Monroe Coil Conversion Kit

How much does it cost? I heard of it a couple of years ago but the price was high.

Interesting... I wonder if it's truly a Monroe kit, or just something that's made by someone else and sold as Monroe. (shocks being the exception) Never heard of this conversion before.

Edit: Ok, also fits Mark VIIIs... And it's $470.

I purchased the Monroe kit from Rock Auto earlier this year when I converted my Blue 93 to coils. It's a nice kit. All Monroe parts; Sensitrac shocks all around. Heavy springs. Good quality and excellent instructions.

I only had one issue installing the kit. I had a hell of a time getting the rear springs installed into the perches in the rear suspension. You have to compress the rear springs in order to get them to fit into the air bag housings.

I finally ended up buying a cheap set of spring compressors from Harbor Freight and cutting the bolts down to 8 inches with a hack saw. With a shorter bolt, I was able to compress the rear springs and have enough clearance to maneuver the springs into each perch.

The car rides fine with the Monroe kit. We've had no issues since I installed it.

It's a standard height kit, so if you want a lowered stance, talk to Eddie at American Air. I have his lowered kit on my 97.

And for comparisons sake, here's my 97 with the lowered kit from American Air Suspension

there no need to compress the springs for the rear:

place jack under rear lower arm, unbolt sway bar link, unbolt shock, lower the jack, the whole thing drops down allowing you to place spring in place.............

the front springs are too soft, the sensacraps were done maybe six months in when i converted, got so bad it would sway in bumps on the highway.......the Koni's almost get rid of all bounce up front , but you can still tell its softer than the back, the back is normal.

and when i say "bounce" with the Koni's i mean when i press down on the car, the front maybe goes down 1/2", and the back not even 1/4" up/down movement, i got them turned all the way up.

with the sensacraps in the front i could almost get the car to hop just by pushing down on it...........

A mechanic friend of mine suggested the same method you posted. Use a jack and unbolt everything.

I thought long and hard about it, but in the end, I didn't have the stones to try it.

Yup. Not nearly as good looking as when I bought it.

The gravel driveway and the crushed stone roads around here have not been kind. I try to keep it looking decent, but its never gonna look as good as it did right after you wet-sanded it.

Since I bought it, I've converted it to coils, replaced the grille and did a J-Mod.

Check out the calendar thread on LOD. I submitted it, one of my 97 and a shot of all three, like I promised you last year.

where did you get the konis? and how did you get them into the front strut?

I love how they show the retail prices of these parts at like 900 so you THINK you're getting a good deal. If anyone paid that much I'd shoot em.

as for "0" having the koni's, read his signature

'98 Mark VIII LSC - Midnight Grey Metallic / Light Graphite, w/ Octastars
*Sniper Tuned / Lowered on Coils w/ KONI shocks / No Mufflers / 1 1/4 Rear Sway Bar / Potenza RE750 - front, Toyo T1R's in the back (245/55) *

where did you get the konis? and how did you get them into the front strut?

Easy, coil converted front struts are just MN12 struts.

I have a set of Tokicos for a Thunderbird. Absolutely love them. Combined with SuperCoupe springs, the car really handles quite nicely.

Koni's for the front are inserts, u get a stock used T-Bird shock, cut the top off, put the Koni insert in, and just put everything back together....... :)
