way I expect (no tire screetching, no abs shudder).

I have a 96 Cougar (and anyone who knows these cars knows they have small breaks for the weight of the car) and that car stops better than the Lincoln. I can only assume something is wrong.

Could this be a problem with the master cylinder?

I need suggestions to go back at my shop with.

:slap:

Yes it is possible the master cyl could be the problem but I would try bleeding them again before throwing $$$ and parts at it. Air in the lines is the most probable cause and just because the shop said they bled the brakes doesn't mean they got all the air the may be in the system out.
