Hey guys!

I had a kind of "accident" yesterday involving a shorted starter cable and some blown fusible links... The fuel lines got extremely hot while looking for another ground and screwed them up bad. I need to go to the JY today to get some new fusible links and fuel lines. I need a pic or just advise on where the fuel lines to the fuel rails go. I know they go down to the fuel filter area, but do both lines end there? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I need a pic like this, but this one is too fuzzy...

Both plastic line ends are right there at the filter, one on the filter, the plastic return lines end is about 4 inches lower than the filter. Pretty easy to swap.
How'd you get the lines hot looking for a ground??

I got the lines yesterday at the JY. I was just mostly wondering about the line setup incase I got there I needed some kind of fitting tool that I wasnt expecting. Here's what happened...

I did the transmission on Friday. I removed the starter, and I have done this many, many times when working at ford. I pulled the starter out of the bell housing and rotated the starter cable away from the cradle. Well, I continued to pull the trans and at one point I heard a pop. It really sounded like the when a piece of wood cracks from weight, and I had a 2x4 under the trans on the jack. So I thought nothing of it and kept going. Well, about 5 minutes later, my buddies wife who had been sitting in the garage said that there was smoke coming out from under my hood. I popped the hood and started looking around for the source. It was coming from under the cowl area on the passenger side. I quickly realized that the fuel lines were smoldering. I immediately removed the ground cable from the battery and looked some more. We could hear a hissing noise, and I quickly realized it was fuel. So I put a rag and a screw driver in the schrader valve in the rail. Bled off the pressure and the smoking stopped.

Sooooo... The starter had grounded to the frame, without making so much as a spark. the first pop we heard was the fusible links in the ground cable by the battery popping. Then power went looking for the next best ground it could find. My assumption of how it happened is since the fuel filter is clamped to the body, and then the fuel pressure regulator is bolted to the block, that was its next best path for ground. The braided fuel lines got so hot, that the rubber hose that wraps around it melted off. I'll get a pic up. So yesterday, I replaced the fusible links and the fuel lines, and everything has been peachy.

I realize how entirely fortunately lucky, and that was probably the closest call I have ever had in my life. My hands were shaking for about an hour afterwards... So, lesson learned, always disconnect the starter power wire. I'm sure I'll also get chastised here for not doing it, but this isnt commonly an issue, the power cable is not normally that close to a ground. Its just the way it is on a Mark/Tbird/Cougar.

Always disco the battery ground! Omg Dan.. dude..

Glad you didn't blow the car and yourself up.

Ya well, shame on me. I was just going to keep this to myself, but figured I would share my lesson.

I guess now I'm the village idiot.

I guess I was just in a hurry... I was unable to get any help at all when pulling the transmission at the JY, did it entirely by myself. Carried it to the car by myself... Installed it in the car, solely by myself on the ground.

Take it easy Dan.

Just giving you ****.

I'm just glad you are ok, and the car is still in one piece. We've all done idiotic things like this before.

Just consider it a lesson. :)

I caught a trash can with solvent soaked rags on fire in my shop one day. I had to drag the burning barrel out to keep it.from burning the joint down.

I bought a flame proof trashcan the next day.

Live and learn my friend.

Dan, no matter what you do or how bad you screw up you will never replace Ripped Camel as Village Idiot!!

I appreciate the re-reply Mike... You are one of the forum members here that I respect the most. Like I said, I didn't want to share, but figured what the heck. I really do realize how lucky I am, it is pretty damn scary to think about.

Everything went really well, there is some more info about the swap over in my other "Well, ****" thread but, the transmission is in. I am very happy with the small changes I made to the j-mod in it, and it being a 2000 transmission. Just trying to figure out my method for correcting the speedometer now...

I'll share one with you Dan.. it happens to all of us at some point.
I was working on my 65 GTO trying to figure out why my gas gauge didn't go below 1/4 tank. I dropped the tank under the car and wanted to leave everything connected while I tested the swing on the.sending unit. Wasp had built a mud nest on top of the tank in the access hole, I got a wire brush and the vaccumm to clean it up.
I figured I didn't want any dirt getting in the tank so rather than blow the dirt everywhere I cleaned it up best I could and cracked the locking ring loose as I vaccummed out the last of the dirt.
I'm sure you can all see where this is going.. lol.
Gas fumes.. turbine in the vaccumm = jet engine, or small flame thrower.
The poor vaccumm cleaner didn't survive as it jumped around with flames shooting out the back and I must have hit the bottom of the car 40 time in two second trying to get out from underneath it.
Scared the hell out of me, I think my dad damn near wet himself he was laughing so hard.

