So Im coming home from work last night, about midnight. I am in the left lane doing a leisurely 75mph or so, and a little Focus comes up to my back bumper. There is traffic in the right two lanes so I cant get over right away. Evidently this wasnt good enough as the little Focus starts flashing his high beams, and tailgating even more.
My first reaction was to tap the brakes a couple times but this knucklehead doesnt figure that one out. Then I said "Oh what the H***", Overdrive off, foot to the floor I did a third gear pull up to about 110, and then let it coast back down. When I get back to about 80 I see the little focus coming up again, and this time I decided he WAS NOT going to do a ricer fly-by on me....foot to the floor...BYE BYE. He got off at an exit instead of trying another pass. Its nice to have some power under your foot when you need it.

Nice!

I wish the cops would pull tailgaters over and give them tickets.:)
It must not be as profitable as speeding tickets.

Tailgaters are idiots. I see them all the time. They are constantly hitting their brakes. They are so close to the car in front that when it slows down just a little bit, they have to brake instead of just letting up on the gas a bit. That causes the car behind them to brake and you end up with traffic speeding up and slowing down more than it needs to.

Idiots, all of them.

There's a michigan driver for ya... You guys are lucky you dont have to drive in dearborn everyday.

did you forget he was in the left lane, he was in the wrong. The left lane is for passing if you are not passing or a faster car comes up on you move the f over I wouldn't tail gate ever if slower traffic would move to the right as the law states

I drive in EAST Dearborn everyday, but I can only hand out tickets in Detroit, but even thats pointless when no-one has a license.

I was passing in the left lane, evidently it wasn't fast enough for the tool behind me even though it was obvious I couldn't move right over due to traffic.

It's funny how our cars can run with most stock lt1 camaro's and v8 stangs on the highway, yet are neck and neck with most newer mini vans from 0-40 mph lol.

time for gears haha.

Sorry to pull this back up but in my search for something completely unrelated this came up in the search. I just couldn't believe the op doesn't get why the guy was pissed. I swear everytime I come across people pulling that crap I can't even fathom what is going through their head......now I know!

Where I grow up if someone is going faster than you, move over! If you can't move over because there is traffic, then increase your speed to get over. Don't hold the person up that is in the proper lane trying to pass! DEFINITELY DON'T TAP YOUR BRAKES BECAUSE YOU GOING SLOW IN THE FAST LANE IS YOU BEING IN THE WRONG, NOT HIM! THEN FOR YOU TO INCREASE TO 110MPH TO SHOW HIM WHAT'S UP!!!!???? Maybe if you would have sped up a little bit in the first place to allow him to pass you wouldn't have to "show him up"!

You sir fail, and are one of those that cause people to have road rage!

There is absolutely no reason if your already doing 75 that you should have to speed up because someone wants to break the law even more.

Just because people call the left lane the "fast" or "passing" lane doesnt mean that you should cater to every moron that wants to do 30+ over the speedlimit.

Your saying "your in the wrong for not moving over in the fast lane"....hello! he was doing 75 already... does that mean if someones doing 100 in the fast lane, and someone comes up behind them doing 120, they should move out of thier way, how about 140, 160, is it ok to go that fast and just let the guy "go pass" and move over because he "has somewhere to go"...

Really champ?! In most states it is "THE LAW" that slower traffic keeps right. That doesn't mean what you deem slow, it means if someone is going faster than you, GET THE F OUT OF THE WAY! Gasp, what a hard concept to grasp!

See we have laws in place like speed limit laws etc because there are too many people on the roads that are clueless on how to drive, how to give right of way, how to be courteous...so these laws are put in effect because of the few that can't seem to wrap their minds around this whole driving thing.

To answer your question about the 100+mph thing YES! Get the f out of the way, or atleast put your signal on and let the guy know you see he wants to go faster than you, so as soon as you can you'll get over. 9 times out of 10 if a person is tailgating you, put your signal on to let them know you are planning on getting over and they will back off.

It's the self involved scumbags that feel they can police the street and hold traffic up that deserve a gigantic backhand!

I guess in your mindset 75mph is fast enough for you.....so if that person that thinks 65mph is fast enough for them stays in the left lane is that ok? That's how gridlocks and traffic jams start!

How about this....70mph is the speed limit on Florida highways, so if you were going 75mph, that means you are going only 5mph over the speed limit. That's nothing and I guarantee the majority of people on here are driving more than 5mph over the speed limit.

Hopefully me holding your hand through this process called analytical thinking helped a bit!

