98 lsc perl jax progress thread

Fine I can't spell but I did ask some questions about droping the transmission... Threads about I can and will do this myself I can read and do have the correct literature... If you do not want to help me whith my project please do not make fun of my learning disability I do use spell check and I see the words as right! I will fix my car.. I do have another vehicle to drive.. Any help is still much appreciated.

Hey they are not doing it to you just cause, everyone gets it so lighten up and don't take it so personal.

As for rebuilding a trans this is not something to learn on by yourself. This is something to do with someone who has done it over and over. Not saying you can't do it I think it is a case of not doing it without someone that has the knowledge themselves.

I do not know how much money you spent on the parts and books but in this case if you go it alone you might just end up spending it over and over again. Get the right help and learn but I think if you are going this alone you are biting off more than you can chew.

you do not want to do it twice. been there, done that in my ranger. just pull the transmission, take it to your favorite garage, and pick it up a few days later.

pics old news but....

Yeah they do that sometimes. I gave sapperfire my old pumpkin so he could just put one together to slap in his 93 but after pulling it apart both sides bearings were severly over heated and even dammaged the housing.

today i got the differential back together, dismantled the transmission and found some parts that are bad. it only took me about an hour to get it apart. tomorrow i am going to a transmission parts place.

Take a picture of all of the guts in that trans, the snap rings and all... Nits an intimidating picture.

yup about the same, a little bit more electronics in mine. but mine is in order disassembled on a bench. hopefully minimal distractions tomorrow (getting a new mark for her) to get my transmission together and installed.

the a4ld in my ranger has pretty much the same parts but i could not get the damn thing to work.
it is however a seriously crappy transmission.

good luck.

WE are really just saying that unless you plan on rebuilding more than just one transmission that it is not worth spending all the money on all the special tools all the time it will take to make sure you get it right. I have my car completely ripped apart, my tranny was completly toast, so i decided to rip it apart regardless knowing i am not going to get it fixed, i didn't get very far before i need a special tool.

As far as getting it out. first off i would run the car till there is little to no gas in the tank. Go underneath the car there are what i believe ( it has been awhile) 13 mm maybe 14 mm bolt that hold two straps that hold the gas tank up. I would suggest dropping the passenger side down, then unhook the gas lines and the fuel pump connector. you may need the ford gas line tool, not 100 percent sure about that. after the gas tank is out you might as well replace the pump seeing as you have the tank off.

after the tank it out your next step will be to remove the exhaust, i have no clue what size the bolts are seeing as i cut mine off because i had no use for it.
after the exhaust is out you will need to take off the bolts on the drive shaft, i know it is a special torque bolt, but a 12 point socket, i think 12 or 13mm will work. after you pull the shaft out then you can work on the trans bolts, i think there is a plate that you take off to get to the tc bolts, they are a pain in the ass, no lie. After all this there are special tricks at getting bolt off, hoever i am no the one to tell you seeing how i dropped the whole k-member to do this

well never mind, i didn't see the second page. looks like your progress is going quite well, did you do a gear swap to some taller gears?

Well he's already dropped the transmission and got it dismantled. No special tools so far, but did have to modify some tools. It worked and didn't break anything, so no harm no foul. Everythings going good the car should be back together soon.

ok she is all dun. in the end i now have a built 4r70w with the j-mod up to the 3rd stage, 1-2 accumulator spring removed (a bit harsh might put it back in)track lock is now installed as-well as my 93 driveshaft. i had it in and out a total of 4 times. the first one it made a whining noise in revers 1st 2nd but was silent in 3rd and 4th. we took it back out checked everything, nothing wrong.did the same one more time same result. my dad and i took it to a guy here in jacksonville he disassembled it and found no problems, but he did warranty out the torque converter. she is quiet . my dad and i had it all put back together and it worked, he and i will fix another one. the only thing that we did not do is try the torque converter. i am happy with what i saved on doing this my self and would do it again. but i will probably put the 1-2 spring back in. i am glad to have my car back. AND NO I HAVE NOT BIN WORKING ON IT THIS WHOLE TIME LOL.