A couple weeks ago I was burning the trash in the barrel behind the building. Bill hands me an old coolant jug with something in it. He says it was some diesel, so I poured a little on the side of the can that wasn't burning yet to help it get going. Turns out it was gas with 2 cycle oil. As soon as I poured --WHOOSH! Fire jumped to the jug that was still in my hand. So instead of just dropping it I flung it away from us, flinging fire all over as the jug flew across the yard.

Kinda like the guy on Fast n Loud that was using the bottle with gas to start the old Pontiac.. lol

Its OK Dan.. seriously just glad you're OK :)

Lol, thats a good one...

Dan, don't ever feel stupid or ashamed about something that you should have done but didn't or something you messed with but shouldn't have. Remember, I almost killed myself inside my car, all because I got in a hurry and jerked 4 injectors out of the extra 4.6 I had in the garage and then slapped them in my 94 and one was missing an O-ring or something. I know the feeling about being scared and shaking. Just imagine actually seeing the front of your car explode, inside a garage and the door shutting behind you. If anyone had been in the garage (and my son always checked on me) they and he would have died instantly. People 10 houses away heard the explosion. I lost my car, tig welder, so many large and small power tools in the garage, from either fire or heat. I was extremely lucky that the flames in the initial explosion, blew out the bottom of the door and caught the attention of the door sensors and made the door go back up. It was Jan and cold out there and I had the windows up and the firewall on the car saved me. I'm not sure how but a flame did come through one of my center vents or somewhere from the dash and it was a fireball that shot past my face and singed my eyebrow. Then I had to dive out of the car, onto the garage floor that was still burning because of all the gas in the floor.

I then took a dive from that spot, straight out onto the driveway that was loaded with broken glass from the garage door. The explosion busted out every glass panel in the door and twisted it silly. It twisted two metal doors, one that leads out back and the other that leads into the laundry room and kitchen area. The back wall was knocked 8" off the concrete foundation. I lost the car as you and many others already know and I lost a lot that I had in the garage, all because I chose to get in a hurry and didn't stop to think things through first. It was a mistake and I'll admit it, it was a stupid mistake that really cost me and could have killed me and others. Luckily, no one got hurt. My son was all the way on the other side of the house, laying in my bed and watching tv. My dad was inside the house and had only been inside for about 5 to 10 min prior to me blowing the place up. After trying to get the fire out with an almost empty fire extinguisher, I went inside and got them two out of the house because I really thought the fuel tank was next to explode. So, I had to stand there and watch my car just burn for about 5 min and then I had to watch the fire dept flood the entire car and bust out my windows so they could spray the top of the dash. Yeah, that night really sucked for me but, I look at it like this. All I suffered was a cut on my leg from diving into glass that was in the driveway. I didn't even know I was cut until the fire dept was gone and I noticed my sock was wet from blood. I also think to myself that my son and dad could have been standing out there with me but luckily they weren't. The sad part about all of this is that the injectors weren't the problem. It was my cam position sensor that was the culprit. I learned this from seeing others with the same exact problem I was having and swapping that part fixed them right up. I learned a big lesson just like you did but I can say that when I put the 98 trans in the 94, I disconnected the battery first thing. I had no reason to have power but I think I know why you really left it connected lol. It's name is Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X993 :D

I might be wrong but that would be my guess. Seeing how I have the same deck you have, I know it's hell to reset that thing back to the settings you had it at. I absolutely hate disconnecting my battery and killing the power to my stereo. Sometimes it HAS to be done.

I'm just glad you ended up being ok and didn't lose the car. I admire you going to the JY and removing a trans all by yourself and carrying it to your car and then attempting to put it in all by yourself, in a driveway. Very very few people in here can say they could have actually done that. I know I wouldn't have been able to. That's why I paid someone to help me install the 98 I had. You made a mistake and you learned from it and it won't be your last mistake either. We all make many in our life and we learn from them so, never feel stupid or dumb or feel like you can't come on here and tell us something. We're grown and we're no better than you are. Well, you knew you could tell me and not get bashed because you text me about it shortly after it happened. I was just glad that nothing bad happened to you and you didn't blow the car up or hurt anyone else. It's fixed now and you need the orange gear, I believe. :p

BTW, PM me your address, I have something for you. I thought I had it in my phone but apparently not.

Ya Terry, that damn head unit was part of the reason... Didn't want to fool with it. And I didn't attempt to put it in by myself, I did get it in ;)

As for the transmission gear, basically... I am SOL. I would need a 22 tooth speedo gear, which they do not make. I am looking into a Dakota Digital speedo converter at the moment. Similar to speed-cal but cheaper because it is universal.

Mike, I am unfamiliar with that... Is that an option? The way I see it is this. The drive gear went up one tooth, so one more driven tooth should make it right... Does that sound right? I currently have a 21 tooth gear, if I could just find a 22 tooth gear, that should make it work.

I will look into this Chrysler gear thing mike!
