my 2005 ls sport vs 2008 335i....and more

friend of mine just picked up a 2008 335i with tune and CAI. he took me for a spin and when we got to my place he started to say I needed to trade my lincoln in that he would smoke me if we ever raced...well we ended up on an empty highway doing a few 1/4 mile runs and results were surprising. from 50km i pulled on him when he was running no extra boost!! with 10psi it was pretty close but at about 160km he was a car length ahead and pulling. when we got back to my house I could tell he was suprised with how quick the lincoln was lol!


anyways, Ive had my 05 ls for about a year now and have only had to replace the front brakes. It has been pretty good to me, and was my daily driver until I picked up a escalade ESV about a month ago. ive noticed taht when i start the car there is a squeaky belt, and a bubbling sound. I know that the cooling system is shyt so I should probably replace that, but wondering about the belt if anyone else had this problem? and if someone could link me a website taht ships to canada for reasonable price...

Also I searched about turbos and superchargers for this car and seems that there is nothing. there was a couple builds that went nowhere, and alax? 10k for 6psi I think?

Can anybody give me a straight answer if it is worth it to try to make more power with this car or should i just move on? i want to have AT LEAST 350 at the wheels and have about 10-15k to spend...I am not one of these guys that just talks, so if you help me out and point me in the right direction I WILL DELIVER!!

If you can find someone to build the lower end to support big boost, go ahead FI(forced air) your LS since you are speaking as if the budget is there for a build. May as well have the heads ported if you are that committed to it.

Otherwise, for the money, power, and time to install, a 100 shot of Nitrous and a tune will more than wake it up. I just would not recommend installing nitrous on a very high mileage engine(if that is what you have).
 
I'd do a motor swap before I boosted the current engine.

Would be epic to shove a coyote motor under the hood.
 
Each one of my Lincoln's has had to have a damn belt replaced. And there all low mileage. They get a high pitched squealing sound. Especially when it's chilly out. Drives me insane. But in my cases it's only been the belt so easy fix.

I have just under 100k miles on my ls, and would a coyote engine fit? this is where my problem comes in..?

and t money what belt was it? thanks guys

Definitely not worth it. That's a lot of cash to invest into the car. Move on...
 
A weak tensioner or an old idler pulley can also cause the belt squeal by not putting the correct tension on.

STS Turbo (Squires Turbo) makes a universal turbo setup that puts the turbo in the back of the car. The universal is about 2 grand and you can expect another 2 grand to install. That'll leave 6-11 grand to beef up the engine, trans, driveshaft and rear diff to handle the extra power. They claim that the turbo lag difference between their setup and an engine mounted setup is so small as to not be noticable by the driver. I'd like to do one of their systems myself one day, if I weren't busting my backside to get out of debt right now.
 
My take on the OP's position:::

All cars are money pits... That being said, you have 2 options:
1st option is, You sell the LS, drop 30K on a new car, 5 years later your out 15K by value drop.

2nd option is, you upgrade the LS, every nickle and dime you put into it is not gonna be refundable. Unless you part it (when you wanna get rid of it) you wont see a dime you put into it. Thats how the car system works. Either way, your looking at large amounts of money.

The REAL questions are, how much do you Like the LS and how badly do you want it to be faster than your buddies 335i? At this point, you need to ask yourself, how fast is fast enough? Is there a target i.e. you want to be a 12 second car? 11 second? The faster you want to clear the Quarter-mile, the harder and more costly it gets (even just to buy a 13 second LUXURY car, 30K aint gonna do it).

If you want to buy an already 13 second LUXURY car, you have several options. You could consider a used 2008 M3 (will smoke that 335i), Lexus IS series, Infiniti G37 XS, Cadillac has some 400+ horsepower cars, Lincoln MKS.
If you want 12 seconds, its gonna be difficult with Luxury inside the car. You will need serious power, were talking above 500 HP to get a heavy luxury vehicle to beat 12 seconds.

If you are JUST looking to beat your friends 335i, and be the faster luxury vehicle on the road, its doable with the LS. Don't expect bolt-ons but its doable. At least 2 people on this site have Forced inducted their LS's and can mop the floor with 13 second Luxury imports all day long. You can get the LS down to 13.7 Quarter-mile with whats available. To bring it to 13.0 or 12.9, Turbo. Its the only way as far as I know.

Current available (and doable) Mods:
Exhaust, Intake, Tune, Springs, 4.10 gears, Stall converter, GT fuel pump. That should have your LS in around down to 13.7 seconds (average). Add NOS and you definitely will beat that 335i. Your cost to do all this should be less than 5 grand, if you can do most of it yourself.

Move on. With the amount of powerful STOCK vehicles you can get these days, why would you dump 15k into a 7 year old LS rather than just by a 2012 __________. Sell the LS, take that 15k, and you'll be able to get a really nice, powerful car, pay in cash, and run circles around your friend.
 
Intake, Exhaust, 93 octane, slightly shorter tires and you will give him a good run.
 
You can spend $0 and make the car faster. You won't like to drive it as you would have no a/c, could carry no passengers, it would be cold without the side windows, noisy without the carpet and sound-deadening, quiet without the radio (you peoabaly wouldn't hear it anyway without the glass).......

