whats up guys, ive been getting a low oil message and when i checked it out, there was only about 1 quart of oil in there! i dont have any leaks and i havent noticed an excessive ammount of smoke out of the exhaust. i am due for a change in a few thousand miles and ive always done it on time. i switched to synthetic oil 2 oil changes ago if that means anything. any idea what my problem is here?

how many miles, exsessive smoke, losing oil, i'd say its being burnt, time for a motor overhaul, or replace it.

well i dont know exactly how much oil was left in there but there was not nearly enough in there. i do not get any smoke on start up or at WOT, any other possibilities?

Can you get a pic of the underside of your car? From the oil filter, pan and trans....

It's going somewhere if you don't see any leaks where you park. Could be blowing out as you drive but if 5 quarts was under there, seems like you would be smelling it or have some sort of leak showing after you are parked. If it's clean on the bottom side of the engine and trans, you're burning it but not seeing it.

uh. EVERY car thats powered by gasoline has a PCV valve..check your coolant, also, how many miles are you putting on the motor between topped off oil and check oil light?

and earlier than 1950 doesnt count..before that they simply dumped it on the ground, which was bad for emissions, if you care about that kinda thing
and Volvo is called a "Flame Trap" which is STILL a Possitive Crankcase Ventilation..PCV!

You answered your own question. Well done. And there is a difference between PCV and a PCV valve. One is system, the other a device for it.

Anyway, our PCV valve is located on the driver side valve cover, it's the thing that's just shoved in the top with a hose attched to it

no smoke, no leaks, check your coolant - maybe the oil is mixing into that?

My brothers 2000(? I think it was) 2.2L Cavalier didnt have a PCV valve... I don't think some S-10s had them either.

ok well i just checked my coolant and its nice and green. i guess im burning oil, i did notice i started getting the massage after an 8 hour drive so i guess its the long trips that are hurting me. what could cause the oil to burn up like that? with no major red flags especially?

Valve guide seals or rings or both. Sapperfires eats it pretty bad too and only has one very small leak. His dont smoke at start up or while normal running but when he goes WOT then its a huge cloud of blue smoke. My car lets out some smoke too at WOT but not to the same level.

Prolly just ready for a rebuild. How many miles?
