My uncle, who has painted many cars and his son laughed at me over the holidays when I told him I'm re-painting my car black. Then tommy berated and warned me again and again on re-painting my car black. And this was after I had heard time and again not to paint a car black the first time around. So; in lue of this I took myself out to a car dealership and took a look at nice black cars and I gotta say. Yea... everyone's right. The prep work has to be absolutely perfect to make it look good, but on the flipside.. when it's done right a black car looks fantastic.

So, in lue of all this I've been looking at other colors and would like suggestions from you guys.

I'd like to stay away from silver, white, red, blue, and stay very close to grey greyish-black.

My favorite so far is Deep Slate Pearl. What do you guys think?
 
My choice in a heartbeat would be Midnight Grey Metallic.

sorry bro, I didn't want you to get all knee deep into this, and having it look bad afterwards.

black is 10 times harder than many other colors.
Silver is very hard for a budding painter as well.

Like I said, you should get alot more black than you are going to need, and practice, practice, practice with painting the hood, in both vertical and horizontal painting.
Painting horizontal surfaces isn't the same as painting vertical surfaces.

if I were you, I'd paint the hood no less than 4 times.. 2 times horizontal and 2 times vertical.
 
Just pay to have it done professionally. Save the headache. There's a lot of reasonably priced places to paint your Mark here in Houston.
 
A dark, dark color is almost as hard as Black to get the prep perfect. Only real light colors can hide the bad prep. Plain white is the usual choice. I did this when I was 17-18, spent a few months on body work and prep. Alot of work to get it looking good.

You can do it. if you want to paint it black then go for it. I painted one of my old trucks black when I was 19. It was the first thing I painted. It turned out good, not a show truck by any means but looked damn good. If the body work is straight and you're not getting a lot of metal flake I don't see the issue. Go for it.
 
I agree with the two above statements. It takes time and a lot of wet sanding but in the end, it will look good. I remember you saying that you weren't looking for a perfect job, you just wanted it to be better than it was.

You can do this but take your time with it and don't rush.

We'll see after the practice work is done on the bed with black paint. I am loving that gret metallic up there though. the philosophy to paint it other than black goes deeper than the heeding of others. A mark painted a color other than stock (and done well ) might raise the value. ( I'm thinking. ) Maybe... maybe not. But I love that grey. I've looked at several colors over the last month. Gun-metal grey was another favorite.

the idea is we will sand, primer and paint a hood and bed with dark paint. ( I might go with the grey metallic above. ) to see what the paint will look like on the mark. We will make the hood look exactly like the car and DA it exactly like the car etc.
 
I too love that color on his car. If he would sell it now, I would buy it now and actually own a Gen 2 and like it. :)

Some Speedsters in chrome or silver would for sure set that car off with a slight sensor lowering. The color, I love it!
 
The problem with changing colors is you will have to paint the jams, the trunk area etc.


Black is hard it will show everything.
You can do it, just be ready to redo it.
I doubt you will get it how you want it the first time.
Have your uncle who laughed at you came over and help!

Inside of doors are already sanded. Was painting them anyway. To do correctly ( IE: to get inside where the hinge is I might need to take the damn doors off. Trunk and hook = easy peasy nice and easy. :p
 
Black is not as hard as you guys are making it out to be. It involves that same amount of work as every other color to make look good. If you are trying to hid not so good body work with a paint color you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

I agree, a solid color is easier to spray than a metallic. The black would be easier than the midnight opal. As far as spray ability black is one of the easiest. It covers good and is very easy to match and get uniform. BUT yes it will show every flaw that you missed while prepping. In any paint job the prep work is far more important than the spraying.

+1 to all that. All of it!!

The midnight gray metallic is nice looking but the black would be easier. Even that gray is dark enough to show quite a bit but black does show all the flaws.
