My 1997 Continental had to have a stabilizer bar joint replaced last year and it was clunking just like yours when going over bumps. The part was $60 and it cured it instantly. I can find the part number if you need it. The part that was replaced was on the drivers side rear.
rear height
This 97 conti stays high in the rear as the air bags are still functioning normally. I dont notice any driving problems except for the headlights pointing down. I was hoping there was a ride adjustment setting somewhere.
I dont understand why my continental sits high in the rear. The air bags are fine, the sway bar is secure. but the car sits about 5 inches above the tire and is throwing my headlights down so far that I cant see well at night. Is there an adjustment for this elevation and if so where is it?
1997 Conti is running smooth as glass. Idles like new and accels with power. I've replaced 3 Oxygen Sensors but I am getting conflicting advice from various garages including Ford. Ford says Cat Convertor is bad, a different garage has told me to replace the 4th O2 sensor. I've just turned 219k...
Where is a good place to mount my XM Roady2 inside my 1997 Continental? Right now I have the antenna on top of the front dash and the antenna wire is running in the dash crevice to the door then down under the dash and around to the radio console area. The XM radio receiver is attached to the...
Is there a test to find out if my CPS is bad. My car has moments of cranking but not starting . It doesnt happen every time and mostly if its sat outside in the cold for a few hours. all night in the garage or just driving it, and it starts fine. CPS = Crank Position Sensor.

I had the same shudder experience and also could make it go away by gently letting off the accelerator then pressing forward slowly. I changed the fluid and filter, but the problem got worse. The problem was my AX4N transmission. After having it replaced, the problem was solved.

My 1997 Linc Continental needs a Transmission. Ford Dealership sells remanufactured AX4N floor shift for $1734 and comes with 36 months/75,000 mile parts/labor warranty. Anyone out there ever put these tranny's in their Linc Conti's and are they dependable? thanks:)
repair cost update
Jasper engine and transmissions has given me a quote over the phone for my transmission: AX4N comes with 3 year/ 75,000 mile non prorated warranty. $2922 includes the $650 core/skid fee bringing it down to $2272. They rebuild the tranny with upgraded parts superior from the...
Transmission overhaul question
My Trans problem is calling for an overhaul for sure now. . . it is more than a shudder as it actually slips going into second gear now. . . however, letting up on the gas allows the gear to shift into second and all is well for the ride to Walmart. A trans...
shudder in 1st gear only. . but sometimes its ok and shifts right into 2cd with no hint of a problem. . .changed filter and fluid and added shuddergone additive. . .
if you have had this 1st gear shudder and solved the problem, please leave me a post. or if you have had your transmission...
The electrical system on a 97 Linc Continental can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. I had a problem with mine this year, but I solved it. My first symptom was a red battery light coming on a lot. Sometimes for a few seconds, but often staying on for the whole trip. I discovered that the...
Mine makes noise so irregularly that I hate to even mess with it. Sounds like a groaning when turning right, but only happens sporadically and usually always within minutes of starting up.