I just let the guy go by when I get the chance, I'm not putting my wife and kids at risk. Now my wife, I have to tell her all the time to move over. She thinks like her dad and says that as long as she does the speed limit she is in the right, and her old man scares the hell out of me when he drives. It's just not worth losing a life or your MarkVIII.

Here in Texas its the law that the left lane is passing only as well. Of course heavy traffic negates that law. That lane IS NOT FOR SPEEDING, it is to pass others that may be traveling UNDER the LIMIT.
Now I am usually driving over the limit by 10-15 mph and if I see someone come flying up my ass doing 100 in a 70 then I will move over as soon as its safe to do so. I wont speed up and put myself at a greater risk so he can drive faster. I have decided what level of fine I am willing to pay and dont want it to go to the level of a fine AND a car siezed or license suspended. But thats just me.
I have been stuck in that lane once too but the guy behind me was a dick and I still wanted to kill him. It was freezing and raining out, bad combo. I was on a section that was 60 MPH and I was driving just over 70. The middle two lanes were packed and really I wanted to slow down but not to the 45mph they were doing. This giant Dodge Turbo Ram flys up my bumper almost rear ending me. I see this and hold my speed and put on my signal to move over but traffic just would not clear and I would have had to slow to 40 to change lanes. IMO that would have been more dangerous with the way that ass hat was driving so I held speed. It was way too dangerous to go faster so I waited for an opening, took maybe 50-60 seconds. I get over and this ass hat nails it and swerves over like hes gonna hit me.... that pissed me off.
I aint gonna say what I did for a few reasons but I am confident he wont drive like that anymore, at least not in that truck. ;)

Hummm....one guy is doing the speed limt in the left lane.
One guy is speeding......I don't think it's to hard to figure out who will get the ticket ;)

Ram rodding somebody who is passing slower traffic....just not fast enough for your taste is a good way to get your a$$ kicked IMHO.

That's where I would put my turn signal on so the guy knows I'm going to get over as soon as possible.

I'll tell you this, I watch people pass (and this is especially apparent in one lane roads) and sometimes they are BARELY going over the speed limit to pass. On a one lane road I've seen many times where they almost hit people in oncoming traffic because they are too scared or just plain dumb to put the pedal to the floor, so they endanger everyone's lives! If you pass, you should have the pedal to the floor, if you are driving fast on a highway but someone is coming up on you fast, either get over and let him pass or signal that you plan on getting over asap.

It all boils down to consideration. I know many will say it's inconsiderate to get on someone ass, but put this in a different situation. If you are walking through the mall at your own pace and someone is coming up faster than you, would you be self involved and stay in the same place or would you be courteous and let them go by you? I would let them go by because that would be ignorant to hold them up because "I" feel like going slower.

I've had situations where in inclement weather people would be going slow in the passing lane, then finally when they get over they increase their speed by 20mph (and one guy went from 55mph all the way to 100mph) just to try to teach me a lesson I guess. It's so stupid! If the guy would have sped up in the first place I wouldn't have been tailgating him or flashing my lights at him.

Yes laser there are situations where you can't just throw yourself in the right lane, as I said that's what a signal is for so he knows you intend to get over. If he tailgates you after you have you signal on letting him know you plan on getting over then he deserves a brake check!

That's what's wrong with the world these days is everyone can't mind their own business. Who the F do these people think they are that hold others up because they are trying to regulate their speed. If someone did that to you in the mall or grocery store you'd likely level that person or atleast start saying stuff to them. I sure as hell know I'll say stuff to people who don't have the common courtesy to be mindful of the people around them. These are usually the same scumbags that will throw their door into your car, park halfway into your spot, pull out of a parking lot and go 10mph when you are going 50mph so you have to practically lock up the brakes to not hit them.

People are just really dumb today!

You're kidding right? Why would you care if the other guy is speeding? Notice how Germany doesn't have the same death rates on the highway as us? That's because people are SEVERELY fined if they are caught driving in the left lane! It's pass only!!!

Why are our highway death rates so high? Because of the ignorant people that try to be tough guys on the road and play citizen traffic cop!

Edit: I'd like to add that there's always someone tougher, faster or better....don't forget that.

also it is LAW in many states that if you are going the speed limit in the passing lane but are impeding the flow of traffic you CAN be ticketed for 1. Impeding the flow of traffic, and 2. Not yielding to faster traffic. Maybe you should check out laws before you start quoting them off as if you are Johnny law himself ;)

Lets see if I can help you buy a clue.

It's called a speed limt for a reason.
You are not supposed to go over that limit.
Got it?

