I always said I would never paint the chrome strip on my bumper covers but now that I have some fresh black LSC side moldings, I done the rear today. Sanded last night and primed. Wet sanded today with 1000 grit and did not miss one spot and then come back with a 1500 grit wet sanding on the primer. I spent hours on this. Once I got that finished, I finally got to lay the black paint to it. 3 coats of acrylic enamel and 3 coats of clear. I'm too damn tired right now to get the finished pics but I will get some daytime pictures up tomorrow. It turned out like liquid black glass. It looks unreal now and a lot better with the molding painted not to mention the once scratched up cover. Tomorrow the LSC moldings will go on and then I'll be painting the front bumper cover that I have off the 93. I'm tired of taping things off and I could do it a lot easier while it's off and do a better job. When I'm done, I guess I'll have a mix breed Mark. 1/2 base and 1/2 LSC. Pics below are what I took before I started and after priming.

My rear cover needs to be painted, after I put in the new column and clock spring I will be taking it off and taking it to the shop. Body work is my weak suit and I will leave it to the pros.

If it were me I would have taken the cover off. Its just alot easier to work with that way. Cant wait to see it painted.

The rear really wasn't that bad doing it while on. I have already done the front before and I know it would be a lot easier to do while off. Mine has some bad chrome spots also on the front that I don't care to fix and the 93 just needs the same thing done to it as the rear needed, except it's off and waiting. Until I get it done, I'm just going to paint the chrome strip on the 94 for now so that it doesn't clash with the rear and LSC moldings. I'll have those cleaned and taped on by tomorrow but pics of the rear cover are coming today because it is done.

What kinda gun are you usin? Or are you rattle cannin it? And if you are usin a gun what size tank you have..... And looks good too :D

You are just gonna end up painting the whole damn car bit by bit...

lol, my dad said the same thing. I got the pics of it today or about an hour ago. Keep in mind that I still have to come back in a few days and do some water sanding on the clear to make it even slicker but as it stands now, I think it looks pretty good for $25.00 and the hours I have in it. Now I have to get the damn tape off the back of the LSC moldings that Jamie sent me. I think they're going to set it off but that tape ain't no joke getting off.

slick, this is all Dupli Color (acrylic enamel) I'm using. I'm getting a DeVilbiss gun in a week or so and before it's all over, I will paint the entire car and the compressor I have in the garage is a Porter Cable 60 gal 135 psi. I'm just doing this now for the fun of it and to make it look better. The total cost for the bumper cover was $25 to $30 using the Dupli Color paint and clear. I still had plenty of primer and sand paper left from when I done the top of the car.

Thanks! It will turn out much better when I get done with it. Wet sanding will take out the orange peel look and give it the slick finish I wanna see. It's workable now but I like for it to cure a few days before I finish up. I did finally get all the tape off the back of the LSC moldings tonight and used the Meguiars medium cut on them to remove the oxidation and minor blemishes and then used a different buffer to apply scratch and swirl remover. Got them wiped down now and they look fresh out of the factory. I had a huge roll of 2 sided tape but I guess it rolled out with someone because I can't find it. I'll have them on tomorrow though after I go get another roll of 3M tape. I have to get paint for the front bumper cover now that I have setting out back anyway.

not bad terry, specially for rattle, hell whatever works, its rattle can but its still regular enamel paint in the can! spraying out of the can just means you dont have to mix anything and no guns to clean up!!!! looks good.

It's amazed me so far. I just wished Dupli Color would add a little more pressure to the cans but after the 2nd time you use it, you get used to how it needs to be done and yes, it's just like any other paint. I bet I could do an entire car with the can and pass it off as being done with a gun. It's all about how you prep the surface and the time you put into it. The more time you put into those two things, the better the paint job is going to be. That's one thing you can't rush is the prep or your job will look like :q:q:q:q.

Just wait till I do the 93 bumper cover for the front. It's gonna look top notch and I'll have about $30 into it. So in total, I'll have almost $110 invested in the roof, front and rear bumper covers. If it was taken to a shop and prepped like I prep it, no telling what it would have cost.

Thanks!

Today I got back on it and removed the old moldings with chrome trim and put the LSC moldings that Jamie sent me in. I patiently had to remove all the old 2 sided tape from where the old moldings were using a cordless drill with a pin striping eraser. I just done one at a time slowly. Put new 3M 2 sided tape on the LSC moldings which I had to clean old tape off of too. They made a world of difference after getting all 4 on. It's not pictured but I also took care of the front bumper cover chrome and it's now all black also. When I was done with all of that, I decided I didn't want that cracked looking pin striping anymore so I removed every bit of it and that really changed things. I have never seen this car look this good. I know it's a mixed breed because I don't have LSC bumper covers but if you don't know anything about a Mark, it would go unnoticed. I'll get a couple of outside shots of it tomorrow that show the front bumper cover too but this is what I have so far below.

After using the rotary eraser, I used a polishing compound and a buffer to remove the residue left. I had the entire car pin stripe free within 45 min, polished and all.

So now what you see in the sig pic below is no longer. 100% better now.

Damn Terry, that looks great!! Fine job and I agree it is a lot better with the painted over chrome strips in the bumpers.
I am going to paint over mine when I paint the car.

Thanks Duck, I really need to get it out of the garage and get some pics because that garage has so much :q:q:q:q in it down both walls and the floor needs to be painted. :shifty: No, not painting the floor. Yeah, I agree about the chrome molding looking better painted. I think on darker colors it looks good, not sure about light colors. Haven't seen any painted yet.

the mouldings are a bitch to get off the door without breaking, the body mouldings are like a hard rubber, and over time they get brittle, thats why i dont have more lsc mouldings than i do because i always break one. its hard, you got lucky with those, but the car was in great shape and obviously not in the sun much, they came off perfect. car looks sooooooooooooooo much better, looking good old man!!

I tore one right in half in Texas.... Tommy wasn't looking and yank :D

Naw, I was in a junkyard pulling em, and the one just ripped...

I can tell you now that mine didn't come off perfect lol. Pass side broke in 1/2 almost and the drivers side was breaking up everywhere. I got the little ones off in good shape though. I feel old today after doing everything I have done this week.

I thought I had the pass side coming off in one piece until I noticed it tearing in 1/2. By the time I saw it, it was too late but I ain't worried about them moldings anymore.

great job man, after you polish it it will be flush with the factory paint

Yes, the car does need to be gone over real good. It's dusty and has water spots on the door. I might get out there tonight and get on it or wait till tomorrow when it's warm. I did get a few "away from the house pics" so that all that stuff in the garage isn't reflecting. Tires are dirty too. The whole thing got dusty when I removed the pin striping at around 1 am.
