My new '94 Mk VIII

it was the accumultor 1-2 that was the problem not the torque converter this was fixed in spring 2001.

RD, my 94 had shudder and I bought a brand new updated accumulator and two brand new springs. One was blue and one was purple. Local Ford parts store charged me nearly $70 for the order. I installed them and my shudder still continued. It did do better when coming to a stop as far as up shifting and the springs I took out were not broke. The shudder got so bad that I couldn't even attempt to power brake the car.

Swapped in the 98 trans with 68K on it and J-Modded it before hand, that car had unreal power compared to what it did have. I used all of the internal solenoids from the 94, including the MLPS, which you have to do if not re-pinning the harness.

My TC was SHOT to hell in the 94. It started just like the OP is saying his is doing. Shudder after 37 to 40 mph (light load) is from the TC, whether it be a bad TC or old burnt fluid ect and on rare occasions, the TCC solenoid could be going bad and not letting the TC lock up as it should. In 98, the TC took on a whole new TC with different friction material inside and many other different upgrades, including the 1-2 and 2-3, clutch packs. When you have shudder after 40 mph driving slowly, you're not even messing with the 1-2 anymore. Maybe what you had wrong did have something to do with the 1-2, idk but shudder after 40 is usually 99% of the time going to be the TC being shot.

he will find out when he drops the valve body of the trans...chances are he will need both a new torque converter and the 1-2 accum done...he should just do a manual swap...lol...if I had to do it over again that is what I would have done.

The 1-2 accumultor problem is really a broken spring in the accumultor causing hard 1-2 shift. This does not make shudder. BTW my 1-2 accum spring was broken in half when i bought my car also.

The piston itself is redesigned to fit better. In my 94 mine was galled on the sides from improper fit, and both springs were broken.

Thanks for all the help and advice (and compliments :) ), the support is very much appreciated.

My trade was a cherry '98 Jeep Cherokee Limited, good leather, upgraded CD with great sound, very clean inside and out, good tires, good mechanical, fresh oil change. I did have two cooling system problems tho, about a year apart, and I told the other guy about that.

My wife & kids (son 15, daughter 13) DID NOT want to trade at first! (I brought it home filthy and after dark on a Thursday night). They loved the Jeep, both kids learned to drive in it, and they didn't want to trade "their" Jeep for "that dusty old grandpa car"... and my wife didn't want us to trade the Jeep for a transmission problem (but i WANTED that car!)

Friday morning, same thing... grumble, gripe, Daddy I hate that old car don't get it, etc.

Friday afternoon when they got off the bus, both mouths dropped open and eyes got big.

I had detail washed it, parked it at a provocative angle with wheels turned just right, visible from the bus stop, sun roof angled up and wheels, chrome, and glass shining. Got a big double thumbs up from the bus driver, and the kids started "coming around". Then I took them for a good ride and my son was SOLD... Saturday morning I let daughter drive it down a country road a few miles and she was too. Early Sunday morning I found this site, printed the Transmission Dying? thread and showed my wife what I think is the solution to the trans. problem... and she started coming around too. She and I took a leisurely Sunday ride in the country, windows down, top open, and she was sold too. Traded paper with the guy Monday, Done Deal!

Now I gotta let 'er sit in the back yard looking good until I get the trans fixed (first, do no harm... right?)... CROP!

Oh, for those who asked, I'm in mid-west GA... about halfway between Macon and Columbus.

Regarding the Dr. Tranny additive suggestion, could I get some opinions on this?

I'd love to be able to drive this baby for a few weeks while I scrounge the money for fluid and filter, and can find a free weekend to work on it. And if I decide to go ahead with the JMOD, 1-2 upgrade, etc., that's more money to save up, and more time to wait to drive it.

But I do not want to risk doing damage that might not already be done. (does that sentence even make sense?)

I think I already know the answer to the question, guess I just don't want to hear it though.

That is true. I did my trans in 2006 so its been 5 years hard to remember everything I did. It did get new 1-2 accum. Ford put a new style rubber lip on it for better life. You have to inspect the accum bore for gall and smooth out before putting in new accum.

Great story great find
Now take care of her
PS you don't need a paint job just new clear
If you do it quickly
