A buddy of mine has a mustang with the roof you can unlatch and remove. I am not terribley sure what you call this but it would be an excellent project since I have the ugly rag tap.

I know it will leak and the frame will be weakened up... But has anyone ever attempted or thought about this? Wanna do it on my own to work up my welding skills...

hese were quite rare, 499 Cobras offered with a removable hard top from Ford:

In MM&FF or 5.0 Mag a woman wrote in saying she had a GT with the removable hard top also, but theres no record of Ford building them.

There was very little info on the builds, the GT's were 1995 models, and the production was halted after numerious problems of leakage.

Funny that pre-production was halted at the beginning too, so it was short lived, and a super rare option making these Mustangs/Cobra's worth quite a bit more than any other thier counter parts.

On a side note the GT's removable top looked a little different:

That looks like something ABC sells for the sn-95, it looks like the roof line for a sn-197.
The removable hard top GT ive seen pictures of look just like the Cobra and even had the storage unit like the Cobra also

damn all my years working at ford and i have never heard/seen a hard top vert mustang. my biggest problem with a vert is it looks like crap with the top up. ford needs to rethink the folding hard top idea again

I remember seeing a Cobra in the showroom brand new. Was a nice lookin car but I was there to drive a new T-Brid SC.

I have seen the targa conversion on the Mustangs and I do like it. Dont know how well it would work on the Mark..... give it a try! :D

I read in 5.0 mag a while ago that an aftermarket company makes hard tops for converts too. So some of those pics could be aftermarket as well

Our problem would be our quarter windows and the dome lights won't work anymore

Why wouldn't the quarter windows work? They're fixed. And one way to keep the dome light functional is to build electrical contacts into the roof where the top mounts and wire them to the dome lights. That way they would still work. Anything's possible.

I've often thought about a entire glass top. It would get hot, but you could put some kind of sliding screen. There are a couple cars out there that have something similar.

Wonder if you could fit a whole glass top in the roof from another car. Not that you would find one intact at the salvage yard.

Targa top might look good imo

Its actually kind of funny. Was just looking for a notch 2 days ago and found that, then find a post and it comes up again. Kinda like chat last night. Maybe I should play the lotto tomorrow

lol

and for whats it worth thats still a vert abe, just a removable hard top, chopping the top is something totally different
