Tranny stand....

No I'm not asking about a stand where tranny's hang out :shifty:

I'm asking if anyone knows of a good tranny stand for the 98 4r70w?
I was going to buy an engine stand but the company I called said it wouldn't be a good idea to put a tranny on the engine stand for a prolonged period of time. I plan on keeping this thing on there a decent amount of time.

I bought a 98 tranny from Jamie in hopes to be able to build it and toy with it so when my tranny eventually kicks out, I'll have one laying in wait.

After the tranny stand, I'm going to have to start looking into the best way to build this beast. I found a pretty cool article that mentions the mark and how robust our transmission is. They put it in a 03/04 Cobra and said it made a huge improvement. Here's the article for those that would be interested....

Trying to figure that one out myself. My 98 is going on the stand this weekend and it will be on it for about 2 weeks.

only thing i would worry about is it cracking the bellhousing, since when in the car the rear of the trans is supported. not to mention on a engine stand all you can do to the trans is a open the pan, if you wanna dissect trans everything comes out the front (right into the eng stand)

I'm getting mine ready to do the J-Mod and don't have a work bench in the garage and I want it at a chair level. I don't need to get into the front of it for anything.

Dude, they make a bench mounted holding fixture for the tranny. It allows full articulation and full access for service. Part number T57L-500-B. Google it.

I told them that I was going to keep it on the stand for a prolonged period of time, upwards of possibly a year. I said I was concerned that since the weight of the tranny is not dispersed evenly, whereas an engine has more even weight distribution, that the engine stand would not hold for a prolonged period of time. They told me that it wasn't meant to hold it for a long time like that, and that it could fail.

I'm not looking to have the tranny drop off the stand and break. I'd not only be out the money for the tranny, but I'd be out the money for the stand.

Does that bolt to an engine stand and you use it that way? How does it exactly work? Is it safe for long periods?

hmmmmm..... That's really expensive for a simple stand.

I had mine on an engine stand for close to a year, no props on tail shaft, and no problems at all. Worked great for a jmod.

When its in the car it has all the bolts installed.
On a stand it only has 4.
I don't think of the stress, just all that weight on a few holes.
Its alum. not steel.
I wouldn't do it to a trans I wanted to use.
I have seen bell housings break just taking the trans apart.
Why would you want to store it on a stand anyway?
Bag it and put it on a furniture dolly.

Nope not as much.
There is a lot more meat were a engine is mounted.
A trans is not threaded like a block, and some of the ears can be pretty thin.
I just wouldn't do it.

But a engine cradle is the way to store, I wish I had one for the SB I got on the stand now.

except when its in the car theres the rear trans mount kid, and if hes doing a jmod, theres a good chance hes gonna do accumulator springs, all it would take is a good push when you remove the snap ring and you could crack the bell housing

Exactly where mine will be, on an engine stand but not for a year. I have a good engine stand in the garage. I never have seen one of those bench deals before but I wouldn't use one either because 1. I don't have a bench and 2. It doesn't look very trustworthy for holding a transmission in the position I need it to be held in. I'm not mounting it until the day I get started on it and I would think I can have it done with a day or two. Raising a 7 year old on my own along with watching after my father is a job on it's own. Hell, I might have both of them out there helping me. My son loves to ask questions constantly and my dad, well, I never know what his situation might be at the time.

I never have seen one of those bench deals before but I wouldn't use one either because 1. I don't have a bench and 2. It doesn't look very trustworthy for holding a transmission in the position I need it to be held in.

LOL, yeah you need a sturdy bench to mount it but it will hold the tranny just fine in any position you would like.

just gotta bolt the bench to the floor and you'll be fine, it looks scary with a big diesel trans just hanging there but it will hold

If you are worried about the cantilever effect of using the engine stand then just cut a 2"x4" to support the tailshaft. These pieces aren't that heavy.
