premium vs regular lol

no just that it has to be discussed, no i dont put regular in, i havent put regular in a car since i can remember

no just that it has to be discussed...

Its sad really. Most have no clue about the octane reading. My fiend tried to convince me he gets better milage on premium with his Prius. LOL Its marketing that is to blame really.

Or I love it when people "treat" their car to premium every one and a while.

Or simple those who use premium all the time when the car calls for 87 or lower.

I always run what is required. Ranger gets regular, SHO gets 93 and the Maxima gets 89. Reason the Maxima gets 89 is because it says "premium for maximum performance" and with the cold weather and me not hot rodding it I will just save a few cents at the pump.

It's not always a waste to use premmie in a regular octane car. It does help slow the build up of carbon even though it does almost nothing to increase performance. But the cons outweigh the pros of that in cost terms.

They claim premium has more detergents where regular has a bare minimum. I dont know...i don't work for shell.

Personally I use costco since I have a couple hundred cans of bg system chemicals at my disposal.

my car starts better in the cold on premium. performance? couldn't tell ya. mileage? pretty darn sure premium is better in my car. plus ever since the chip, it likes regular even less.

I might have jinxed myself. I filled up tonight and after pulling out I started to have a panic attack cause I can't remember pushing the premium button but I always do so I'm sure I did

I always use 93 octane in the Mark and the Cobra. The Exploder gets 87 usually because it doesn't require premium. The Mark does not like it when I skimp and give her 87 octane. Lots of spark knock under load and poor performance and economy. I don't remember the last time I put anything other than 93 in the Mark. And since replacing the coils, she's been running soooooooooo good!

Not true, the additive packages are the same. In fact, some stations do not blend any ethanol to premium. Such as Shell. And ethanol is a pretty good cleaner.

I always use 93, ethanol free or BP 93 but never anything lower than 93 octane. Nothing at all is being gained by putting 87 in a Mark. If you filled up, what are you saving????, maybe $3.00...No, not really. This includes MPG and the health of the car period. I would rather know the fuel is cleaner and I'm 98% sure I'm getting more miles from a tank. Spark plugs looked extremely good when I changed them during the summer. I changed the plugs in the 88 GMC truck I have that always had 87 octane burned in it and the plugs looked burnt and black, not a white clean burn like the Marks plugs were.

Now I use 93 in the truck also. It runs better and idles smoother, cranks up quicker. I rarely drive it so, to me, it's not a waste to have it in there.

Personally, I think 87 and 89 should just be done away with all together. Premium is better all around. Some higher compression engines require it and a lot of newer cars, even little jap econoboxes are going high compression for better economy, more power, and lower emissions. I'm just going to start using premium in everything I have, just to stay consistent:D

I have always put the reg in my lincoln never put mid or premium in it, I get like 20 mpg average and runs good.

Sorry, but this is part of the ignorance. Not trying to insult ya. But its not about economy, never was. Its about detonation/knock. Higher octane means it can compress more without having an uncontrolled detonation. It can happen without one even hearing it. And on the 4.6L, it cam mean the death of the oil sump.

I wasn't saying that premium helps clean, was just saying that it is slower to build up carbon deposits but I understand what you're saying..

Strange thing I encountered was a GMC I owned that had a Quadrajet carbed 305 in it. Owner told me it got better MPG on premium and it did

I worked in Dover for a while and it would get 25 to 30 miles more out of a tank of 93 instead of 87?

Never quite figured that one out

If a car is not tuned right, premium can make up for it. But if a car is in good condition, its impossible to get better economy out of higher octane fuel.