Short story, remove the weight and you'll be quite a bit quicker! Answer Mr. Zero's question; what is your goal?

Yeah, the 2008 335i is just over 3600 lbs so he has a disadvantage on weight. Tire size means quite a bit along with weight.
 
What puzzles me is, the OP says the 335i is running a tune and cai? Isnt the 335i already a 13 second car with its supercharge? How is it running a cai, and how the Hell can an LS STOCK run with an already stock low 13 second car thats now Tuned? Unless im confused about the 335i ... someone google it (I would but im not near a computer atm)

Looks like it should smoke the LS off the line but I don't like the 13.5 quarter. I think the LS might have the guts from the roll. 4.8 0-60 should see a mid 12 sec quarter at about 112 mph.
 
0-130 takes more than 21 seconds??? I think it has asthma.

The BMW has more power, more gears and less weight. That would either have to be a major tune on the LS, or the BMW would have to have some problems, or both for the LS to beat the BMW in a race. Other possibilities are the BMW driver was unable to drive his car or he was sandbagging the Lincoln.

Last possibility, it was really a 328I which has a 0-60-mph sprint of 6.4 seconds, quarter-mile time of 14.6 seconds at 94.7 mph. A tuned LS could most likely take this one, and it doesn't take much to peel a 328 sign off and put a 335 sign on.

If that was for sure a good working 335i with a good tune it should run 1/4 under 12.5seconds easily.

Well tuned 335i is faster than the V8 M3.

As of LS beating the 335i, good luck OP.
 
Exactly why I went from a 2003 LS V8 Sport to a 2005 Jaguar S Type R. Stock about 13.1-13.3 sec 1/4 mile. 0-60 about 5.1-5.3 sec. Many cars are faster but for the price .Vs. performance they are a great value!! And like the LS these cars are going for next to nothing. A good upgrade in the braking, handling and ride categories too!

They have even less aftermarket than the LS but the factory out fitted them pretty well. And they have been run enough that the Jaguar forum has the fix for all the known problems that pop up over time.

Maybe because I think differently than you, but I have a problem with that. Few thoughts....

First: Jaguar and BMW will be infinitely more expensive to repair than the FoMoCo Lincoln LS. The LS exhibits Jaguar parts, but its manufactured by Ford, still cheaper than BMW and Jaguar only vehicles.

Second: The 335i is Supercharged. The LS would BLOW that Jags and Beamers doors off if it was Turbo'd. So I don't give too much credit that BMW that managed a 13.5 WITH FORCED INDUCTION.

Third: It would cost the OP considerably less to just Build a turbo on the LS, rather than trading it in for the pennies he will receive and invest LARGE amounts of cash into a Freaken Luxury European car. I estimate 10 grand for a complete Turbo build on the LS VS 40 + Grand just to buy the Euro vehicle.

Fourth: Most people on here love the DEW 98 platform of the LS and drive it as its meant to be, a classy Good riding Lincoln.
If the OP doesn't give a damn about the great ride, He should just trade in and invest 30K, Get a mustang GT 5.0, and TEAR A NEW WHOLE in the Beamer, and the Jag. Hell why stop there? Go race M3's, beat the snot out of most Audi's, and Laugh at every Lexus/infiniti/Acura that Rolls up...


Thing is, the mustang doesn't ride horribly per say, its just that it doesn't Corner like the European vehicles.

Lets do a poll:

How many here have taken their LS's to a track and raced CORNERS with their LS? Anyone?

So most people don't even use the advanced suspension in these cars ANYWAYS. Since people only care about going fast in a straight line, that cars perfect for him.

Also:
The Mustang can come equipped with:
Motorized seats, Leather seats, Heated seats, Nav screen, Upgraded THX sound system and many many other luxury features.

As far as i know, the 335i(at least the one in question) was twin TURBO charged. Not supercharged. And im sure it comes very "passively" tuned from the factory. As previously mentioned a well tuned 335i can take a stock e92 M3, a car that can easily cost twice as much, in a drag race any day. So I think you should give BMW a little more credit for the 335i.

I think he was saying that a turbocharged LS would take out the BMW, which it should. Turbocharge the LS and it should kill the 335i as then you'd be pitting two forced induction engines against each other. The forced 335i is only making a few more horses than the NA, so it would be weight and gearing differences vs a larger engine and more power.

A well tuned turbo should add 40 to 60 percent more power to the NA version depending on what other parts you swap and the tuning. That would result in the LS making 392 to 448HP and 403 to 460TQ. Split the difference and go 420HP and 432TQ, and you're looking at the LS as going from 13.95lb/HP and 13.56lb.TQ to 9.3lb/HP and 9.04lb/TQ. The BMW as is would be at 12.05lb/HP and 12.05lb/TQ. Even assuming you can net a 50HP/TQ increase in the BMW by tuning that's still only a 10.33lb/HP and 10.33lb/TQ and 50HP increase on a 300HP engine is a huge tuning gain.

If the tuning on the BMW can get a 50HP gain, the extra gears in the trans might be able to make up enough difference to take out a turbocharged LS. I doubt a tuner could get that much more out of it though. They'd have to turn up the BMW's turbo at that point.
