I finally got fed up with the big faded splotches on the top of my car. Everything is shiny black, except the roof. I done my front bumper cover back in 07 and today I got in the mood for the roof. It's almost complete now. I'm keeping the garage heated tonight for some finish up work tomorrow. So far, so good! No more splotches on the top but none of these pics show the proof yet. Will post them tomorrow. It has now been DA'd, primed, wet sanded, dried, painted and the clear is next. It's looking like a different car again.

terry let me re-clear the whole car after you are done and add some deep purple metal flake ontop of the black!

Free?? I'll letchya lol but I want purple and blue pearl lightly. Can you hook me up?

Stack, those spots are so damn annoying, especially when everything else is so clean. I couldn't take it anymore so I took action.

RedCellSix, thanks!. Will have the finished pics to show tomorrow.

Give me a walk-through on this and I'll get right on it. Crap... didn't know the clear-coat peal could be fixed. I'm guessing you take a can of clearcoat and spray the pre-sanded area and resand then polish?

I wished it was that simple. The paint has to be sanded down to remove any of the peeling clear coat. I used 2 different DA sanders. One had a dust catch bag and that one was used for the start. It was taken down to the primer for the most part but did have some bare metal (quarter size) showing in a few spots. Wiped the dust off with micro fiber rag and then came through with a tack rag. I put 2 lite, and then a medium coat of primer on and when dry, I wet sanded that with 400 grit by hand and a spray bottle. The initial sanding was done with 180 grit with the 6" DA. After wet sanding the primer with 400, it turned out slicker than I thought it would. After getting that done, I dried everything off with 2 or 3 micro fiber rags and then came back again with a new tack rag. Then I used acrylic enamel and went with 2 lite coats and let dry 10 to 15 min in between coats. I came back through with a medium to thick coat which finalized the cover. That dried for about 45 min to an hour. Once that was done, I used acrylic enamel "crystal clear".

It will set all night and then be wet sanded tomorrow sometime with 2000 grit paper to slicken things out a little. I took a few pics of it after being dried for a few hours but remember, it's not finished yet. Looks a hell of a lot better than what it did. Now it won't be as embarrassing getting out somewhere in a car with big huge spots on top, outlined in white crackly clear coat.

Now, this job cost me under $40 because just for a test, I used Dupli Color spray paint, clear coat and primer.

2 cans of primer
2 cans of acrylic enamel gloss black
2 cans of acrylic enamel clear coat
2 packs of tack rags but used only one for all but used a microfiber rag for most of the dust wipe up. I backed it out first so it could be blown down with some PSI.
1 roll of 25 X 10 3.5 mil plastic and covered the car completely just how I needed it covered.
Yes, I could have used a spray gun but I just had to see how it would turn out, so I went this route. Cheap, bored as hell and felt like doing something. Compared to what it was, I love it. Tomorrow, I'll like it better. Might not be a professional job but I bet it will last just as long. Right at $40 and maybe 5 hours of slow work to finally see black up there again. Garage kept and not brought out much, especially in rain, i think it should last a while. Dupli Color has most any color you need and it will match unless you're faded. Ok, come with the laughs and comments lol

looks like a great spray bomb job. my car has the same cancer looking crap on the hood, front bumper cover, and roof. i might be heading the same route you did. Great job, can't wait to see what it looks like it in the sunlight

Wish I had a Da Sander to use. Only thing I got lying around is an orbital. I wonder if I could use a drill with a foam sanding pad. hmm

How did the seals around the windows turn out without using pull back tape?

Seals all look good. If you can control a DA up on it's edge long enough to rough it, that works. I also double taped any areas that might be hit with the DA.

I done my bumper cover with a spray gun in our other garage that had block walls. Same routine except wetting the walls and floor down to stop the dust. Be careful with your hood and this maybe just me and I'm sure many others that know our hoods compositions, the spray can might not be the route you wanna take on that part. It would work but only sand the paint if possible and leave as much of it as you can, especially the primer. Yeah, the lighting last night was not even close to what it was yesterday while the sun was out. I just got up so I haven't even touched it yet.

Have a Harbor Freight in town? If so, go there! Cheap stuff and if it breaks, take it back for a new one. The DA is orbital too, just 6" round.

Looks good!!

Thanks KK, when I get my lazy azz up, I'll get it finished and take some final pics of it.

Laser, it's only a fender on your car that's off and Dupli Color might have an exact match for you. I seen so many, and I know I did see one that looked your color but I didn't catch the color name. I had black on my mind and then getting the other things. The plastic came from a Dollar General grocery store type place. 25' long 10' wide for under $8.00 a roll. I got 2 of them but one roll done it.

Thanks nolimit but I am anal and impatient, I will screw it up. Plus I have no garrage now. :(
Its ok, just spoke with my body shop and they are fixing the bumper, repainting the fender and headlight trim, removing the 4 small dents on the rear, pulling all 28 dings and color blending it for $1000 all together. I have an appointment for the 16th and pick it back up on the 18th. I will have to rent a car and am currently trying to find the cheapest place. Enterprise wants $54 a day and somehow that came up to $198
Should look great when its done. Then it will be exactly what I always wanted in a Mark except for no moon roof.

Maybe you can make that your next project Laser. Find a moon roof on ebay in working condition and take it to a customizing shop and have it put in along with the factory switches. The place that tints my windows puts them in and I asked when I was down there last time getting the new rear window tinted if I were to bring in my own moon roof, would they install it and he said the only way they would is if it was made for the car. Jamie would probably hook you up with one for a decent price if you could talk him into removing one lol

Come on Jamie, what's a round about quote for the entire moon roof assembly? Switches, motor and all?

My picture host is down again. idk what their deal is lately. The roof is looking pretty good compared to.....what it did look like. I'll do it again with a real spray gun when I do the hood. I just wanted it to look decent for now and for under $40, I'm happy with it. Everything is curing right now and I'll do some final touch up's, then get some pics of it.

i have a complete 97-98 factory moon roof on top of my office. and the 98 i have in the shop now has a factory one too, all the wiring and everything is in it!!

There ya go Laser. Get it now and when the funds start flowing from the new job, have it installed this coming spring. Just because yours didn't have one from the factory doesn't mean it can't have one and I know how bad you wanna have one in yours.

above the headliner is still the same, the frame will bolt right up in there. you just have to have someone cut the hole in the right spot!!

Alright Jamie, he's gonna want to know the price next. PM the man a deal. We don't have to know what you charged him. I'd give mine away but then I would have a hole. I like mine because it was less for me to sand and paint up there. Never fades either.

I couldnt justify that kind of cost. By the time I got the headliner and all it would be well over $1000. Ill just pretend the roof is stronger without it.

If I were ready to repaint my car yes I would.... I'd have no problem welding up the hole and putting in the different headliner...

Damn, the ideas just keep coming. I have a black headliner in mint condition from the 93 with no moon roof setting in the garage covered in plastic. Fill the hole with something sturdy, weld it in, smooth it down, primer, paint, clear and it's gone. Might just do it if mine ever gives me any problems cause I could care less if it's there or not.
