Im new here, my first post.

I getting ready to purchase a LS. I have looked at many, but have spend limited time in the seat. Is the navigation system any good? The graphics look weak compared to todays displays.

I have found a 2005 V8 non-sport with 66K miles in mint condition. It has the premium sound system, but no sun roof. The guy is asking just over 11k for the car. I think that is high. What do you think a good price is? The car also has the origional coil packs.

Thanks,
Michael

seriously theres multiple threads on the stock nav.

Seems kinda high. The stock navigation isn't that great. I like the looks of it but I don't use it much so I'm going to keep it. If you are going to use it a lot i would recommend an after market unit.

I just replaced my stock NAV with aftermarket... I feel like I just advanced technology by a decade. No more windows 95 graphics!!!!!! Yay!

And if you do plan on getting aftermarket headunit with NAV, try and find an LS WITHOUT NAV.... It is a total pain to install aftermarket into stock NAV systems.

^lol damn is it that bad? I'm gonna buy a 06 LSE one day. Do all 06's have the nav unit?

Actually, as far as reliable navigation, it is not that bad. Unlike many aftermarket units, it always knows which way you are pointed, even at first start up and when not moving. It works pretty well in tunnels and other places without GPS reception. The 1/4 VGA 256 color display does not really bother me, it's good enough for its purpose.

However, there are some problems...
The CD changer is not too reliable.
Map updates are $200 and don't come out often (last was 2008).
No native iPOD support, aftermarket iPOD interfaces are hit and miss and mostly miss for 2006.
No native blue tooth phone support. (aftermarket add ons do work okay)
No native rear view camera support (aftermarket add on available)

... Do all 06's have the nav unit?

No.

Personal preference. I like the look of the stock nav look vs the no nav look, I like the stock nav look over the aftermarket look, but the aftermarket isn't years old in tech. If you're really into tech and want a legit nav system with the works,go aftermarket, if not the THX nav is more than enough

There was an '09 update (7D and I got it two years ago) and now an '11. I will be purchasing the '11 (8D I believe) before vacation this year. IMHO, $200 isn't bad for a North America & Hawai'i map. It is fun to try and plan a route to Honolulu!

Joe already hit what it lacks.

It works well with an update and sounds good but its lacking in those features and is very bland with graphics and colors.

Okay, I thought the 8D was based off of 2008 map data.

Does your car do well driving on water?

Not really the NAV aspect being outdated... I mean really most navigation systems are the same. But the utilization of an aftermarket unit is really cool.

With my old THX NAV setup I could listen to radio, and usually CDs if the changer didn't give me errors. Also the graphics were horrendous. How can you 'like' the grey blocks on a pale yellow background? ickkk!!!

I am all about aesthetics so I needed updated graphics for sure.

With my new unit I can now do everything the stock nav did, only on a more efficient level and with awesome user interface. Scrolling lists and non-pressure touchscreen along with modern graphics.

My phone is now tethered to the unit automatically whenever I get into the car, and I simply plug it into the ipod cable and have access to all my contacts and music on my phone.

Also I now have ability to stream internet radio via phone directly into the headunit with included feedback interface and album art. (Pandora)

I also now have a backup camera that is totally awesome and I can't believe most cars don't come with this now. But for a 'cool factor' I can put the backup camera on the screen at anytime I am driving and continue on with background music or phone call, as well as navigation map side by side with camera. No real point, but it is neat to see behind you when driving or entertainment for a passenger who is bored.

The only con out of the entire deal was of course the install complications and the fact that it is a one disc unit. But when you have easy ipod integration the use for physical discs decreases even more.

The customizable splash screens and button illuminations is also an added bonus to the appeal to the interior of the LS... Which in my opinion is very luxurious to most vehicles and having windows 95 pop up after a beautiful THX logo, was really misleading to the overall interior aesthetics as mentioned earlier.

Not only all the above features of looks, but actual sound. I know the THX is an awesome system and I still love mine even though I have bypassed both amps and added my own subwoofer application, but the aftermarket unit provides a fully customizeable EQ that destroys the "TREBLE BASS" EQ on the OEM unit.

I have fine tuned it to my exact preferences and am fully utilizing both HPF and LPF via the aftermarket player and honestly it sounds better than the THX system did. This however is not to take anything away from the awesome OEM sound that I enjoyed thoroughly.

Just a brief list of things I noticed instantly. Also I must say the LS must have gotten the last leg of the 'old nav' setup.. Because I see 2006ish cars with nice navigation systems. I think the car was just born in a time of rapidly increasing technology for head units and general integration for the times.

I meant how the nav looks like it's oem vs an aftermarket unit not being able to hide it's aftermarket. I agree with all your points and if I didn't have the thx unit I'd have an aftermarket one in for sure. I just like how clean the THX nav looks, not the graphics themselves, just how it fits with the interior.

Thanks for all the info.
I bought the car.! It was really clean, now I guess I have to see how far it will go before I have to replace the coil packs...
who holds the record for the most miles before having to do this??

FWIW, the X920BT that Drizz and I have in our rides looks pretty close to what the THX Nav does. Granted, it's not color-matched - but the buttons are on the left side like the THX Nav. I like the fact that it does NOT have a dial/knob on it like the THX does.

the best feature for me is that it does not have a moving face which will eventually fail, the less moving parts the better.

Very important to me and the first thing I looked for when I was buying my last one.
