Found this little beauty hiding behind the right front rotor of my 93, had to grab the brakes because the ones on my 98 are ruined. Since these are basically still new I'm salvaging.
Anyway, she gave me a quick startle, even tho the thought of her being there crossed mind as i was removing the wheel, as Bill was telling me he had seen a vicious looking spider that he nor anyone else could recognize that he had described it to near that wheel
This is a very pregnant Black Widow

Fire! In this case a propane torche did the trick

Please keep in mind, for those of you with cars stored for a while that these spiders are attracted to old rubber and iron..it is very common to find them in old tires and wheel wells, under garden hose hangers and ect.. Keep an eye are where you're going to place your hands :)

Seems like I have seen these pics somewhere before.

And as I said, that wasnt the spider. The one I saw that couldnt be identified was brown front, red abdomen and fuzzy. It also couldnt be killed by stepping on it unless it was on cement.

Don't know the "real" name for those, but around here we call them "cow killers".

After I got bit by one at around age 10 on my grandparents farm, I know why they call them that... hurts so bad, it'll make you wish you were dead.

The abdomen is actually more of an orange-ish red, and they are dam hard to smush unless on hard ground... suckers must be made of natures-own Kevlar. But to this day, I still grind every one I see into powder.
 
It's hard to tell if the little bastards (yes I know they're female) are pregnant or just ...fat.

These are some resilient spiders btw. A good hit of chlorinated brake cleaner kills most bugs in a couple seconds - not black widows. They just calmly walk to a dry area and wait for it to evaporate. But fire works on everything.
 
If you live out in the woods im sure some buckshot will taken care of it.
 
black widows in florida are as common as squirrels, i have them in my garage all the time. i keep a lighter and a can of duplicolor clearcoat aerosol on my work bench i am constantly playing with my home made flame thrower killing them. we have them brown racluse spiders too those bite and the venom eats your flesh in hours, both very nasty spiders and dont let either live! but just so you know, the average adult person will not die from a black widow bite, you just get very sick, you can die, but it is not common to die from a black widow bite.
 
The spider in the pic is deffinatly a Black Widow, could see the red hour glass on her belly very clear, however Bill didn't get a shot from that angle. She was preg, I actually used to have a couple of them in a terarium when I was younger. The sack isn't normally that large...plug the amount of other spider remains on the ground are a good sign that she's been feeding heavily, and guarding her lair

Been there, done that. Most miserable 3 days of my life.

Widows usually aren't aggressive, the one that bit me did so cos it crawled up my pant leg, and I didn't know what it was and tried to mash it.
When I was maintaining a trailer park in central Oregon, I'd often crawl under the trailers to work on the plumbing or something and see HUGE black shiny ones. I'd just shoo em away with my bare hand, and they'd skedaddle. :cool:
 
We don't get the poisonous spiders up here.

I do see a lot of these wolf spiders, it hurts when they bite, but they really don't hurt you.

we have wolf spiders too they only seem to come around at night here, they are huge and they love to try to make a run for the inside of my garage. i burn those too i just hate anything in the spider family.
 
Since I hate pest insects I love having spiders around.
