I was talking to Lincoln and they told me before I bring the car in to them to make sure there isn't a leaking vacuum line behind the engine. He seems to think there is a line that runs behind the intake manifold. Is this true?

Where is it because I can't see one.

When I spray towards the back with carb cleaner that is when I get the major stumble. I can't see exactly what it's hitting though because how far back it is. I'm wondering now if there is a vacuum line back there getting the carb cleaner on it. hmmmm......

Yeah there is a little silver box bolted to the back of the drivers head that has two vac lines feeding it. I think (mine are gone so cant check) that they come from the two solinoids that are on top of the drivers side head and another one off the little one under the drivers shock tower cover.

Dude, right off the TB on the drivers side is a T that has a vacumm line on it, common for that to crumble and if your spraying behind there it could allow for your issues... I think one line feeds the PCV and the other is a vacumm line for the Fuel system.. dont quote me on it but if its not there that will be loud enough to hear. Wish I had a pic but I know its there.

You're not referring to the IMRC box are you?

I put new lines and a new T line in place off the intake manifold as well as a new pcv. Must be different on a Gen 2 because we have two lines coming off the intake manifold that go into a T. That feeds to one line which heads to the ds valve cover where the pcv is. I've replaced all of that stuff already. All brand new.

Is there any lines that go behind the engine is what I'm wondering? I'm wondering if carb cleaner is getting sucked in there. See the issue is I can't tell if its sucking in at the manifold, a random vac line behind there, or if its sucking in at the imrc plates because supposedly some o-ring wears away on them so i'm curious if that could be it too.

I just want to make sure I've pinpointed the problem exactly before I have it fixed. It stumbles real hard when I spray the carb cleaner back there.

No, its above the IMRC box. Has one electrical connector and two vac lines. It controlls the EGR. Also check the EGR gasket.

There is another line that goes to the fuel system too?

Thre is a Vacuum line running off the bottom plate of the Throttle body... look for that one.. Its where my PCV is connected.. the intake vacuum port if the Power brake booster. and possibly the IMRC vacuum.. Mine is tapped in another locaiton but Ive seen otheres there.
Good luck.

RC, go to autozone, look around the front counter area for a mirror-wand , they cost like $2 ...it'll help ya see everything in tight areas alot better...use in conjunction with a flashlight... Stick mirror in behind there...aim light at mirror..look around

96: The Gen II's are completely different than the Gen I's. They are not set up like ours are.

I've already got two both Craftsman professional attached to a extendable magnetic end. I actually have quite a bit of really good tools. Now I just need the knowledge on how to use those tools ;) :D

Pop hood, place tool in hand..put mirror near object you're wanting to see..stare at mirror while twisting mirror for different angles

I want to make sure I find what's wrong with it explicitly because I literally have enough money for one more repair, then I'm dead broke till January....meaning I will have less than $100 to my name to pay for gas to get to school till January after this fix. So I want to make sure I make this fix count.

With all the research I've done it seems that many have fixed the intake gasket and still had the same issue I had. They then found it was the o-ring or whatever on the IMRC plate. If that was the case I would be up the creek with broken paddles....

No dummy I know how to use that, I was being sarcastic about my barrage of nice tools that would be good if I knew how to fix cars properly ;) :D

You said you need knowledge on how to use your tools, I gave info, and you call me a dummy...ironic

and you call me a dummy...ironic

And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

I have the same question...but about a GEN1. The last time I seafoamed my '96, I saw smoke coming from behind the engine between the intake and the firewall. It doesn't do it during normal operation. Only when I seafoam it. I have looked all over the back of the engine and can't see where it would be coming from. During the seafoam process, the smoke comes up from under the firewall on the passenger side. It almost looks like it's coming from the transmission. But it has to be coming from the intake or exhaust system somewhere because it's seafoam smoke. And the car has a stumble when idling and hickups while cruising. It has to be a vacuum leak. But I can't find it to save my life. And it doesn't have any exhaust leaks that I know of. Is there some kind of vacuum hose between the engine and firewall somewhere close to the tranny?

I donno bout a gen 2 but on a gen one there is a small rectangular box on the backside of the ds head with 2 hoses going to it, that is your DPFE. Not sure if gen 2 location is the same bit i have seen those hoses leak and cause lean codes and a lack of power.

Jamie my issue is that my funds are tight. The more reading I do, the more I realize I need to go with OEM gaskets...well they aren't cheap, rather than cost me $50 for everything, they will cost me $100 for everything. So that cuts into the money I would have to pay to have it fixed.

Secondly I really don't like dropping my car off and playing the "when will it be done game". Any time I'm there with the car, the car is fixed and everyone is happy. I don't like not seeing what is done to my car because then I can't see with my own eyes what was done so I know how to trouble shoot further. Plus when it is apart it gives me a chance to look at other things on the engine.

It's cool Ensanker offered to give me a ride, the problem is I have my son until 6pm when my wife gets home. Sure I could switch the carseat over to his car for the ride home, but the car seat cuts pretty hard into the leather. I wouldn't want to do that to someone elses car, especially if they are trying to help me out.

What I don't think you understand is I have no income. My income is the left over money that is given to me from my financial aid. That's it. Once it's gone, it's gone. My wife used to have a cushion to work with, but since we now have to pay for a babysitter twice a week for 12 hours total while I'm in school that eliminates that pocket. We now are living paycheck to paycheck. So you bet I'm trying to be absolutely certain of what the problem is. Look at all of the work you've done to my car and it still drives like it does. With all of this money I think any sane person would start to be very cautious of any money they throw at it at this point.

Honestly Jamie I feel more comfortable being there with my car. I want to help work on the car, if that isn't an option, then maybe I need to find someone that is willing to work with me to fix it, or I'll just have to take a shot at it myself.

What I may need you to eventually look at is the ps suspension is making a loud clunking noise. I'm going to jack it up and see what's going on under there. That is frustrating because I just had you fix that so I have no clue why that is now giving me problems again.
