Kooks header failure

Little did I know THIS was the pinhole exhaust leak that I started hearing recently. It aint no pinhole anymore and the car is now being punished and neglected again. I don't have the time or money for dropping the engine out to have this header repaired when I am in the middle of pursuing another Mark8. I guess it will fvcking sit. Unbelievable. 2.5 year old 304 Stainless Kooks headers and this already. :mad: And I thought that I finally had all of the problems fixed on this car. Someone release the curse....

So much for SS being the king. You need the air port? Weld patch on if not needed, in car. That same failure happened on a set of kooks on a camaro I just welded on patch.

No, the air injection has been deleted. The primary pictured is the very front cylinder on the passenger side closest to the CAI. It looks to me like it is nearly impossible to squeeze a welder in there to put on a patch, but then again I am not a welder so I wouldn't know. Thoughts??
 
Put a magnet on the stub that came out. I'll bet it's not 304 stainless. Kooks has been known to use mild steel fittings on their 304 SS headers.
 
Not to be a vulture, but if you do decide to get rid of them I would be interested since my setup is not going to be running the EGR. No big deal just throwing it out there.

If you can't get it welded, and it would be a real pain to get in the lower half, cut a piece of sheet metal and take two worm gear hose clamps and temp patch it until you can pull the header.

Well that is a piece of chit move. I'll take the chunk with me to work tomorrow and find out. I'll bet the farm that Bill over at SCP won't do jack chit for me either. 2.5 years later I should not be blowing a fvcking hole out of the side of an $800 set of headers.

Bah, I've had worse things happen since owning this cursed vehicle. The only thing that sucks about this situation is the timing. I am buying Thomas' supercharged 97 and that is top priority. So if this is not an easy fix without dropping the motor, I am forced to let the car sit in the state of disarray it is in now. I will be getting in my rusty blue F-150 tomorrow. I'm sexy and I know it. :rolleyes:

I discovered that the EGR fitting on my headers was mild steel. However, the 2 AIR fittings on mine are 304 SS.

I verified that the stub is stainless but the weld bead around the base where it blew off is slightly magnetic. Now again, not a welding pro, but wouldn't you want to weld stainless with stainless wire feed:confused:

304 SS should be welded with 308 filler, which also is not magnetic.
 
So would, this be a workmanship defect? I dont know,the warranty on them but id be checking.
 
Damn! So can anyone pinpoint where exactly the rust originated from? Planning on getting "stainless" headers for my next performance vehicle but this has me worried.
