1997 Evergreen/Ivory Progress

Started a 3 day thrash to get this system installed. 2 different Y-pipes had to be fabricated to allow the system to be ran like I wanted.

We still have to run the rear portion of the system, but as it sits.....it looks like it's gonna be a sucessfull install.

We make oval tube where I work. I think it's 3.5 though, .070 wall. I'll have to check. What wall is that Mike?
 
Interesting! But doesn't the oval tube still act as a single exhaust? Look's good tho!
I may be mistaken; if i am, someone please correct me.

the goal is flow capacity (flow volume); vol = area (3.14 x radius^2) x length ; mix in velocity of the fluid/gas and you get flow volume (___cubic feet per second)

Mike's custom oval tube is probably > or = the two 2.5" cylinders combined (dual pipes)...

Mike, why did you replace the heads that were on the mark's motor? are the Conti's low mileage? do any 4.6 32v heads fit our Marks?
 
The only thing that matters on the exhaust is the area of the circle or in this case the oval (eclipse) the total volume (length) would only matter if the exhaust was exceptionally long that didn't allow acceptable flow or in engineering terms was non linear. In a standard car this should never be a issue. More common with port design for sub boxes where the tuning requires a longer port to obtain the desired freq, when the total volume of the cylinder is more than x time the volume of movement of the speaker you end up with an epic fail.. Lol. Not so much with exhaust... Although you do see it from time to time with semi's that run 8 or 10" stack. At slow idle the exhaust hardly makes it out of the stack.

Oval vs round tube. The math 3.14x2.125x1.125=7.51 Vs. 3.14x1.56=9.81
That's the quick math in my head anyway... It's been a long day
Dual 2.5 would flow a little more but unless you are running massive power you would never need anything bigger than the oval he has. Not to mention it looks kick azz and if it cuts down on the drone I'm in for sure. I'm guessing total weight is less also.
 
Its substantially less weight than the old system. This is also only 3.5" the 4" is quite a bit larger.
 
You'll have to let me know how it sounds when you get it out on the road. It looks great!
I wonder how it would sound with my cams in the new motor.

Hold on a second Mike! You said it was "2.25 X 4.25 X .070 wall". The stuff I make is...2.38 X 3.95 X .070 wall. This sounds like it will work to me! Does it sound like that to you? What does 3.5" mean? I don't see it any where, but I'm an old guy.....please explain. I like the look's of this!

From what I've seen most places put a round equivalent to the oval tube. I'm sure the dimensions vary based on how they get from round to oval.

Finally able to get it back on the hoist and snap some pictures of the rear portion.


In other news,

After 25+ hours my cylinder heads are done. Every square inch of the ports have been smoothed to 80 Grit, intake has been port matched, Short radius in the intake has been cleaned up and valves are ready to drop in. I'm very pleased with how they turned out and am looking forward to my next set.

Once they come back from decking and cleaning, I'll put them back together and seal them in bags to wait for my short block. I'm hoping to have this done for next spring driving season.

Now I'm looking at options to get a wood shifter knob to go with it.
 
Small update.

May not look like much, but it'll give you an idea of how I'm feeding the Hot side of the new turbo setup.


Got the 409 Stainless filler wire on order and the Argon, and Nitrogen back purge ready to go as well. As soon as my left arm is healed fully, it's on like Donkey Kong.


The new welder is here too. Thermal Arc 220A MIG, TIG, and stick welder. This is where most of the recent project funds went to. (that and consumables).

Yes, It'll go Kirk.

Custom Motor mounts, steering shaft, and some relocation of the oil filter and coolant outlets, I'll be able to cram a 3.5" down pipe in there.
