In-dash DVD

These head units, they're double DIN? Just curious cause I'm lookin' on Crutchfield now and any double DIN says it doesn't fit..?

Was looking at the Kenwood DDX512 actually..

that is because they do not have the parts (dash kit) to make it fit with out doing custom work. any body that has a DD mobile video had to modify either a single din kit or the factory nav trim piece.

I know that much about having to modify the Navigator bezel a bit. I'm asking if what people here have are double DIN or another size.

BTW the 512 is pretty sweet, DVD's look real crisp and clear and i like the Ipod interface a little better than the D3. plus if you decide to get the nav add on it works very well and is made by garmin and uses flash memory instead of DVD so you can listen to a CD and use nav at the same time. does any body know if the kenwoods can watch videos off their Ipod with the same connection like the D3 can or do you have to use a different input like a aux video?

a lot of people are using Double Din mobile video units in their LS's, you just have to get the dash trim out of a LS that has factory nav

Cool, thanks. I don't really want it for the Nav, since I have a TomTom already. I guess I could always do like you said and add it on if I felt I really needed it.

The Audiophile in-dash 6 CD stock head unit has what, 6 or 12 speakers? I count 2 on the center console, 4 door speakers and the two rear subs.....?

I'm guessing that since the door speakers are 2 way, there are technically 2 speakers in each door. 4x2=8 +2 console + 2 "subs" gives the 12 that they claim.

Oh and 1LoudLS, You need the ipod interface cable for the kenwood units I believe. I bought that, and wired it into the glovebox. Now I just need to buy an ipod...

EDIT: ON second thought, most newer units have a USB port on the back, so all you need is your regular ipod cable.

I was thinking that too, but wasn't sure. Can you supply pics as proof? Just kidding :D;)

I think I may go for that Kenwood.

I don't mind paying retail for bigger ticket items, like if i'm going to drop a grand on a stereo. I buy the unit, PLUS the service. I'm sure you can find closeout online places for dirt cheap. But if something comes broken, or breaks shortly thereafter, I want to make sure that I'm taken care of.

i guess it's nice to have someplace to go to if things go wrong. Plus free install on most stuff is a plus if you trust the shop like I do mine. Just wondering if you guys had like a fairy-audio-mother type of hook up cause stuff ain't cheap.

time to search for pics!

If you solely are concerned with lowest price, check out www.sonicelectronix.com They have very low prices. I don't know if the stuff is new or refurbished, or if you even get a warranty.

thanks pektel, I've used the new usb interface on the 512 and it seems to be faster than the older module with a dock connector expecialy with the flash Ipods. i had just not tried to watch videos from an Ipod yet and was wondering if it was a go.

on a side note if any body is looking for a good cheap set up, Best Buy has the D3 for $599 and it now includes the bluetooth adapter and the Ipod adapter is another $31

Excuse me if I sound dumb cause I know nothing about this but would a external slim HDD work like a Ipod in the USB?

looks like the same unit, but with some more features. I'd say go for it. You can get a bigger screen than that though. the 712 has a 7" screen.

with most units a usb hard drive will work, but sometimes the interface sucks because of the file structure. some will use the Tag info from the MP3 (works real well very organized) some units will use the file name or the folder structure (only works well if your music is well organized and has good file names)

GRRRRRRRRRRRR..... I am farkin pissed. I finally got my $650 in circuit city gift cards and the AVIC-D3 is no longer available. if the damn people didnt take so long to ship my gift cards i would have got it before they sold out. i called circuitcity.com and they said they werent getting any more... now im screwed! thats the only double din unit with gps built in for a reasonable price. i may have to get the jensen with optional nav but then ill have to pay a monthly fee for xm and i dont like the flip ups as much. ill give it a week and see if they get any more D3s before I buy anything.
-PISSED!