Now if I am going that limit and I am passing slower traffic I am following the law to the letter.
I am not "trying" to hold you up.
Maybe I had my share of tickets and can't afford anymore.
Maybe its not all about you...got it?

Just for fun, lets say that last night I had my third in a row knock out drag out with my old lady.
I am living on three hours sleep for the past two nights.
The next morning I am on my way to work passing slower traffic to the right and going the speed limit.
Some jerk who happens to be in a big dam hurry comes up my a$$ and rides it and starts to flash his high beams at me.
He could stand a dam good chance of buying my rear bumper.

Not everyone out there gives a nice little brake tap, some like to just dynamite the brake and see what happens.
Dam did you see that deer? Oh I guess not you were to dam busy riding my a$$
Now fix my car dip$hit.

Now...is any of that worth it?
Just back off and take your time man....life is too dam short.

Yup! Absolutely nothing wrong with that, at all!

As long as you are getting back over at the nearest opportunity, then I see no problem - the problem lies with the impatient speeder behind. In NO way should you feel intimidated / forced to speed up just because the person behind doesn't know how to drive, in my opinion.

EDIT: Well, I say all that, but sometimes I do get annoyed, particularly in instances, say, like on I 95 where some sections are just 2 lane and some old 'granny' IS overtaking in the passing lane, but doing it sooo goddamn slowly, it makes ya mad! (you know, like a 2 MPH differential between her and the car in the inside lane, therefore completely blocking up the route)

Hello, my name is Micah and i'm an idiot. In jersey, the left lane is just about reserved for people who have enough money to end a cops career. That mean unless you are in a newer luxury or exotic on the turnpike or interstate, you are a target of the cops. Try driving 80 in a civic with a wing and see how long it takes to get pulled over. If you are in a brand new BMW, you can barrel down the left lane at 100+

Not like I really want to enter into this big argument, but I agree with one thing-if you are in the left lane, and aren't actually passing cars, you are a dic%-just get over, that is what I was taught when I learned to drive.

I hate tailgaters, but if I am holding up traffic in the left lane, then I have to live with the fact that I might have caused the situation. I NEVER tailgate others, it is not worth finding out that the moron in front of you has a loaded gun and is interested in ruining two lives.

Growing up takes years.

So, you're saying that cops are intimidated by people with money? I don't believe that for a second, especially if those 'rich' people are breaking the law.

two more cents added, I drive in jersey all the time, and see no difference in who gets pulled over-66 Chevys with no quarters left, to AMG's, if a NJ trooper clocks you 7+ over on the AC expressway, you got points-don't think for a second they care about who 'has money', EVERYBODY has money when it comes to radar. NJ is a Democratic state, they do not discriminate, your cash is green.:D

You lost your money on buying that clue because I'm still not seeing eye to eye with you on that one ;)

If you intend to get over is it that hard to put your signal on to let people know you are not being a dick and that you intend to get over? You still haven't answered my grocery store comment, would you like it if someone just decided to walk really slow purposely in front of you? I'm betting by your mannerisms through the way you type you would speak up pretty quick. You come off as a take no :q:q:q:q type of guy and if someone else is purposely trying to hold you up because they want to take their time you would most definitely speak up.

If that's true that would make your whole point hypocritical.

Again it's not always about being a tough guy, it's about being courteous of those around you. I drive fast, and I'm not in a hurry. I drive fast because I like to, not because I'm in a big damn hurry. If someone drives faster by all means I'll let them pass because I'm considerate of others around me. If someone drives slower I'd expect them to move out of the way too.

Yup! Absolutely nothing wrong with that, at all!

Exactly! your edit is exactly my point! Regardless what her speed is, it's inconsiderate to not let others faster than you to go. She may think the same thing that you said about people going faster than you. See how it's a two way street. Everyone has a difference of opinion what is an acceptable speed which is why people are supposed to get over to let those that are going faster pass.

That is also why they teach in drivers ed, and also in the drivers license handbook THAT SLOWER TRAFFIC SHOULD KEEP RIGHT....IT DOESN'T SAY IF YOU ARE GOING THE SPEED LIMIT YOU CAN IMPEDE THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. IT SAYS SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT! VERY CLEAR AND CONCISE ON WHAT THEY MEAN.

Exactly. People wouldn't tailgate, if others got over. I give people about a mile before I start to get pissed and start to pull closer on them.

So, you're saying that cops are intimidated by people with money? I don't believe that for a second, especially if those 'rich' people are breaking the law.

Look at the studies that came out of the cars pulled over most. In most cases it was cars for low to middle class americans. The only high end car that donned that list was the Mercedes AMG.
