Give me a walk-through on this and I'll get right on it. Crap... didn't know the clear-coat peal could be fixed. I'm guessing you take a can of clearcoat and spray the pre-sanded area and resand then polish?
I wished it was that simple. The paint has to be sanded down to remove any of the peeling clear coat. I used 2 different DA sanders. One had a dust catch bag and that one was used for the start. It was taken down to the primer for the most part but did have some bare metal (quarter size) showing in a few spots. Wiped the dust off with micro fiber rag and then came through with a tack rag. I put 2 lite, and then a medium coat of primer on and when dry, I wet sanded that with 400 grit by hand and a spray bottle. The initial sanding was done with 180 grit with the 6" DA. After wet sanding the primer with 400, it turned out slicker than I thought it would. After getting that done, I dried everything off with 2 or 3 micro fiber rags and then came back again with a new tack rag. Then I used acrylic enamel and went with 2 lite coats and let dry 10 to 15 min in between coats. I came back through with a medium to thick coat which finalized the cover. That dried for about 45 min to an hour. Once that was done, I used acrylic enamel "crystal clear".
It will set all night and then be wet sanded tomorrow sometime with 2000 grit paper to slicken things out a little. I took a few pics of it after being dried for a few hours but remember, it's not finished yet. Looks a hell of a lot better than what it did. Now it won't be as embarrassing getting out somewhere in a car with big huge spots on top, outlined in white crackly clear coat.
Now, this job cost me under $40 because just for a test, I used Dupli Color spray paint, clear coat and primer.
2 cans of primer
2 cans of acrylic enamel gloss black
2 cans of acrylic enamel clear coat
2 packs of tack rags but used only one for all but used a microfiber rag for most of the dust wipe up. I backed it out first so it could be blown down with some PSI.
1 roll of 25 X 10 3.5 mil plastic and covered the car completely just how I needed it covered.
Yes, I could have used a spray gun but I just had to see how it would turn out, so I went this route. Cheap, bored as hell and felt like doing something. Compared to what it was, I love it. Tomorrow, I'll like it better. Might not be a professional job but I bet it will last just as long. Right at $40 and maybe 5 hours of slow work to finally see black up there again. Garage kept and not brought out much, especially in rain, i think it should last a while. Dupli Color has most any color you need and it will match unless you're faded. Ok, come with the laughs and comments lol
