I have octastars finally (thanks again Jamie!)

I've always known that there were two types of octastars, one type with frosted chrome on the holes between the spokes, the other with shiny chrome.

I never noticed that they were totally different wheels though. The small holes between the spokes are smaller on the shiny type.

One of the wheels in my set had been replaced with the shiny type, so now I can say I have all the different original Mark VIII chrome wheels (20 spoke, 10 spoke, and the 2 types of octastars).

So, what type do you have? I think the shiny ones are more rare. Also, does anyone know the story about these 2 types? My 98 brochure shows the frosted chrome type.

That's pretty interesting. I've been into Mark VIII's for over 8 years now and never realized that there were different kinds of Octastars. Maybe they're Chinese knock-offs! lol.

Anyway, thanks for posting that!

i knew about it for many years and have sold both kinds but i am wondering if the all chrome ones were refurbished ones? there are companies that take them, strip them and replate them, could it be the ones we find with smooth chrome in the windows are replated octastars?

Damn I never noticed that........ holy shaaat Batman............... I got a set of the one on the right thats soon 2 be on my CE when I get it back.

Now thats Interesting

Octos are damn ugly..
10 spokes rule (for oem)
I want Speedstars

they have different sized openings if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me, so they can't be refurbs...that's really odd

for oem if you like any wheel better than the octastars its cause
you haven't had octastars

omg dude i didnt know what you were talking about until i read your writing then went and looked again, they are totally different, the all chrome has tiny triangle windows and the one on the right has larger triangles holy :q:q:q:q i never would have noticed that if you didnt point it out, and i thought i knew mark VIII's lol, damm!

Looks like you didn't read my post Jamie.:D

So far, it sounds like the frosted ones are more common.

Which ones are the best in chrome? Octostars, 10-Spoke Directionals, or 20 spoke directionals?

I'm not sure what you mean by best, but here are my opinions:

I like the looks and ease of cleaning/waxing the 10 sopkes, but I think they are the cheapest built, as they are only chromed on the outside, and that lets them corrode horribly.

I like the looks of the 20 spokes and I think they are the best built, as they are fully chromed inside and out. They are a bit of a pain to clean and wax though.

I'm not sure about the octastars yet, I need to put them on my cars and see how they look. It's hard to tell with the coating on the inside of the wheel, but I don't think they are chromed as well on the inside as the 20 spokes are. I've never seen a corroded octastar though.

the 10 spokes are chromed throughout but lincoln painted over the chrome on the inside with a silver coating, if you take mild steel wool and some purple power you will find the chrome on the backside of any chrome 10 spoke. i dont understand the thinking process behind this, but i cleaned it all off on my old white 97 lsc and the wheels looked sick. i have pics somewhere but dont feel like going through 4 photobucket accounts to find them right now lol!

I'm not talking about the inside of the rim being plated, I'm talking about the inside of the hub.

If that part was plated on the 10 spokes, it was a poor job, because I've never seen any chrome there.:)

i got the ones on the right (big triangles) and they are corroded and were when i got the car, still got them tucked away in my shed

oh i gotcha bill yeah inside the hub is not plated and inside the lug nut holes sucks too, it was plated inside them, but it might as well been glued on tin foil!!!
