recently came across 98 cobra intake. for those who dont know ive got comp cams, 80mm mass air / cold air k/n, kooks headers. ive heard itsloss down low is minimal 3-5 hp while up top 25hp., mr stromberg, dlf great article on lod,let me get my checklist ready
1. drill/tap vaccuum line in lower manifold for booster
2. will the stock throttle cable work
3. do i need to flip over throttle body if throttle cable works, if i need new one do i still need to flip it?
4.egr, i plan on deleting all of it, otherwise i need to fab special line where can i get delete items including ones on headers, and when i remove smog pump what size belt do i need.
5. (DLF)on the rear of the cobra manifold is a vacuum fitting on your lod thread on page 1 but it appears to face away from brake booster, there is another on the side facing at 45 deg angle can i use that?
6. the iac valve on the front will i need to get for the 98 cobra or will the one from the mark fit?
7. the plastic air tube looks like you used the mark tube, yes? i know its in a different spot and angle i can modifrt that, but if im reusing stock throttlebody it should work.
and anything else i may need. trying to keep cost down, what gasket set will i need?thanks,THEGR81
 
I'll answer the questions I KNOW the answers to.

3. If you use the stock throttle body, you'll need to flip it. Aftermarket, or Cobra throttle body will work as is.

4. The EGR delete plate on the intake can be found all over the Internet. The header fittings are gonna be mug harder to find. I think most people cut the end off of the EGR tube and crimp the tube and weld it closed.

-the smog pump is electrically powered, you'll use the same belt...

6. Pretty sure you use the one from the Mark.

7. 03 Cobra tube.
 
I bought all of my gaskets from RockAuto.

IMRC gaskets for Mark VIII, and cobra plenum gaskets.

IMRC gasket shouldn't matter which one, throttle body gasket for Cobra.

Get some new orings for the crossover tube too.

2. I suppose, if you're using the stock throttle body, but you'll have to fabricate a bracket.
3. See #2 for the Gen 2 Mark VIII throttle body. Obviously, if you use a Cobra throttle body (and cables) it doesn't get flipped over.
4. You'll need a block-off plate for the intake manifold, some sort of cap for the headers, and turn off the EGR in the tune. As previously posted, the AIR pump is not belt driven.
5. The stock vacuum fittings on the Cobra intake are used for other connections.
6. Get a Cobra IAC valve.
7. I used an '03/'04 Cobra intake tube and the lower part of the stock tube.

I used stock Ford Cobra gaskets.

Read my thread on LOD again so you don't miss little things like the two shorter bolts that you'll need.

And with your setup, I'd get IMRC deletes. However, the FRPP composite pieces are out of production and hard to find. I wouldn't use aluminum plates, as they'll transfer heat.

when i noticed the power gain you posted of 25 up high, did you have a baseline with them in, i mean what is the real advantage to deleting them?
and one more thing, on the intake tube there is a line that goes across the front and looks like it goes into or under the iac somewhere through a little black box, what is that? its on pg 6 of your thread.

You don't gain 25 hp from just the IMRC delets. They are a tiny restriction in the port when open. The hose you speak of is the IAC hose.
 
Keep in mind, DLF did the deletes at the same time as he swapped the intake. He also tuned the car for the intake and the deletes. If 25hp was mentioned, it is probably from the intake swap, imrc deletes, and tune all together.

I gained 35 RWHP over 6K RPM's with the combination of JBA short headers, FRPP IMRC deletes, and a ported short runner Cobra intake, over the stock Cobra intake, IMRC's, and exhaust manifolds.

The deletes and headers were worth ~18 RWHP, and the short runner intake another ~18 RWHP.

I have no data on the deletes by themselves.

I made no HP claims about my LSC in that thread, other than posting a dyno sheet after the swap.

And as for why I'd recommend IMRC deletes.....

If you have a high stall TC and gears, and are more concerned with performance than cruising, then it's almost a no-brainer. As soon as you stomp on the loud pedal, you're going to be over 3K RPM's anyway, which is the point that the stock IMRC's open.

And, they'll never break. ;)

But you can't just slap them on, they'll take a bit of tuning by someone who knows what they're doing.

Definitely delete the IMRC's. If nothing else it's one less thing to worry about with these motors.
