it's a 94, and i haven't had problems with it before, but last couple of days it won't engage 1st gear from park/neutral until i give it gas and wait about 5 seconds, it also has a super bad shimmy when downshifting from first, (when it doesn't go into false neutral, happened 3 times) feels like rear tires are hopping, but they don't chirp. also goes into neutral and takes about 5 seconds to re-engage gear when at a stoplight. any ideas?

ok, forget our smart ass comments. what do you think 70k really means? its a piece of machinery right. my buddy works for a chevy dealer and they had a 2010 car that they sold brand new, with 56 miles on it, with a blown head gasket. 56 miles thats fifty six. so now, 70k, 170k 7 miles, it doesnt matter what it has for miles, its mechanical, things fail, you cannot think that your trans cant be complete junk because it only has 70k on it. everyone loves to say that about cars, but it only has this many miles on it, so what i am only 33 and my back and both knees are shot, i can believe it though!

Funny thing is they tell you what to do in a simple way, and you get all butthurt over it. I could care if they call me an a--hole, idiot or whatever they are very helpful here.

and then people wonder why i just look at threads and don't post..
Oh good grief. Really? That gets your panties in a bunch?
You stated your problem. You were given the fix. You said you didn't want to believe it. If you don't believe it then the only alternative is to live with it.

You want something that sounds believable? Ie something easier and cheaper? Some may say replace the fluids and filter. That wayh you can have the same problem and be out another $100.

Sorry you are so sensitive.

Mechanical things break at different times for different reasons. Hell, my motor failed at 94k and was replaced with a 169k one. Early mark trans are known to be a bit weak and its a shame you have to see it first hand but crap happens.

Hope ya get it sorted out.

agreed, the shimmy sounds like the merc III shutter, (kinda feels like going over a rumble strip as you approach a stop sigh) merc V should fix that but its the delay of hitting first that worries me. im sure your brother has seen all the possibilities what does he say?

it's not just stopping, it also does it under light acceleration, but yeah that's exactly what it feels like. going to try it the cheap way first before we just do it the expensive way.

   Must be nice to have $100 to burn.

come to florida i'll give you a perfect working transmission for free just get it the :q:q:q:q out of my shop!

my dad had an employee using the company truck call in with the same problem... turns out it was low on trans fluid, filled it up and all has been well for 3 years or so now

Fluid was recently changed, and is at the level it should be.
Oh, fluid was just replaced? $100 says that was your problem. Did you happen to look at the trans fluid before the change? Was it tarnished, browned or smell even remotly burnt? If it was then the trans is now slipping its clutches cause they are slick. Gonna need a rebuild or replacement.

i wasn't around when it was changed, but most likely, it was changed roughly 5k miles ago and it's the color it should be now.

what laser is trying to say is that if the fluid was brown and burnt, then you were better off leaving it in and just running it till it died b/c when you change burnt fluid, the detergents from the new fluid f*ck the clutches up among other components. I was told this from a very good trans shop around here plus I always heard that from other guys. Jamie said he would give you a good one so take him up on it;)

well if you dont know you better start somewhere. i'll bet anything the fluid in it isnt mercon 5, first problem secondly, the damage sounds like its already done so a fluid and filter change is probably wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too late.
