Need Waterpump, electric one worth it?

It was a good point that was brought up a few post back about the Mark all ready having enough of a electrical load on it without the addition of an electric water pump. A larger alternator would be needed, At least I would think so. I just can't see spending $500+ dollars on a water pump.

1) alternator positive to battery positive, 2) battery negative to chassis, and 3) engine ground to chassis

I've had only one issue with the electric pump. The power wire at the relay had a loose connection and fried. Didin't take long to figure out the pump wasn't running. ;)

Of course then there was the time I shredded the serpentine belt and because the water pump was electric, I was able to drive several miles at highway speeds to the safety of the next exit. Couldn't have done that with a stock setup.

The stock pump is adequate but since it is belt driven, the pump runs faster than needed at higher speeds and robs HP. The electric pump runs a constant speed and thus no HP is 'wasted'. That is where the HP gains are realized.

Burping the cooling system can sometimes be a pain with an electric pump since the pump is running full speed at idle, unlike the stock belt driven setup.

I haven't noticed any electrical deficiency that could be attributed to the electric water pump. Any aftermarket audio system will dwarf the electrical load of the pump.

Is it worth the HP gain? That depends how much value you place on the HP you leave on the table with the stock belt driven pump. If you want every last HP available with bolt ons, the electric water pump is certainly worthy of consideration.

Thanks for the info! I see it like this: If the stock alternator can supply a power hungry air suspension system and all the other items without much trouble, then my coil converted car's charging system will have no trouble supplying the extra 13 amps for a water pump.

Ah.. so these pumps just run at one speed then. Ok. (i had some crazy idea that they might be temperature controlled to run at variable speeds for maximum efficiency - guess i thought too hard about them! Lol.)

Electric Power Steering Pump! If these pumps came down in price ide def consider it down the road... but 500 bucks is a lot :-0
